Until RM Nixon the GOP was the moderate Whig party the same as compassionate conservatives and the donkey were made up of working class whites. Once the Democratic party became the blue collar party since JFK they became the blue color again.

Actually... JQ Adams didnt run against James Monroe; Monroe ran unopposed in 1820. What happened was one elector from I think it was New Hampshire voted for JQ Adams as president, instead of Monroe.

And the reason the Donkey is the symbol for Democrats is because in a election, Andrew Jackson's oppenent called him a Jackass. He liked that, so it became the icon for Dems.

Thanks for the maps. I noticed that the republican and democrat states are almost the complete opposite from what it was 100 years ago. Also I sure miss seeing other parties making it on the map. Just blue and Red is getting boring. I'd like to see the Constitution party and the libertarian party make it on the 2008 map. Also the take all electoral votes in a state is in full swing now these days. States being split up because of the difference in districts have gone on the wayside.

It is really annoying that these maps used blue for republicans and red for democrats. I know that in other countries it is typically red for progressives and blue for conservatives but this is the USA and I don't want to have to convert every slide with my brain.

Well, if you see, he uses red for Republicans later on, because most of the Republican policies/voting base was what Democratic policies used to be earlier. The voting base completely changed after the 1964 election because Democrats alienated hicks and racists with their policy of treating black people like human beings, a novel idea that the South was not used to.

Yeah, well, it's not the name, but the voting base that counts. Most of the time, the liberal party controlled the nation. Theodore Roosevelt, one of the Republican Party's greatest presidents, formed a new party called the progressives, something which is a more Democratic than Republican. Also, he wanted Universal Healthcare, and supported the environment.
