I think everyone is forgetting about the fact that there was a stasis that kept Chell asleep for an extremely long amount of time at the beginning of Portal 2. >.> Remember the excessive amount of zeroes the automated recording said at the beginning? It also appeared that there may have been another stasis period right before Portal 1 started, by the looks of the pod in the room you start in.

After Cave died of moondust poisoning, the scientists at Aperture Labs forced Caroline to become the mind of an AI computer. That AI went mad for two reasons (1) she was forced into the computer against her will, and (2) the computer was programmed to orgasm every time a test subject completed a test chamber. The clues are subtle, but it's all in the game...

It's not exactly an "orgasm" that they get, more of a feel-good type of thing, like what a human would feel after taking a dose of most any drug (cigarettes, meth, etc.) which is why it would be "addicting", like what happened to Wheatley. GLaDOS, however, says she was in it for the science, not the good feeling, which is why she was able to stay "sane" (since she had no 'addiction'), more or less, unlike Wheatley.
