Awesome video, cool to listen to him talk and he seems like a very chill, down to earth kind of guy. I had a Fender 212 chorus-type amp and an OC-2, to think I got rid of them both...
so yamaha pacificas are simlar to fenders i see. are they better or what like ive only played yamaha painos and basses and i like them alot. but i never played a guitar from yamaha any suggestions?
@TheSonsofHorusx I have a lot of yamaha's if you can get you hands on the sg-2 or sg-3 model, buy it. My first yamaha was a yamaha 302-s, it's like the mike stern but with normal tele pickups and it can be found way cheaper
I like Mike's tone but I've never understood the chorus-y solid state sound that he and a few others utilized and popularized. Give me a Deluxe Reverb.
I *love* the fact that this guy uses old, "comfortable" gear. CarlosGTR has it exactly right: The sound comes from the hands, head, and heart; the gear is just a set of tools.
Mike Stern is just awesome--really original and incredibly skilled. I've had the chance to see him live many times over the last 20 years. His sense of timing and groove are impeccable. Plus, he's a super nice guy. Props.
@thailow117 009s aren't really 80s, jimmy page said that his trick was light strings.. even though i can'tr use 009s nwithout fear of breaking them haha!
A lead guitarist in my band a few years ago traded that Yamaha pacifica M.Stern model to me. It is a great guitar. We played classic rock and that guitar covered it all.
My main instrument is guitar but at the time I was the bassist. Oh, er, I mean they made me the bassist, because I had one. I still have the guitar and it sits on stage as the main backup.
I'm pretty sure that the person on the left is Satoshi Inoue. He's a jazz guitarist from Japan who teaches at the New School for Social Research in New York. He's quite a good guitarist, and helped Jim Hall with his Jazz Guitar Master Class videos.
He has a second DS1 way down the line in his signal chain. Usually guys keep the distortions up front. ANy comments why he would set that up that way?
Mike, I really hate to say this..... but in my school (note: not music collage, actual high school) we have that same old Yamaha amp and it's possibly the worst sounding amp I've ever heard!
I have the Yamaha MS 1511 (Mike Stern) and it's an unbelievable guitar... Neck's smoothness is uniqu. And it's look is like a 52 reissue Tele with a Strat pickguard. Has sweet cream bindings. The one thing I don't like is the control panel. So I've upgrade it from RSguitarworks (vintage grey tiger caps, push/pull tone pot, also 3 compensed brass saddles, and chrome Duncan 59' hum for warmer sound)
You can find it at secondhand guitar sites... Thats where I've bought it from...
@aintnaive I haven't tried it, but yamaya is making pretty good guitars. If its made in Japan, then buy it... Because usually Japans produce quality guitars then USA... But don't buy if its chinese, indonesian or korean stuff...
don't get me wrong. I like Jeff Beck and I find him a great great guitar player. their styles are diferent so comparison is dificult, but, Mike has played with miles davis, dennis chambers, brecker brothers and also is a great songwriter. I don't see Jeff coming anywhere near.
@eurabio: Jeff Beck has done some brilliant Fusion records, but he comes at it as a Rock player playing Fusion rather than as a Jazz player playing Fusion. A little trivia note: Jeff Beck does not use pedals.
Yeah, that was what made me to go to "what the heck" at the end of of the vid! :-o But I remember Frank Marino telling in an interview: "yeah, 008 strings, ya can play really fast with 'em if you're skilled enough". But you can buy individual strings... naah, 10 for my Ibanez, 11 for my Fender.
Love just the few notes he played, he's a tone monster.

mmh string measures... 11, 13,15,26,32,38?
Okay: the first 10 string is exchanged with an 11. But the rest are NOT from a standard 10 - 46 set! String 3, 5 & 6 are way to thin..
But I agree with the high string being to weak on most guitars: most guitars sound better with extra tight first string..
GuitarPolson 11 months ago
@GuitarPolson
What an unbalanced set of strings. I can see where he's coming from, though. I have an 11 on a set of 9-42 strings and it actually feels pretty good.

@murdoches not really, particularly not on jazz. wes or scofield play 0.14. That's heavy.
0.11. ist in fact labelled standard by most manufacturers.
