As a Chinese, I want to say there are a lot of Chinese people treat black people differently and i dont think that is right. Even though in America that has a large group of black people, people here still racism too, so its so normal it happens in China, because we dont really know them, so what you should do is make Chinese understand black people more but not posting this kind of weird and stupid "life"video. If you dont like China, please leave there! We dont want you there toooo!!

I've been there and have seen how they treat "darker skinned Chinese peasants" at the Shenyang Expo that build the beautiful flower arrangements there. Not Good. I have a Chinese lady friend that has told me all about the social status in Chinese society. Lighter skin represents wealth and power, darker skinned is associated with peasant farmers that are poor and regarded as "scum". Sad really, the Chinese society.

dear sir, i feel sad for your experience, but i have a black american friend who teaches in beijing from time to time, he is a well respected individual in that beijing institute. i also have black friends who are a lot darker than you and we were treated fine in china. i understand that chinese people can also be mean,just like anybody. but i observe that mainlanders tend to look at how people dress and how they groom or carry theirselves first than what their skin color is. wish you happines.

I disagree. I spend more than an hour a day grooming and preparing to be accepted by the Chinese society. There are people who will still choose not to sit next to me on the subway, there are parents who will still complain to the headmaster that they have a black teacher instead of a white one, there are still people who will point and laugh and ask how so black? The problems that you receive in China, in no way affect the lives of blacks in Japan or Korea. Yet they are still tags. And me, I think you're being way too negative. Maybe take the time to learn the language and the culture, and show them that you are thankful about being in their country. Racism is just something that stems from society's view over the years, cities like shanghai are nearly exclusively han chinese. You can't change their culture, the older generations will always be prejudiced towards blacks / colored people.

I would also suggest that if a person of color is trying to work in China that they go through a large well-known hiring agency or employment clearing house to do so.

For example my College only allows employment agencies that who are willing to hire ALL of its students to recruit on campus and advertise the help-wanted lists on the Alumni job website.

I think this way it cuts down a lot of bullcrap in dealing with questionable organizations who will unfortunately kowtow to ignorant beliefs.

And the photo isn't to ensure blacks aren't allowed for god's sakes. They also look at obesity, non-white, ugly, midgets, physical scars etc. In our world, we just judge that "subconsciously" in the interview but in China they're more upfront about it. in my opinion, I think there is a kind of stereotype that American equals white people. they have no idea about the inclusivity and the diversity of US citizen. Sorry to hear the racism you experienced in Shanghai. I believe it's true that racism exists anywhere, so there's no exception in China. As a Chinese here's how I see it. Generally it's fact many Chinese ppl don't like black people. The reason is very simple. It's because balck ppl's image on the news and movies are not very positive. BUT this is only a generalization. For individuals, Chinese people may still like him/her after knowing each other. This is stereotype just like many other places.

I think all races have bad people that act out in hollywood, so I think that is an excuse actually. The real answer is that dark skin is associated with working in the hot sun. I was born and grew up in China. China is a country needs to be reformed by Jesus' love. There is some racial discrimination in China for sure but in this specific case I believe the care more about candidates' accent - for the same reason they will not hire a Chinese English teacher, too. So pls don't be offended by this specific case - they may just not address it in the proper way.
