Nice that thing started right up! Great cold start!
Is this one the 205hp pr the 230hp Version?
I was looking at a GMC 7000 dump truck with an 8.2 with 40k miles that I could probably get for really cheap, but I did some research and a lot of people say the 8.2 is WAY underpowered.
This truck has the 230 horsepower version. It has a pretty good bit of power, you just have to know how to drive it and know where the sweet spots are. It's comparable to a 3208 or DT466 of that vintage. Naturally aspirated 8.2's are horrible though and behave much like tractors.
They are very high revving engines, and they run the best when you keep them wound up (like the two strokes). They are not good for lugging and will fall apart if they are lugged.
i wonder how hard it would be to put one in my 1980 C20 its either that or a 6.2L the 6.2 will bolt right up to my tranny this one would probbably need a clark or something right? i love how the clarks sound the ones with the straight cut gears are my favorite
sm465 doesent classify as a heavy truck tranny does it? ive seen them in c60s before my truck has one also that thing beggs for another gear but its not to bad on gas
and it had an 8.2 detroit turbo in it...right up in the front next to the headlight was a little plug integrated right into the body and if you plugged it in it would like damn near BOIL the coolant, the radiator and everything got hot,
damn i wish i had my truck that looked like that back

I cant believe in the early 80s these monster diesels were put in the pick ups!!!
Motorfordtoyota 1 year ago
@Motorfordtoyota They never did put these in pickups. You are thinking about the 6.2 and 6.5 diesels.

@Blue10AEMia Oh, I read in some Chevy history books that they were a rare option in the 3/4 and 1 tons.

Thats cool...its a diesel but the exhaust sounds like a gasoline engine. Is this a V8 detroit?

@jpgbrookes Yes it's a V-8, 500 cubic inches

why is it surging likt that? is it a oil pressure controlled fuel governer or somethin' i dont know what it is
teletubbykiller23 1 year ago
Most diesels with mechanical fuel injection will lope or surge when they are cold.

I am thinking about buying one of these engines. How much would you assume a easily repairable one costs with a few hundred thousand on it?

These engines have a SAE 2 bellhousing, so you will need a heavy truck transmission.
The 6.2 and 6.5 will fit in your truck.
