i need help, in need an all-round lens on a budget of about £400 or $600 and i want to buy a lens thats good for taking stills but would be good for filming sports like mountain biking and such. What lens should i go for ?
@hougiiou With that budget you could get a 70-200 F/4L (NOT the 2.8).It's a large lens and is not wide but it might work for you. If you need a wider lens the 18-135 is good. Not nearly as good as the 70-200 but would let you get a wider shot. These are the lenses I would look at. There are many more however. All the best.
@nate42nd wow thanks this has really helped, iv found it just in my price range on one site and well it look like it could do alot better the the 18-135mm
I'll buy a t2i by the beginning of march, im still in doubt about the lens of the starter kit. My doubt lies between 18-55mm IS or 18-135mm IS. In another video you recommended the 135 for beginners and so far i believe it will be my choice, but my concern is if ill be able to take family pictures with it (that wont be my main purpose, but eventually, i'd like to have a good quality pic of my family). In this case, would the 18-55 be more versatile than the 18-135? Great tutorials by the way!
24 - 70 2.8 is going to run you 1800 bucks average. Again you are talking specialty lens. I thought you were answering the question " best walk around lens " and you mentioned a few more then one! Seems impossible to answer that question in one word. But I'll do it here for ya! The very best walk around lens is " 18mm - 105mm 3.5 - 5.G D VR " if your a Nikon shooter. Price average 400 bucks and it will be well worth your investment. You'll find yourself using it more then anything in your bag !
You mentioned first of all the budget minded, the 17-55 2.8 is 1500 bucks plus and it's a specialty lens. Hence the price. Believe it or not one of the best lens you can carry is your standard kit 18-55 yep ! I'm telling you use it and you'll find out. The quality is very good and it will save you time and trouble in a pinch. VR is going to serve you well and if you carry a 50mm and 1 85 or 105 prime you're set for all except wildlife. Remember most watching this aren't pros! Thanks
I hope you have time to help me out a bit on what lens would suit me best? I usually shoot in studio, i would like to get up really close taking pictures of lips and get all the details without my lens acting up (like it does now, unable to focus) While being able to shoot from waist and up. sharp and crisp images (no blur) i have 3m of space infront of the model to move (if that helps) :)
@panadesu Most lenses can focus with 3M of space. I am not sure quite what you're asking but I have come to believe the 24-105 F/4L is the best "all around" lens for me. It can focus to .45M The 50mm 1.4 is also good if you don't need zoom. It sounds like a studio setting. The 24-70 F2.8L would also be a great choice. There are many more for less money if that's a problem.
My friends and i where talking about cropped cameras (i have an eos450d) and that it might not be a good idea for me to purchase a 85mm lens as it would "zoom in" (for a lack of a better word) giving me a hard time in my little studio . (im guessing thats what they meant) What im looking for is a lens suitable for macro (closeup of lips) and great for shooting models waist up. What do you think? Is the 85mm prime a good choice?
@panadesu Yes, the 85mm is a good choice. If you were going to get that one I would get the 100mm macro instead. That way you could use it for close ups AND portraits from the waist up. You would have to back up but it's a very sharp and well made lens.
24-70 2.8 lens would work well for most shots even on a cropped sensor. 24 acts like a 38mm on a crop sensor, so it will be wide enough to shoot indoors without a problem. Also, if you ever plan on moving to full-frame that lens will still work where as the 17-55mm 2.8 will only work on cropped sensors.
Fyi most portrait shooters love the 80mm but keep in mind that this lens is typically favored by guys using full frame. On a crop body (1.6) a 50mm will give u the same focal length.
@Failingromeo Good point. Lenses give a different FOV on crops but I like the 85mm and 100mm for portraits as well as the 50mm. They can all work, it depends on your style and how close you want to get.
Thanks for your advice. I have replaced my Sigma 18-250mm f3.5-6.3 OS HSM zoom lens with a Canon 24-70mm 2.8L and a Canon 70-200 mm f2.8L IS USM II for my Canon 60D and the difference is amazing noticeable. In my opinion the 24-70mm is a very nice all around lens. What's your opinion about a 85mm f1.4 as a possible choice to all do lens?
@falopio2007 The 85mm is kind of a specialty lens. A good one. I would love a 85mm 1.8 Canon for portraits and still life. It's good for a lot but not an "all around" lens.
I'm with you nate my 24-105 rarely ever leaves my 7d. I think its because i have the red ring curse and nothing else is as good. Recently I got to try out the 15-85mm its actually a really decent lens - not cheap tho.
