  • This thing is coming up with some pretty amazing sounds, though I'm frankly only judging this as a casual listener not a hardcore synth geek...

  • I've seen this synth in a couple of hall and oates videos, therefore it is good. :P

  • This rev3 is good but would sound a like a toy next to a good rev 2. Rev 3's have punch but can sound canned. A rev 2 is living three dimensional organic liquid. never canned!

  • @TheSongsparrow rev2 really isn't that much better sounding at all, i had one before and now have a rev3 and it's great and doesn't stop working all the time!

  • didnt omd use this quite heavy on a couple of there early albums?

  • Best synth ever? Or rather, best polysynth ever? Hmm JP8? Or Pro 5? Or.......wait for it...Korg Polysix??? Off ya go.

  • There are companys out there that will take advantage of the synth buyer's want of tone. Dont fall for the over priced stuff that isn't backed up with a service warranty. If it's as good as they say it is, then it would be backed up and then some. Don't buy into a lie. And remember, people who do pay those for those over priced synth's will always defend spending that much. Prophets are great but most of them are dying a slow death.

  • @TheSongsparrow In the gumtree small ads there are two different Prophets for sale in London, yet the photo of each is identical. They can't both be selling the same one. Very odd.

  • If I could pick an old one, I'd choose Elka Synthex, Prophet 5, or Jupiter 6 or 8. They sound the nicest and have large controls. I have sight problems. People must be asking too much because lots of ads stay up a long time. There's 3 P5s for sale in UK Ads, there over a month. The cheapest working is 1.5K! Kawai sx240 and Akai AX80 don't cost so much if you can find them.

  • I have a Prophet 5 that needs to be serviced but I'm afraid it may be irreparable.

  • Warm, phat, analog sounds are the way forward since they came about.

These new digital tracey synths are and will always be boring!

Sure bring them out and use them for dance records, but bring back our warm, phat, analog synths so we can create wonderful sounds with them!

  • @Mattyuk1

And that's why dance records sound best with vintage synths.

  • @VectronMusic I was just thinking similar — no, don't use digital on dance tracks, use analog on those as well! :)

  • @Mattyuk1 Dance music's origins pre-date the introduction of digital synths. The most ubiquitous sounds of those genres were analogue.

  • The reason why your comment has been thumbs down is coz you're comparing a SH 201 VA synth to a Analog Prophet 5 which is one of the most legendary Synths of ALL time. The SH 201 is like a Micra compared to this Mustang!

The SH 201 is a good Synth, It cuts Costs. But the sound of this synth is Deap, Fat, Sharp, Resonate Multi Layered, Ethereal & so much more powerful than the SH 201. Put it this way, I would gladly give up my SH 201 for this anyday!

  • yeah true the sh-201 is analog modelling and it tends to sound a bit thin. but my ARP odyssey MK-II sounds amazing. :)

i'd love to own a prophet 5 such a warm sound.

  • M8, I'd KILL for an ARP Odessey Mk II! They are so rare now because they went bust & the Keys were not made all that well unlike the rest of the beautiful machine.. It's hard to find one in good order nowa days. I don't get why Analog synthesizers aren't being made anymore. Just these Plastic VA synths. Oh, & the amount of Stage Synths on the market is rediculous.

Moog seem to be the only ones out there now :(

  • thanks man i love my MK-II maybe if and when i think of selling it i'll look ya up. :)

i know i hate that. what happened to the great old analog synths like the CS-80, MS-20, Prodigy, jupiter 8..... etc.

we need more great classics like those especially to show up all those friggin VST users. ANOLOG FOREVER!!! :D

  • That's what I'm taliking about! You've got it on the head there man! Where are all the Classics? The Micro Korg? The SH-201? The Akai Miniak? Are THESE the great classics of today?

It's ridiculous. No wonder everone's going VST when they see those plastic awful sounding things on the market.

When are Korg, Roland, Yamaha etc going to wake up? Even the mighty Virus Ti sounds trancey! And what if I don't want a Moog? Moog have a too strong charater. I want something subtle yet up front. ANALOG!!

  • You sir, need either a prophet 08 or an Alesis Andromeda... even the Dave smith analog digital hybrids are ground breaking in their design

  • Yeh! I've seen & Drooled over the Andromeda before! But I don't have alot of Money or an EMS Synthi would be on my list! Along with an ARP Oddessey MK III, a Mini-Moog® & The Oberheim OB12! My Next Purchase is the Dark Wave Modular Analog Synthesizer.. For Only £350? It's a Steal! And a Good Start to getting into the Crazy World Of Modular where instruction Manuels are Burnt as a Ritual!

BUT.. If you Like.. You could always find me the World's Rarest & Most Intense Synth? the EMS Synthi 100!!!

  • I'd rather buy a 2nd prophet-5 than buy a prophet 08.

...I'd also rather buy an original minimoog than a voyager.

  • sounds awesome. i love vintage synths, but i really need some playing lessons!

  • Would anyone happen to know what preset the song Bette Davis Eyes would have been on?

  • I don't think it was a preset, but it def. was a prophet-5

  • did this mr.duron purchase an ms-20 off of me?

  • Lovely!!!

    Thanks for posting..........

  • great soundz !!

i had the six-track. no knobs - no fun ...

  • I like P5 because it's like 30 years old, and sounds dirty/analog/vintage...

So I would never buy a new analog synth... for me new synth = digital.

But man, I do like old synths!!! I don't know what makes them so good...

  • best demo evr.

  • splitsides - Synthesizer Service Centre in west london ( it'll come out top on google if you type that in ) is the best in the south, not sure about the north.

  • the Po8's a different and new synth that really does different things - a lot of people like both. P5 will always be the big daddy of sequential.

  • some people have described the p8 is being better for electronica and 'pure' sounds on the treble. all a question of preference.

  • I'm purchasing a rev 3 in the next few weeks. Cannot wait! For servicing in the UK, can anyone recommend?

  • yup , i can recommend KSR in surrey. If you contact me via youtube ill give you his details. he is THE MAN when it comes to all things analog.

  • yep, I have $2500 saved up.

I am not buying the Prophet '08. I need old school!

  • Yep, the P08 is weak sauce compared to the P5!

  • Hy, hey, guys...are we forgetting the Prohpet 10?!?!

  • Having us a P5 rev 3.3 and P'08 extensively,I dont agree with that at all. The P5 has a slightly bigger and dirtir sound....but the P'08 is equally a warm, just as punchy (punchier actually)and is more musical/versatile. The best of both worlds.

  • I am going to have to disagree here...

Having owned a prophet 5 rev 3 for the last 8 years, then recently playing a prophet 08, I can say that the 8 is not as warm.

    (neither is the poly evolver)

There is something more harsh/digital sounding about all of the new Dave Smith synths.

    MR. FUNK

  • I agree with you. My Prophet 08

    kind of sound "Digital".

  • very nice

  • good job. can i hear more of the prophets sounds
