  • In 2012, the power of love is not echoed by the great Isaac Hayes, but by rappers and over night R&B singers who retaliate with degradational music toward women...right or wrong?

  • I have seldom listened to something so beautiful!

  • Ike's vocals, organ and then the horns drums and bass --still sends chills down the spine. Oh bye-bye, oh baby bye-bye, it's too late for you to cry. Exceptional rendition -- a heart-felt and soulful love song.

  • Wish i could have been in the room when this MASTER PIECE came to life,, timeless

  • Love is a serious ting !

  • this is what i call reality

  • i need to find this album

  • @TheGatorchaser Yes, I am going to Amazon, I have to find this LP also.

  • Have liked this since 1969

  • A TRUE CLASSIC !!!

  • AS I POSTED 5 MO. AGO IT IS STILL WHILE BEING A COVER OF A GREAT J. WEBB CLASSIC NO PISSING MATCH BETWEEN GLEN CAMPBELL VERSION. GLAD TO SEE YOU BEHAVING. UNLIKE CREEDENCE VS. MARVIN ON GRAPEVINE. IT IS DISGUSTING POSTS ON THE CCR COMMENTS PAGE.

  • Damn! Right song! :')

    so magic....

  • thanks for the post!!

  • Yeah the lyrics are great...love the organ at the end...rip 'em up Isaac! Bottom line though is for us "nice guys" to get some backbone. It's okay to love and be in love. However make sure it's a two-way street. If it ain't leave it alone knowing you gave it your best shot. Songs were written for a reason. Music is fine but be sure to listen to the lyrics, there may be a message there for you. Peace out. On my way to freedom.

  • very emotional song!

  • I still enjoy every second of this song, Love Isaac Hayes!

  • bogyfreeman @ABU309 YOU RIGHT THAT AMAZING U STILL REMEMBER I'M ALEXANDER FREEMANBASSPLAYER AND USE TO PLAY THE HELL OUT OF THIS SONG.

  • @jazzmanchgo, u kicking that musical knowledge, I lke that, we wanna keep the records straight! appreciate u... love, and this kind of music are almost one n the same, both can bring you to yur knees or lift you to high heavens, I don't know about the rest of you, but I know I need both, and Issac gave, in abundance, and it keeps on giving....just like real love. enjoy

  • Classic! EVERYTHING about this arrangement gets me. Isaac's rap, the strings, the horns, the organ, the bass....Damn! Why can't folks make music like this anymore???? The bassist gets his isht OFF!!!! Isaac was the ultimate arranger!!!

  • So is that CarlaTthomas' - she sang TRAMP with Otis Redding - litlle brother? must be

  • Ike took us on a journey with this song, I can respect it, I m a 55 year old head my house truck and wardrobe are tight as 5 toes in a sock, I appreciate this

  • An amazing cover version. I've added this to my FB group dedicated to covers. It's called "the Guilty Pleasure of the Cover Version" feel free to join in.

  • A CLASSIC MASTERPIECE AND IT SOUNDS SO BEAUTIFUL AND RELAXING.

  • Beware, this song should let those that think that they have such a fool that is so deeply in love you and will do anything for that person to please them that one day they too come to a decision where leaving is the best out when they have been mistreated.

  • Isaac Hayes had the ability to catch the true soul of a song and treat it as he pleased. This song should be considered an all time classic. R.I.P. Isaac.

  • its the greatest ever

  • When I was a kid, I used to listen to alot of Isaac Hayes albums on 8-Track tapes!!

  • @djbigpean lol me to,you are giving your age away lol

  • I grew up hearing this song and i still LUV IT

  • I LOVE THIS SONG

  • the heart feels the soul of the music...........

  • the truth moves you

  • from a country & western song Ike turns into a soul classic xx

  • omg

  • I kind of think Ike was talking too much on this record. Jus sayin

  • What would you perfer him to cut it short and miss the real meaning? I think it was right on time.

  • This was a song that I learned as a child, in the mid-70's, trying to make music on a wide variety of instruments. I remember the tune being on the Conn organ's demo tape, but sounding like a Wurlitzer. Isaac's version blows the others away for being able to really capture the emotions involved.

  • Let's travel with Ike

  • This is inspirational..ooo my..enjoyed every minute...and here i go clicking replay.....

  • in college, i listened to this song every night before (lights out). it was a powerful song, and a treasure for all. issaic did it right, even though it was long, but it was great soul music!! r.i.p. issaic. you are truly missed.

  • Today is the day!! I Never can say goodbye! I jst pry I make thrh tomrw!! World that will never last believe in your higher power! Keep Jesues fist**** PB&A

  • Merveilleuse chanson.

