I do wish the MBTA used these Genesis locomotives; I wonder how they would've looked in that purple-and-silver MBTA paint scheme? Usually they use F40PHs, and occasionally older GP40-MCs and a couple of brand new MP36s.
Nowadays these (at least the P42 version) are the ONLY diesel locomotives I see Amtrak use.
wow, those drivers like to sound their horns!! here in the uk the drivers dont sound the horn unless their warning people on the track ( maintanance crew ) or passing a station
@billywhite1231998 well the uk trains are better protected from pedestrians and road vehicles. American pedestrians and road vehicle drivers are generally more reckless. In all the crossings in this clip, the train was required to blow the horn by law.
Even around that time, three of them were already gone, among them, I remembered #819 being involved in the Big Bayou Canot wreck just outside Mobile,Al. It was a pretty disturbing sight.
What was the number of that first genesis locootive? If it was #825, which I think it was, then I have that EXACT Genesis locomotive in HO Scale! It still runs pretty well, even though it fell once, but it's very durable. I don't run it very often anymore because I don't have many good passenger cars for it to pull, only 2 NJ Transit cars and some others. Also, I have 2 Amtrak Acela Express Sets, both of which run like crap, but that's life and I should be happy that both of them run at all.
I always wondered why the red light in the middle between the two flashing strobe lights? When the F-40's pulled the Crescent, the round red light between the number boards would flash on ocassion, just wondering about that.
@p42Amtrak83 The P40's strobe lights were something I missed on the P42, but hell, it was just another thing that could get broken and the mechanics already had their hands full. Damn shame.
@anomalousclouds: "heritage equipment".. yes, since those cars made up the trains Amtrak took over. "Heritage Paint Scheme" (like the locomotives painted for Amtrak's 40th Anniversary) no. The paint schemes Amtrak has had in its existence were never painted on something that preceded Amtrak. "Retro" or "Anniversary" is correct for those locomotives.
dude all Amtrak units should have K5LA's like that. Today they are now putting these 3rd generation K5LA's on some of them, and messing with some of the old ones, and very few sound good anymore. Nice vid
Those P40DCs were great before 2000. Those flashing strobe lights were very unique on the engines. It's unfortunate that the P42s didn't have them, but it really wouldn't matter as the P42s had flashing ditch lights by the time they were in revenue service. P40s were the best diesels Amtrak owned. They are at the top of that list along with the late F40PH and the classic E8/E9 units.
Awesome stuff man. Love the footage from the dome cars! My Dad and I used to do the same thing with the Lake Shore Limited around the same time; unfortunately we didn't own a video camera then.
awesome vid, I remember seeing those my first time in Like 93 or 94, I think 94 when I was 4. THey looked great and the horns were good, love the flashing lights, its good they still have some running again, but I think they are in the new paint, Hope I See one someday
@spazman13579 Before ditchlights were mandatory, Amtrak liked to put strobes on all their locomotives. Other engines that had strobes included the F40, P32, P30CH, GP40, GP40-TC, AEM-7, and FL9. Sometime in 2000 the P40s had their strobes removed and were equipped with ditchlights that could alternate. If you notice in this video, the ditchlights on the P40s were not setup to flash like they are now.
@kmothersil you have a reference pic somewhere? Yeah those things were pretty interesting too. I even saw a pic of a late SDP40F with a K5LA on twin brackets where the old S4T use to be mounted.
Awesome video man! Wow, the Genesis locomotives sure looked good in phase III. I loved it when the P40DC's were in full force. Its unfortunate 819 had to go in the Bayou Canot wreck, which you'd be very familiar of probably. I wonder if your dad got any footage of it? Considering some of this was filmed before September 22nd. Anyways though, i really miss the old version of the Genesis locomotives, was just better in my opinion.
@RailfanDaniel Its funny you mentioned that wrecked engine. On the same VHS I took this footage from, my dad also recorded the news reports of the Sunset accident. I've wondered myself if one of these unknown P40s was 819 too!
@WhistlepostWP Well, it was around the same time, and the locations you and your dad filmed wasn't at all too far from it. It is funny though that it was on the same VHS! I wouldn't be surprised if 819 was one of them. Might be from different footage though.
@RailfanDaniel yeah, now that I think about it I don't think any of the locos in this footage could be 819. The clip @ 06:31 was right before my dad taped the Sunset crash reports...then clip 07:23 was recorded after the live report of the Sunset crash.
@WhistlepostWP Yeah, your probably right. You did catch 818 i see, so close! Although, did you know that 827 and 829 were scrapped too? They were involved in the 1999 Bourbonais, Illinois collision with a truck carrying steel. They both caught fire and were severely damaged. Its possible maybe one of those two were filmed? Be cool to see the 90s of Amtrak back though.
@RailfanDaniel yeah, my dad taped that accident on VHS too. I have two more VHS tapes from 1993-1995 I can check. One of those P40s might be on there.

These nearly new P40s are having their cobwebs and rust cleaned out and refurbished for regular service thanks to the ARRA act.

Damn, phase III really suited these. Nice seeing all that heritage (am I right in using that term?) equipment, too.

They should remanufacture the Leslie RS-4T horn that was used only on the SDP40Fs.

Thanks for sharing this!!! Excellent!!! Love those strobe lights on there, too bad they don't have those on the P-42's!!! Thumbs up & favorite again!

Thanks for sharing your dad's great footage to us!
