  • Happy Birthday Geddy!!!

  • Rush's humble roots, hear Geddy Wail, the band was already in sync. Making Millions my dream you did that and beyond.

  • Nice

  • Always liked this one - it's like the only generic "rock" song they ever did w/Neil. Can you imagine Neil writing "leave me alone and let me rock and roll!"-style lyrics?!

  • Man they sound wicked, verrrrrrrrrrry vicious

  • I love Rush, but check out 1:51. Geddy actually hits some sour notes! This might be the only recorded mistake ever!

  • @taintarse that sounded kinda sick actually haha

  • Why is Rush not in rock and roll hall of fame?

  • @doughnutboy99 Dont know?.........

  • @doughnutboy99 Because they SUCK!...

P.S. I'm talking about the R&RHF sucking, not Rush, they're awesome of course.

  • a brief view of rash history

    fitted and fatted and founded

  • Enter the Great Communicator

  • Original Drummer John Rutsey playing Best I Can in video response.

  • to think that they were all just 22 years of age here and about to change music history! fucking awesome minds balanced with exeptional timing and chemistry, it just doesnt happen anymore, bands are formed then onto something else nowadays, rush are amazing x

  • @blowmyroot actually 19

  • God they still had the road in them here. No, they always have the road in them. Here they still have the club in them! What a voice Geddy has. While all of my friends were making the jokes I was so taken in by how he could phrase and convey a mood by his gifted tonality. Only the best orators can do this. If you can't pick up on this you're apparently oblivious and that's just too bad.

  • @paulj0557 I agree - and they still had the straight ahead rock vibe in them from their club days. Neil certainly helped changed things but I also liked it when they rocked out in the early days - high energy, interesting lines, energetic power trio. Lots of younger Rush fans don't like the early Rush stuff (maybe because they weren't around then) but for those of us who grew up seeing them in the clubs this was the vibe we knew early on. And they took off in a big way.

  • Rush es bien chingón...oh yeah!!!

  • this is some serious old-school kick-ass RUSH!

  • what does geddy say before you can tell me that i got no class?

  • @expertgamerz101 "I'm not into that scene".

  • @splintercellfan2007 no before that where he usually says blankers and boasters all the bluffers and posers

  • @expertgamerz101 - he sings (verse 1) "i'm not into that scene," and (verse 2) "i'm an impatient cat."

  • @Th0masBivens NOO!!!!! where is sounds like he is saying "ohhh there some guys and a crool who thinks hes real cool". that part what does he say on that part!

  • They all look young here. After they went all keyboards they looked way older. Especially Alex.

  • That's one ugly chic!

  • @Zboots Bite you tongue!!

  • yes!! yes! i love old raunchy rush..

  • Still badasss!!!!!!

  • MADE IN CANADA!!!

  • I'd love to see this entire midnight special in its entirety. I've seen Finding My Way and In The Mood, now this. there has to be more... ????

  • make small talk., minions...droll as drab, middletown

  • guitar hero has featured several rush songs in their games working man,the trees, the spirit of radio all have been featured in either guitar hero or rock band

  • It's too bad they speed this up so much!

  • Man, Ged's voice was always so awesome when he would really push it and drive it.

  • @gmmakesmehurl --Its unfortunate that he just killed his voice with all of the raspy screaming by the early 80's. I'm sure smoking didn't help much either.

  • "Got my sights on the stars, won't get that far but I'll try anyway"

You guys have been to the stars & back. Rush is the fuckin best! Can't wait for the new stuff this year.

  • I simply love hearing Geddy scream his head off! I'm sure they had no idea they'd ever make it this far!

  • man this is real Rock, unlike the shit people call music these days uggghh. Lerxst is God!

  • one of the most under rated rush songs. one of my all time favorites

  • this song deserves to be a lot more famous than it is.

  • what a great show, shot at merv griffin(TAV) studios on selma ave in hollywood, right down the street from capitol records..me and my best friend ryan went yo see it live..RUSH at there BEST!..but we did see them a year BEFORE at the whiskey au gogo for the first record..i remember seeing all the poles on cahunga blvd with posters of the first album cover..i think i still have one.

  • Totally stole that bass from Paul!

Geddy is excellent, Neil's superb, Alex is as great as always!

    Rush forever!!!!

  • Wow, what a find! I've never seen this one in concert, b/f! MANY THANKS for posting!

  • Where did you find this!? 5 stars!

  • Rockin' tune - hence my 'handle'!!

  • even if this is a shite vid rush rule

  • this was actually on October 9, 1974

  • wow how do u know

  • because i have the full show and at the end it has the credits and it has the date it was recorded (October 9, 1974)

  • Alex Lifeson!

  • @Zeppelinfan25 -he was actually singing, even more astounding is that i heard him. alex rocks

  • Any real Rush fan wouldn't need to see his face to know that's Neil back there. He always looks down when he's really getting into it!

  • any rush fan would realize that this was recorded in '75...so, obvioulsy thats peart.

  • one of my favorite Rush songs....kickass!!!

