  • Hi Rebecca you are a good teacher for me now these days i can speak and understand american english plz help me to wirght english correctely.

  • As a native English speaker watching this is kind of surreal, the effort other people have to put into sounding like Americans is kind of hilarious but I'm glad they are that dedicated to being able to be understood.

  • Tv show Fringe, admire Agent Olivia Dunham wen she says "Tank you" is that american accent?

  • thumps up if siri bought you here...

  • No it's not British English and American English there both the same and it originates from England not America that's why it's called ENGLish as in ENGLAND Not AMERish

  • funny your surname is quite close to the word linguist...

  • Yes, do help the Indians lose their accent. It is the hardest accent to understand...

  • @rebeccalinquist I stumbled upon your videos and wanted to put in my two cents. I am an Indian whose been in the US for the last 4 years, apart from being somewhat influenced by British sports commentary. And hence I have this accent that is a blend between Indian, American and British. One of the characteristics of Indian speakers that I see always is the way that we pronounce p, t and other such phonetics. They pronounce those letters with little to NO exhale of air, so it sounds different.

  • I can't believe the hate being shown to Indian people here. They are not the ones 'TAKING' the jobs as a few of you put it. American companies are the one who choose to outsource jobs. To Indians, it is just another job and hence a source of income. If you are indeed bothered by outsourcing, stop buying from companies which outsource jobs. But no, you want your goods to be cheap as well. Hypocrisy written all over it. This lady is doing a fine job.

  • @TejasM14 Its born out of the frustration that they cant so without us..:)

  • wow this is really useful

  • Thumbs up for V V and Whoah whoah at 4:06

  • do you training for terrorist i need good speaking for next job

  • @gauravzerogravity I'll learn yours ... which Indian accent do you have and what's your method for teaching it to someone?

  • This video can be very helpful for people trying to speak with an american accent. But, why would they want to imitate an accent instead of being proud of their own one. Has it ever occurred to you that sometimes people who have Indian accents find it hard to understand people who have an american one?

  • @rvaidya98 Ask them ...

  • @ChrisCreamUK, perhaps the Brittish one is not so understandable to foreigners, as the American pronunciation is =)

  • why the fuck would anyone want to pollute the English language by speaking it with an American accent?!!! Clearly the most annoying accent in the world!

  • Thanks for pointing out the the non clear words that we speak & rising-falling accent speeds. I will definitely work on it as per your exercises.

  • Well, do u also teach American Slangs.......?

  • Comment removed

  • New generation here doesn't face that much issue as in there accents aren't Indianized much. In fact, due to using English overtly in our daily lives, we are seeing English accent in our regional languages!

There is however a mixture of British English taught in school & American influence coming from TV & Hollywood.

  • this is gay

  • talk slowly not talk slow

  • What ? what ? Say that again please. I am sorry, I don't understand you if this happens to you, start hiring tutor...

  • Hi Rebecca. I am an Indian student in US. Its been 4 months for me here. Exactly th things that you pointed out were pointed out by my American friends here. Many find it hard understanding me sometimes and some goes for me with some Americans. I would like to learn the American accent so that the communication becomes easy for both me and my American friends but I don't have the money to hire a linguist. Can you please tell me how I can I learn on my own?

  • @akshatagrawal19 We have self study packages on our website - just go ot the English by the Hour site and select "self study" - I can't paste links to this thread ... alternatively, feel free to email me directly - rebecca@englishbythehourDOTcom

  • oh my God this is so funny!!

  • @staceyjudith How the hell is this funny you fucking douche??!! She's teaching people from India how to speak American so they can take our jobs!!!

  • @Furkin44 i'm FROM india and we DON'T speak this way!! infact, 90% of our schools are british english medium schools in which we speak in guess what? ENGLISH!! yes!! and btw, i wasn't making fun of what she's doing (which is her job and it's obviously helps people) but i was just saying that it's funny... unintentionally, but still funny!! i mean the duh-velll-up-ment part isn't funny to hear?