    Merci Isaac Hayes

  • I remeber this song so well and I even seen people get hurt behind exactly what he is talking about. if you ever been in love remember actions like this can cause a person to get kill and if you take someone heart and abuse it all hell will brake loose women will take far more than a man but a man will loose control easily and not realize what they have done . remember a man is'nt suppose to cry so they become enraged and then the damage is done thanks for the memories

  • I remeber this song so well and I even seen people get hurt behind exactly what he is talking about. if you ever been in love remember actions like this can cause a person to get kill and if you take someone heart and abuse it all hell will brake loose women will take far more than a man but a man will loose control easily and not realize what they have done . remember a man is'nt suppose to cry so they become enraged and then the damage is done

  • Those last 3 minutes is what I wait for every time. Best finish to a song I've ever heard.

  • Thanks for posting, this piece rips my heart apart and puts it back together again.

  • What more can I say? now I'm 50 y.o. and I have no words just like 35 years ago...

  • As a drummer, I love the intro of this song. By the time the song gets toward the end, I'm ALWAYS in tears because Isaac knew how to get that "Emotional Workout" going inside of you. Especially when you really LISTEN to the lyrics, this was and still is some serious shit that was being said. I've been there.

  • @Chalenger303 - I concur. It doesn't get much deeper then this. All the negative energy that you have left inside, he exposes it, brings it out, and discards it.

  • @Chalenger303, I am also in tears. I can remember listening to this back in the 70's with my uncle Jerome in his 1970 Super Sport Chevy with his top down in City Park in Denver on Sunday. afternoon. He was in his twenties and I was about 12 or 13 years old then.

  • @Chalenger303 Yes,I agree. He had the gift to pull out the innermost feelings and they lyrics would make you just sit now and think.....Miss you Black Moses

  • @Chalenger303 the drummer's Willie Hall from The Bar Kays. He's done some nice work with them.

  • NEVER EVER GET TIRED OF THIS SONG!!!

  • When I was 10 this song was 2 long (the introduction). Now I'm 51 and its perfect

  • I remember this Song... I remember the Party... and I remember the SlowDrag and the Lady in the corner while We grinded and kissed for the entire length of this Jam.

    Have mercy... the slowdrag:

If You don't know about that, ask Ol' School!

  • This song is a Masterpiece .

  • This song did away with the three min air play song on the radio!

  • I really wonder what the man was going through in his personal life at the time he wrote this song? This is a really deep song.

  • "BRILLIANT"

  • I never heard this song until today. All I can say is AMAZING!!!!! The man....wow...I feel like anything I say would be an understatment. One of the best songs these ears have ever heard! This song spoke to my soul, I have been in a situation like this before. Thanks for posting this song.

  • Mr Haynes was rapping long before rap came to be. This real rap.

  • Petite, pretty, intelligent woman. We're no match, but drawn to each other. We'd drink a cool one or too many.Married cuz baby was on the way;she lost it.I worked ro- tating swing/grave shifts;she'd party alot. • @AldeGrey

    I hear Ya!

I feel for Ya too... been there... felt that.

I'm better for having been through it... 22 years ago.

  • PHENOMENAL! Ive heard the slightly shorter version of this; with the story shortened some and the actual song but I never knew it was this long. Im so hurt I never got to see him perform in person. My parents used to play all his records back in the day. RIP Mr. Hayes. You are truly missed but your music will live on forever...

  • I remember when I was younger and listening to this cut,I would see this story play out in my head like a movie,Right when Isaac Hayes says that "These words came out his mouth."I'm seeing that my boy behind the wheel starts singing and getting carried away to the point he has a full drums, horn section, violins that he picked up on the way to phoenix.

  • my god the last 5-6 minutes are unreal!

  • @sms1189 Its Intense.

  • 1 Comment.. Issac Iz Da Man!!!

  • I lived all of the Isaac Hayes drama

  • Man...I grew listening to this. I lost this old school "Best of Issac Hayes" tape back in 1992 or something. I lost that tape....never could find the full version of this particular song. This is appreciated.

  • Possibly the greatest thing of any kind anywhere ever.

  • Me and my brother use to play Issac Hayes tape until it damn near poped. We loved this song

  • Wow this takes me back. I have heard them all, Hot Buttered Soul, Black Moses. My aunt had all of Hayes Albums and played them frequently. Glad she introduced me to his music and more.

  • Comment removed

  • when i was 14 i had got stone for the first time o.m.g. it was out of this world i'll never forget that night i felt like i was in the song its was the first song i really put my heart and soul in it jest beautiful song

  • hey, is this a song from a soundtrack? does anybody know?