  • Always great to hear this song ... despite crappy video footage and poor audio quality.

  • notice how you can't see rutseys face.....

  • hmmm - probably because it's Neil playing

  • Lol!

  • Exactly lol

  • Hey, all he said was that you can't see rutsey's face! I guess he's right!

Poor John died last year. He has a place in rock history.

  • maybe because thats not John Rutsey playing drums, its Neil Peart..sheesh!!

  • Uh, Neil Peart joined in July of 1974...

  • Ya this rocks

  • 2:10 = epic other animal calling.. Rush is the best!!

  • best geddy lee scream at 2:10

  • Did anyone else notice how Geddy Lee is playing his bass? He isn't playing directly over the neck pickup like he does any other time I've seen him. Maybe it was before he was going for that aggressive Chris Squire influenced sound?

  • yeah his bass tracks sound different back in the fly by night days

  • I you watch him now, you're right it's usually over the neck pickup. But if you watch in videos from Rush in Rio for example he moves his right hand a lot.

  • What more can you say...They ROCK!!!Love this old simple stuff!!

  • Jesus, RUSH makes all band seem like shit. They rule live. Guitar Hero must get some RUSH on their games.

  • rock band had several awsome rush songs for it

  • they had YYZ on gh2

  • @ki55army they have yyz, bout it.

  • @ki55army did you see Rush playing rock band video game? It's on the Colbert Report web site. They must have a sense of humor--more than I expected to be honest, and I'm speaking as a fan for over 30 years

  • @ki55army Rockband has Tom Sawyer on it

  • Every concert I have been to since I went to see Rush has sucked.

  • you must have been at the wrong shows man. rush kills live, first hand.

  • I Think he meant that all other bands suck compared to Rush

  • Exactly!

  • oh wow haha i misunderstood that too. you should have said every OTHER concert i have been too. dorry for the thumbs down

  • they must have recorded this before they released Fly By Night. I notice the lyrics are different.

  • Pure fucking gold.

  • Geddy Lee & RUSH Make A Cameo Appearance In The Film "I LOVE YOU MAN" In Theaters On March 20, 2009 VERY COOL..........

  • Hey buddy, Geddster's a dude. Haven't you heard the very infamous saying? Geddy doesn't sing like women, women sing like Geddy. He's got the range anybody dreams of. Rush, the greatest band to date. They're rumored to make another concept album ( 2112, Hemispheres), but they deny it for the most part.

  • @mRtReMeLo 2112 and hemispheres weren't concept albums, they just both had long songs on them

  • @tommorellorules-- They Were known as concept albums by Rush themselves.

  • @mRtReMeLo If I ever get to see 2112, Hemispheres, A Farewell to Kings, or Caress of Steel live... There are no words I can use to explain to you how I would feel.

  • @Ryu12543 damn dude you should go to a time machine tour show they play 2112

but they play it detuned :(

    but its still awesome :D

  • @expertgamerz101 I did see it live, but they don't play the whole song live, and I would love to see the rest of one of their '70s albums. I would probably like Caress of Steel the most, CoS and 2112 are my two favorites.

  • @Ryu12543 dude i love caress of steel

necromancer and fountain of lamneth all the way man :)

  • @expertgamerz101 Yeah, definitely the most underrated album ever. I would love to see Cygnus X-1 1 and 2, La Villa Strangiato, Xanadu, 2112, The Necromancer, The Fountain of Lamneth, and By-Tor and the Snow Dog all in their entirety in one show, my life would be changed forever. All of their epics in one night would blow me away.

  • @mRtReMeLo I would love it if they did at least one more concept album.

  • @mRtReMeLo and they failed except for Deborah Dalbello, she does sound like geddy and I wouldn't date her if she normally sounded like that. That is not what a woman is supposed to sound like. Women can be either alto or above. Geddy is not alto he is high tenor. as is Johnney(Bassman) Cymbol.

  • @mRtReMeLo Well they've recently said Clockwork Angels will be an album length story.

  • They call me the working man..Thats what i am

  • I woke up w/Geddy Lee basslines in my mind..

  • So did he.

  • Dude, it's hard to believe that is Geddy in this video. He looked so great! I am feeling my heart melt right now.

  • haha me too!

and that last scream he dose is amazing

this is my fav vid ot wach

  • Wow, high energy. Holy crap is Geddy ever wailing!

  • Like Always!!!!!

  • love that polyester look

  • Geddy really sings as a vicious bastard.

And than to know he's such a lovely guy.

    Great pure energy, love it

  • this song sounds amazing live!

    especially when he screams oooooahhhhhh!!!!

    i love that! xD

  • Odd to see Alex singing on the chorus since he doesn't on the album

  • Maybe he likes to :-D

  • The are one of the best. Individually and as a group.

  • Neil used to kick it in the A. Just goes thru the motions any more. LOVED old Rush!

  • He's also 33 years older and playing 3 hour shows instead of the 40-minute opening act shows that they were playing at this time. Cut the greatest drummer of all time some slack. Check out O Baterista if you think he's going through the motions.

