  • Love just the few notes he played, he's a tone monster.

  • Awesome video, cool to listen to him talk and he seems like a very chill, down to earth kind of guy. I had a Fender 212 chorus-type amp and an OC-2, to think I got rid of them both...

  • guy on the left looks like Manny Pacquiao from this far on the monitor. Mike Stern rules!

  • WHAT STRINGS ARE YOU WEARING .am robbin that line lol.

  • so yamaha pacificas are simlar to fenders i see. are they better or what like ive only played yamaha painos and basses and i like them alot. but i never played a guitar from yamaha any suggestions?

  • @TheSonsofHorusx I have a lot of yamaha's if you can get you hands on the sg-2 or sg-3 model, buy it. My first yamaha was a yamaha 302-s, it's like the mike stern but with normal tele pickups and it can be found way cheaper

  • equipments!

  • what string are you wearing?

  • I like Mike's tone but I've never understood the chorus-y solid state sound that he and a few others utilized and popularized. Give me a Deluxe Reverb.

  • haha I use the same string setup. A set of 10s with an 11 on top.

  • Stern is boss.

  • "What string are you wearing?", LOL

  • "What amplifiers do you use?"

    *Mike shows monster stereo*

"I like it because it's very easy to take around"

  • mmh string measures... 11, 13,15,26,32,38?

Okay: the first 10 string is exchanged with an 11. But the rest are NOT from a standard 10 - 46 set! String 3, 5 & 6 are way to thin..

But I agree with the high string being to weak on most guitars: most guitars sound better with extra tight first string..

  • @GuitarPolson

What an unbalanced set of strings. I can see where he's coming from, though. I have an 11 on a set of 9-42 strings and it actually feels pretty good.

  • he looks like mick jagger

  • @andrewm9999

or David Johansen from the New York Dolls days...

  • "Oh I forgot to ask you, what strings are you wearing?"

  • His Yamaha amp is in about the same shape as my yamaha bass amp of the same era. God I love that thing.

  • what kind of yamaha amp is this??

  • @tommy1gtr

    G100 212II is the exact model....I have one :)

  • this is really cool

  • I *love* the fact that this guy uses old, "comfortable" gear. CarlosGTR has it exactly right: The sound comes from the hands, head, and heart; the gear is just a set of tools.

  • he talks like marty friedman i think

  • Well, as you can see it's not the equipment, is the musician...

  • "oh yeah... I forgot to ask you what string are you wearing?"

  • Mike Stern is just awesome--really original and incredibly skilled. I've had the chance to see him live many times over the last 20 years. His sense of timing and groove are impeccable. Plus, he's a super nice guy. Props.

  • I just saw Mike in Vancouver with Alain Caron, Bob Franceschini & Lionel Cordew. He was "wearing" all those strings.

  • What string are you wearing?? HAHA that's great : )

  • @sandervandijck a g string;-)

  • wow 11 on top? thats heavy

  • @murdoches

i always use .011-.052 strings, in fact i like to fight with my guitar^^

Im still going mad, when i think about having missed the gig of mike stern and dave weckl, about 1 year ago, in the Jazzclub Minden.......

  • @murdoches not really, particularly not on jazz. wes or scofield play 0.14. That's heavy.

0.11. ist in fact labelled standard by most manufacturers.

009s came up in the eighties and should stay there :-)

  • @thailow117 009s aren't really 80s, jimmy page said that his trick was light strings.. even though i can'tr use 009s nwithout fear of breaking them haha!

  • A lead guitarist in my band a few years ago traded that Yamaha pacifica M.Stern model to me. It is a great guitar. We played classic rock and that guitar covered it all.

My main instrument is guitar but at the time I was the bassist. Oh, er, I mean they made me the bassist, because I had one. I still have the guitar and it sits on stage as the main backup.

  • I ask you..."What String are you wearing???"

    Mike...A G string...and 5 others

  • I'm pretty sure that the person on the left is Satoshi Inoue. He's a jazz guitarist from Japan who teaches at the New School for Social Research in New York. He's quite a good guitarist, and helped Jim Hall with his Jazz Guitar Master Class videos.

  • mike tu sei un MOSTRO!!!!!

  • foda!

    =D

  • I like it when the interviewer asks "what string are you wearing?"

Good thing Mike Stern isn't French as "string" means "thong" in French..:-0

  • He has a second DS1 way down the line in his signal chain. Usually guys keep the distortions up front. ANy comments why he would set that up that way?

  • Mike, I really hate to say this..... but in my school (note: not music collage, actual high school) we have that same old Yamaha amp and it's possibly the worst sounding amp I've ever heard!

  • @ibanezbloke

I actually have one - and I LOVE it... all about taste I guess ;)

  • I want to buy the guitar but I cant find a store in the US that has it. Anyone can help me where to find it?

  • Brazil

  • @eurabio: Probably any Yamaha dealer can order it for you if you place a down payment.

  • I have the Yamaha MS 1511 (Mike Stern) and it's an unbelievable guitar... Neck's smoothness is uniqu. And it's look is like a 52 reissue Tele with a Strat pickguard. Has sweet cream bindings. The one thing I don't like is the control panel. So I've upgrade it from RSguitarworks (vintage grey tiger caps, push/pull tone pot, also 3 compensed brass saddles, and chrome Duncan 59' hum for warmer sound)

You can find it at secondhand guitar sites... Thats where I've bought it from...

  • do you know the 1221 MS it s good guitar too??

  • @aintnaive I haven't tried it, but yamaya is making pretty good guitars. If its made in Japan, then buy it... Because usually Japans produce quality guitars then USA... But don't buy if its chinese, indonesian or korean stuff...

  • thanks!

  • maan !! 2:02 .. Makes me fly!

  • Setup has nothing to do with one' s ability to play.

  • Hey- the cat has his own sound and style and he kicks ass... I find him very refreshing.

  • don't get me wrong. I like Jeff Beck and I find him a great great guitar player. their styles are diferent so comparison is dificult, but, Mike has played with miles davis, dennis chambers, brecker brothers and also is a great songwriter. I don't see Jeff coming anywhere near.

  • @eurabio: Jeff Beck has done some brilliant Fusion records, but he comes at it as a Rock player playing Fusion rather than as a Jazz player playing Fusion. A little trivia note: Jeff Beck does not use pedals.

  • I don't have a clue what does your comment has to do with mine, or where does it contradict mine.

  • this guy on the left is so funny

  • @simgeej This is Satoshi Inoue, a former student of Jim Hall.

  • @simgeej He is what is known as a "dweeb".

  • I love his playing, but he smothers his tone with too many effects

  • Mike Stern super solo!!!

  • The other guitarplayer is Satoshi Inoue!

  • "what strings are you wearing?"

    Lol

  • A string bikini and a spagetti-strap evening gown--this season. :-)

  • why 2 delays ? ? ,

  • Why not i have 8 !

  • long and shot

  • hahaha, the interviewer asked him what string he was wearing!

  • what`s that last RED pedal?

  • Power supply.

  • Yeah he uses different amps...especially on Europe tours...

    It's strange how the strings (11) 13-15-26-32-38

You can't buy that combination in Denmark!

  • Yeah, that was what made me to go to "what the heck" at the end of of the vid! :-o But I remember Frank Marino telling in an interview: "yeah, 008 strings, ya can play really fast with 'em if you're skilled enough". But you can buy individual strings... naah, 10 for my Ibanez, 11 for my Fender.

  • Now he use 2 fender amp

  • Tks 4 the upload. its nice 2 hear mike talking about his equipment.

Hes great. One of my favs. I follow his carreer 4 years now.

    Tks again.

  • THANKS A LOT