As far as crop sensor critics go just ignore them. People like to hate on the 7d and d7000 because crop sensor cameras are starting to close the gap on the full frame. At the end of the day its all about taking great pictures and doing what you love.
@Failingromeo I agree. The new 5D will be cool but for now I would rather have the 7D. What a camera! I could not be more happy. It's good for everything. The larger sensor would be nice for dynamic range and some other stuff but the 7D does a fine job! Better than fine. It rules.
@nate42nd Hey Nate I agree with you. I think it just really depends on what type of photography you do. The full frame sensor is excellent, I am not gonna lie, and really does blow away crop sensor cameras in low light and ISO performance but that's not to say that the 7D or the D7000 give bad results. I own two crop sensor cameras the 550D and the 50D and I love the crop sensor for the extra extension I get with my lenses. Its like you say it all depends on what your needs are.
Previously, I was using the 15-85 3.5-5.6 which I find a very good walk around lens for its range. I even had it left on my camera for a few weeks! Image quality is superb and the focal range is perfect--from ultra wide to medium telephoto (85mm is the arguably the best focal length for portrait). I loved it, except for its somewhat slow aperture.
I find myself walking around with the 70-200 2.8 more often now than the 24-70 2.8. I also have the 10-22, but I feel like getting at least one prime, say, the 50 1.4.
Did you hear about the new Samyang/Rokinon 35mm 1.4? It's getting great reviews and it's only $499.99. Though, it is a fully manual lens, but for that price it's a steal.
Rokinon also sells the 85mm 1.4 for under $300. It's another manual lens that is highly reviewed, especially by those that use it for video. The build quality is very high as well.
@oRedRaider I know what a crop sensor does....however put a 50mm lens on a 5D then put the same lens on a 7D and tell me there is not the appearance of magnification. I know it's not but it IS the most simple way to explain it. I don't misrepresent the facts and can't understand why you get so excited about this. I will not have this discussion again with you man. Sorry we can't just agree to disagree.
@nate42nd It's not magnification Nate, it is just cropping down the FIELD-OF-VIEW. When have you ever laid your hands on a 5D and compared a 50mm f/1.8 between it and your 7D?
It seems pretty simple to me to explain that a crop body condenses the field of view of a lens, as opposed to on a full frame body.
Next, you keep making these claims, repeatedly telling your viewers to not overlap their lens collections. Yet you own 24-105mm, 17-55mm and 18-200mm? So you don't follow your own advice? You have more overlap than a fatboy's chin...
@oRedRaider As I stated in the video. I made a POINT to say DON'T overlap focal lengths. You need some help dude. Go to the bar, have a few drinks and get into a fight or something. damn.
@nate42nd Why the hostility and CAPS, Nate? I don't drink and am appalled that you would suggest that someone go to a bar, get drunk and fight, then drive home. Because if they go to a bar, they drive to a bar, then have to drive back home. So I take it you are not an active supporter of MADD? Mothers Against Drunk Driving does not condone that type of behavior, you guys in Joesph Smithville must not have any MADD Chapters. To say the least, I am disappointed in how you truly are....
@oRedRaider The Nikon 24-70 is a GREAT lens. The new Canon 24-70 should be interesting when it comes out also. The 24-70 F/2.8 is one of the best lenses to have. Some would choose it if they could only have one lens. I would have to consider it. Even the older Canon one. Good point.
Hey Nate. Very well said. I used a 50mm 1.4 today at the finish line of a friends marathon with great results. I really wanted to use one of my old manual focus primes, but they just aren't fast enough in my hands for such an application. Have a great Memorial Day!
@kookiemoose Hey Moose! What a great lens that 50mm 1.4 must be. I wish I had that one instead of the 1.8 but I have had good luck with the 1.8 Hopefully people will think before they go out and get that "fix all" lens. Most of us need at least 2 lenses if not 3-4 to make us happy. You have a good Memorial day also!

@kshitijchavan Depends on if you like close ups or landscapes when you say "natural" I would say a 17-55 Canon or maybe a 50mm macro or 100mm macro.

Nate, a 'crop body' does not cause a 50mm lens on a canon to "act like a 80mm lens".
IT WILL NOT MAGICALLY MAGNIFY OR ACT LIKE A TELE-CONVERTER.
A 'crop body' only changes the FIELD OF VIEW, bro. That's it, period.
You are misinforming people, with your continuous misrepresentation of the facts...