  • All the World's a Stage was no 40 minute gig! Most drummers only improve with age, until even their 70's. I am a better drummer in my 40's than I was @ 22. True, I do need to build my endurance for solos, which is hard to come by, being a dad and working 50+ hrs a week, but even with brutal injuries I rcv'd in an accident,I still can do 3 hr gigs, and wail the crap out of those skins! I thought he went thru the motions in '83, on the solo from "Exit"..No fire! BTW, Greatest drummer ever=Weckl!

  • I never said All the World's a Stage was a forty minute gig. If you read my post it said "opening act". At no time did I say ATWS. Not sure what a "Weckl" is. Either way, I don't see it equalling the greatest ever. Everyone has their opinion and yours wasn't well thought out. Thank you for replying.

  • Abilities are not that important sometimes in music, actually in fact, they account for very little. It is the making of beats and being able to play them well that make you an awesome drummer. I do not know many drummers who are claimed to be the best in the world by doing covers.

  • Yes man, but Neil Peart did that on the 70's not on the 90's. This is 30 years ago... Respect pioneers.

  • Was this where Neil broke a bass drum head during the shooting of this song, on ABC Television In Concert series, that was aired on December 6, 1974?

  • Cheers. That's twice you've told me that tonight. ;-)

  • Well that's because you asked me twice :D

  • Saw them blasting this out live to a thrilled Newcastle City Hall two years after this was recorded, fantastic stuff.

  • Did they play it at Newcastle? It wasn't in the set for other UK shows.

  • Yes, they did. What You're Doing was intended as the final encore I'm sure, but the City Hall crowd was going mental and they came back on and Best I Can was the last tune of the night. They looked knocked out by the reception they'd had from the Newcastle crowd.

  • Great Song! I love the Fly By Night album.

Bunch of good songs and a really nice production.

  • This has to be earlier than 1975, it has different lyrics

  • Geddy looks like Yoko Ono from the late '60s

    :-)

  • they're playing this waaaayyyyy too fast!

  • lol that's how i feel too, buddy :D

  • And when exactly is Rush waiting to release this? the year 3 million? Put it out already!

  • Uhhhhhh. It's off their first album..........

  • Second album.

  • First with Neil***

  • Was this after fly by Night, because it was 1975, I don't know if it was after february or before

  • yes, it's the professor

  • I saw Rush '75. Last gig of a tour opening for KIss at the Civic Theater in San Diego. Before Rush could start their encore, members of Kiss came on stage and threw cream pies in their faces. They wiped off what they could and did their encore.

When Kiss played their set,& was about to do a third encore, Rush did the same to them. Funniest thing I've ever seen on stage in all my years of concert going.

  • bassandgitarreguy, i read i think im going bald on Caress of Steel is a tribute to Kiss' i think im going blind, or something. i didn't knew y till now.

  • Actually, it's a tribute to Max Webster. He was one of their best friends in the 70's.

  • great song off a great album

  • I've never been a rush fan.

But now I'm actually really appreciating how good they were.

  • I remember when I was 14 and bought RUSH Archives just after Christmas 1981. I was totally hooked on that RUSH to CARESS OF STEEL period. I wish I had video footage of Rush playing that stuff then. It`s SO good to have it now. I prefer YES to Rush nowadays...but I will always hold a place in my heart for Rush...they were awesome then. Such idiosynchracy within the confines of such quasi macho-rock. Love this period of Rush!

  • "I just like to please, don't like to tease, I'm FUNNY like that"

uh oh, Geddy messed up a line.

Or maybe they wouldn't let him say easy.

  • well baby! i'm just what i am

    i'm popeye?

  • This is so awesome seeing this classic video, it makes me think of laying on the floor in front of the old console TV on top of my turtle pillow in 1976 when I was 10 and was watching Don Kirshners Rock Conert or the Midnight Special. I remember it was either one of those shoes that introduced me to RUSH and I have been hooked ever since.

  • i'd tonight be carrying on with carrie nutall, if you know what i mean. i remember mr big when they were lol supposed to open for matt broaderdick

  • i love rush

  • GREAT tune! Grew up with this band since hearing Farewell to Kings back in '78. Next Thursday I'll be in the crowd here in Vancouver to see them with my 11 year old son. Hope to hear Geddy do a little of what he does at 2:10 ! ooooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaayeahh!

  • I love Rush

  • I love rush

  • I LOVE RUSH

  • either Geddy was getting really jazzy in the middle of the guitar solo (which is very possible) or he was one fret off in parts. BUT, it doesn't matter, cause this is WAY cooler than watching them mime to the studio version.

  • HOLY SHIT!! What a rare gem.

  • i loved rush like this back when they were hungry the fly by night album is a wonderfull piece of work as is caress of steel its sad that so few people know of these older rush albums

  • RARE AND EXCELLENT!!

  • Yeah, that is the BEST!Again, where did You get this?

  • I'ts on the R30 DVD disc 2.

  • Nevermind, they ommitted this track.

  • wow! where did you get this dude?

  • you can tel me that i got no class/ ha, a future that's rock