  • @fernandezbelen no its not

  • @fernandezbelen I THINK FROM MOVIE DEAD PRESIDENTS

  • This was the first relased album of Isaac Hayes. I didn't know at the time that he and David Porter wrote most of the Memphis Sound music, like Sam and Dave's hits. Isaac also played a mean sax. He played in many of the Memphis Sound's house bands. A true genius. I was blessed to see him 3 times, and each time he wouldn't leave the stage until they cut off the power. He gave you your money's worth for real!

  • @abu309 He had an album before this one entitled "Presenting Isaac Hayes". It was an afterparty jam session with Steve Cropper, Duck Dunn, and Al Jackson. It's is a nice album with a jazzy feel. I have a copy of the album. It is a rare find.

  • @abu309 Well . . . technically, "Hot Buttered Soul" was Isaac's second released LP. The first, "Presenting Isaac Hayes," was a trio session with Al Jackson and Duck Dunn, recorded in early '68. Unfortunately, Ike and the others had been drinking that night, and the music never really came together. A few years later, Ike came back with this one, which was an instant classic. One of the great accomplishments of soul music history. By the way, that's Marvell Thomas, Rufus's son, on piano.

  • THIS IS WITHOUT A DOUBT THE BADEST LOVE SONG......EVER....PERIOD.....THIS AND A COUPLE MORE HE MADE....

  • I love this song period!

  • Beautiful, blows me away each time i hear it. Thank You Issac, Rip. LOVE!

  • In my opinion, the best version of this song. Also, one of my all time favorite songs.

  • Cool song.

  • This is pure class x R I P xxx

  • I too feel your pain, megagoldenleaf. LA to Chicago, 2005. I came back to her 3 months later and we got married shortly after. I hate to tell you but it was the best decision I ever made.

  • Masterpiece.

  • soul food

  • What can YOU do when you are constantly riduculed and your character has been killed sssssssooooooo MANY times over something that didn't EXSIST???? My CHI CHI has exit my life over spectulation and accusations that he put upon ME. I'm PERPLEXED and hurt because he chose to have inklings instead of the naked TRUTH!!! I LOVE HIM and he is forever on my MIND.

  • I miss the songs that takes you on a trip like this one-just tune out the world and just listen...

  • Thank you SO MUCH for posting this....I LOVE it...smooothhhhh

  • I feel your pain megagoldenleaf

  • I too had to leave before I got a case! That was the longest drive from Los Angeles back to Texas. Forty years, you'd think I would have gotten over all that. Damn I still miss her.

  • We talking bout 20:min damn near........that's real music....it's a cold story

..."and on the eight time...he said mama....I can't take it no more he packed his lil rags & jumped in his 65 Ford ...three times he started to turn back..before he reached the outskirts of town......ah I don't wanna leave ...but I got to go.... "

ah! lawd.....he took 8times of her *&^%% around before he would leave.......he should have put her %^&*to work.

  • it's a deep tune

  • "I'm gonna moan now.....!"

  • truly stunning!

  • I never get tired of this. I have more than one version of this song, including Jimmy Webb's (duh case its his lol) and even Marvin Gaye's and that one is very rare because it was never really recorded. Some people I know felt that Isaac's was too long, but I begged to differ. It was just right, perfect and deep. He went deeper with his version, with a story behind it and everything. It's a lot of feeling and understanding. Beautiful and yet sad. You had piano, flute, flow and that voice. R.I.P

  • Thank you a million times over for this song & others. We Miss You Isaac Hayes (Black Moses), You were truly an original poet in music, and other artistic creative disciplines... UNIQUE GENIUS.

  • what a song what a singer... deep!

  • In the sixties when in college I must have heard this song over 1000 times -- especially when one of the guys had gotten 'S H A F T E D" by his lady. Simply put no one will ever approach doing it like Issac.

  • "I'm gonna bring it on down to soulsville...

...I want you to bear along with me for a few minutes, while I set it up

    ...I want your imagination...

...I want you to travel with me..."

  • @pamxtom

    yes lawd

  • this is one of THE GREATEST love songs ever written and Isaac Hayes does it better than anyone evver has. Thankyou man. J.D.

  • this is literally the best song ever.

  • @dyermaker71 Absolutely. Listening to a story like this, shows that you should never take people for granted, especially if they love you that much. "You kick a dog around for so long, that he'll get tired and turn". Amen. She had a good man and didn't even appreciate him. I bet that's what really happened to Jimmy Webb and what inspired him to write such a deep beautiful tune.

  • @ChicagoTyme Maybe. But Jimmy Webb never wrote that lyric you quote. All the spoken intro is Isaac's. Jimmy wrote the original song but his words only start with the verse "By the time I get to Phoenix she'll be rising / She'll find the note I left hangin' on her door / She'll laugh when she reads the part that says I'm leavin' / 'Cause I've left that girl so many times before"