  • @Furkin44 besides, noone "takes" anyone's job!! they just go work just like anyone else because guess what? the job's are given HERE! so go be angry with who you have to be, quit hating on normal ppl who try to make their living by having jobs like everyone else.

  • @Furkin44 just so you know, the job's coming here from there only do because the ppl who give them save a lot of money thru outsourcing, that is, they're selfish ppl who think only about (surprise) themselves! so they don't care that americans or indians get the job, they just care that it's done without all the hassle of taxes and high investments and stuff!!

  • @rebeccalinquist....what's your analysis of beatboxing i.e. daichi - youtube him

  • Thumbs up for v v and woo woo at 4:05 LOL!

  • @twn78705 OMG i noticed this part... lmao... cracked me up!!!!! rofl

  • This is useless. I'm sure you know by now that everyone loves the Indian accent bcoz its funny & hate the American accent bcoz its too common. Besides its always better to have people with diverse cultures rather than having a bunch of immigrants who go to a country & be everything like the locals. I hate looking at Asians & Indians who sound & act like Whites.

  • @giriisindahouse Don't look then.

  • @rottenpancakes well I wan't to. Does that give you a pain in your ass?

  • hey thanks a bunch! :D

  • So you want to be a call center agent? watch?v=OXT_VlpCmFI Watch that :)

  • hey rebecca i like your videos. i needed help in letter "F" its hard to pronounce some words like "first" and lots of other words with letter "F" i will really appreciated.

  • If this is so retarded, how come no one can understand what they are saying when they call costumer service? Just another example of the left wing trying to make reality racism!!

  • @socialistcontainment

How come no one can understand the rednecks. What language you motherfuckers speak

  • @TheEuphony69 You keep playing with that race card retard. Notice how there are no INDIANS complaining on this video, just a bunch of ignorant racist blacks and mexicans.

  • @socialistcontainment

You are a racist.Your profile and your comments on different threads pretty much prove that.

  • @TheEuphony69 Ok, I'm a racist, now move on with having nothing intelligent to say.

  • American accent is boring. Indian accent in the other hand always make people smile. So why change it?

  • the path to DaWelluPMnT!

  • u sexy

  • I lol when you exaggerate ‘duh‘ as if youre having hiccups.

  • this is a good video, although i wouldnt have titled it "american accent" but instead something like "clear speach"

  • @smcc06 Did it ever occur to you that maybe I didn't just "come up with the idea to force my accent on others" but perhaps they approached me and requested it? (DUH!!!)

  • @rebeccalinquist Americans do force their accent and language on others. I lived in France for almost 2 years and it was so irritating to see Americans talking to everybody in English (without even beggining the conversation with "Do you speak English?") when they were in France, but it was funny though when they wanted to do something and they felt totally powerless because they couldn't speak a word of French!!!! Stupid Americans!

  • @smcc06 Tell me, If you went to another country and couldn't speak their language would YOU go around and not say ANYTHING or would you speak your native language. Also please do NOT classify an ENTIRE COUNTRY for ANYTHING because some of them do it. I'm SO sick of people saying something bad about other countries because some of the populace does something that annoys them.

  • @rebeccalinquist

Ma'am, First of all, Thanks for helping peoples,

Second, that smcc06 is a Stupid guy whom you responded 1 month ago.

You are doing a wonderful Job by helping 1.3 Billion American English speaking hungers, Thank you so much for that. I was an Airline pilot in the U.S.A. and had worked for the Delta Airlines for about 4 years, however, I was good enough in english though, i didn't had to make any extra learning because the environment did it for me. :-)

    God bless.

  • Hey, thanks for the video.

    This video is awesome.

  • @smcc06 sir your a douche.In the american accent I say to you"fuck off".

  • @smcc06 Dude chill I'm brazzilian to and this is great because im good at english but horrible at the accent

  • @smcc06; i appreciate her because she is helping we Indian coz she is sharing her wisdom i appreciate her so should you?...think abt it...

  • having an indian accent is much more rich and better than having a redneck accent imo.

  • India please stop answering my calls, i literally wanna kill myself

  • @MrSuperFly86 india??

  • -you-are-a-retard-:)

  • Damn! lolll!!!!! Many Americans will get VERY irritated when talking with someone over the phone in the customer service dept who has a veay Indian accent!

  • @MissTia777 and y is dat soo, is it dat u people have a plan to impose ur own accent on every single person in united states of a, i like my own indian accent, just teach ur accents to d minority immigrants in ur country!! d indian accent which u listen to is basically d south indian accent\!!

  • @MrJefe29 Reality Check! YOU ARE IN AMERICA! You NEED an American accent! Most people can't not understand your heavy babble so don't try to come to a new country and try to force your accent on others! What American who has a problem with a bill and speak to customer service wants to speak with someone with a heavy accent? Can't understand a word you say! Then you Indians are so hypocritical comeing to America and have the nerve to be critical over native accents!

  • @MissTia777 oo my god who gave u d right to call others immigrants , when each and every person in america is an immigrants majority being africans, europians!! listen i am also talking abt dat minority which comes frm indian population go and teach them ur soo called accents!! if u can't understand dats ur problem ,americans can't understand british accents, u can't understand aussie accent, whatd hell ,where r u going u people r soo sensitive wid slow brains, u can't understand english!!!

  • @MissTia777 and one more thing only people from south india have those kind of accents which u call indian accent, india's got soo many languages u can't group our accents into one accent!

  • Sexy Teacher =D

  • the video is fabulous

  • Ahhh! How is the sound when you take the tool in your mouth?

  • I'm working for the hotel... i just hate indian guests who speak with their 'hard' english but will give us a lot of annoyed complaints... They are the worst nation I've ever met... uncivilized....

  • uuuuu rrrrrr aaa RETARD!!!!!

  • This was really helpful. Thanks.

  • Can anyone translate what she is talking about please? Not sure I've heard this language being spoken before.

  • One does not talk slow (as you said in the beginning). The adverb is needed here, not the adjective. Therefore, one talks slowly. Right?

  • I Lik the way u mak sounds,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

  • she is speaking just to show her excellence.how a foreign language student can understand such a fast speaking rate? for me its very frustating.making english more complicated for me

  • im sorry but american dont talk like they have a stick in their ass

  • This is ridiculous... I didn't follow any of it, I was just curious to what she would say.

  • what the hell is this? i was born in america, english is my first language and i also speak gujarati fluently. i have no trouble speaking english and this lady is making no sense. i just came here because it was on the side of the russell peters video

  • A Great Video Rebecca, I am a Indian wanted to learn more of Accent speaking could you please upload more videos.

  • lmao..

  • are you single? * in an american accent* lol

  • I think this video is un-neccisary. I'm all American, and when talking to someone from a different herritage, I enjoy hearing different accents.

  • @planesareawsome its so very obvious you are all American :) You made two mistakes in one sentence. you misspelt unnecessary * (1st mistake) and heritage (2nd mistake) and i am Indian / Pakistani....he he he

  • @korikrali is it "misspellt" or "misspelled" ... or does it even matter?

  • @rebeccalinquist both are correct Rebecca

  • Kiss your W's and bite your V's thats what i learnt . But i got the same training as you are giving :) .. Cheers

  • and all those years I thought getting the job done is what Americans look for, instead of all this non-sense! I don't think they have any hearing impairments or they are so ignorant that they'd prefer blabbering over a clear & direct statement.

brothers/sisters grow up..actions speak louder then words...

  • i can speak well in any accent even without doing all this. you just have to grow up listening to BBC or watch english movies n films ;))

  • Hello! I am Indian, I feel this way is too difficult, I love american accent but I feel it's difficult, can u plz tell any easy way please.

  • @Honey25267 Then take some personal coaching sessions with us!

(visit our website "Englishbythehour" dot com)

  • I am an Indian, I feel like this way is too difficult in which u r telling

  • Lame!

  • You don't speak "fast", you speak quickly. Adverbs are your friend.

  • lol i cant stop laughing after she starting talkin about development and fish.. vvvvv....wtf lol

  • lol wtf

  • Another important thing for Indians to know, besides American sounds - when you're talking among yourselves, you rock your heads side to side. To us, that doesn't look respectful, it just looks silly. So you need to learn our mannerisms, as well as our pronunciation. Of course, when we go to your country, we should learn your ways, too.

  • @impCaesarAvg The purpose of all communication is to enable the exchange of information. While it is very important to make oneselves understood, accents and mannerisms are not uncommon. Even French people shrug their shoulders, turn down their lips and make all sorts of hand gestures while speaking.

  • what about accents for native americans?

  • she really punctured the language names lol

  • one thing u forgot, the way americans pronounce cant (indian: CA/UN/T american: K/A/N/T) but i guess that is kinda obvious `~`

  • i know i should not have to watch this as i was born in and spent all my life in North America (I have not been out of NA as far as i remember) and am 13. But i still have this stupid accent :(

  • wow .. you are really helpful thanx

  • HEY R U SINGLE? I WANT U TO TEACH ME SOME ENGLISH...THE ORAL AMERICAN WAY :D

  • I hate telemarketers in general but I find it to be in poor taste that they try to learn our accent to trick us because they know a lot of people don't want to deal with or do business with companies that outsource prospective American jobs.

  • @LaughingOTI80 It's one of those controversial issues. Are they trying to trick someone or just trying to be understood? Many people in call centers aren't selling anything; they are answering questions and providing support. Many companies are outsourcing, so it may just be part of the global economy, like it or not!

  • @rebeccalinquist Let me define what I mean when I say "they" because obviously I don't blame anyone for wanting to work. I think it's corporate america or whatever powers that be that see outsourcing as a half percent increase in their profits that are to blame for the shambles our economy is in.

  • @LaughingOTI80 And some estimates say organizations can save 26% or more on outsourcing and also on automation - the internet alone with no humans involved at all is doing many of the job retailers used to do. I ordered online today and was offered free gift and shipping for products that are available at the store, so you can see where it's headed. Most of my clients live in the US and just want to speak clearly at work.

  • american english is different for most speakers of other languages and difficult to imitate unless they live around native speakers for a while. i love languages and have developed this neutral accent when i speak other languages, that uses some of the hints she gives, and combine aspects of several languages , so people have accused me of being everything from french to russian, but they understand me. im sure that understanding means more to people than your having their accent.

  • @nomadnametab Everyone has an accent - it sounds like you've modified yours in a way that works for you!

  • Hi, Thanks for your comments. I've noticed that there are quite a few different American accents of speaking English like those that Italian Americans speak, or the African American lingo or the accent from the Southern states that's spoken with a drawl, or the Latin American accent.

How do you manage to reconcile with these accents? I guess it is difficult to completely wipe out the linguistic traits of ones own native language. And why does only the Indian Accent have to be corrected?

  • @zkas19 First, I don't think the Indian accent has to be "corrected" - I think many people in India want to get jobs selling products and services to Americans, and they are choosing to speak in an American accent in order to be more successful in their careers. Second, many others learn the American Accent too, often because they live here and want to speak well in their jobs to get promotions and compete against others for key positions.

  • @rebeccalinquist Also, there are many regional dialects in the US. It's always a good idea to know your intent before embarking on an accent or dialect modification program - do you want a job in a play where you have to sound like you are from Kentucky? Are you moving to NY? Do you live in CA and want a promotion? Do you want to speak so everyone understands you regardless of where they live? Once your goals are clear, you will know which accent/dialect you need to acquire.
