  • u got something in 4 taal

  • I am unfamiliar with "4 taal".

  • these really are the best tutorials on the net at the moment. just shows everything - excellent - thank you

  • He is an amazing Tabla player.

  • pradip bhai sahb, i am very very grateful to you for these lessons.

    God bless you!

  • oh ok. well your guruji is sick at the tabla man. its must be great to learn from someone so skilled. good luck in your learning and I will keep a lookout for more videos. thanks for your reply.

  • thanks for the advice man. I have a question though. when you mean increase the pressure of the bols you still have to stay relaxed right? by the way, your tabla sounds great. did you get it from your guruji? also, you should post a video with you improvising on bhajan kherwa. seeing ther rest of your videos, I bet you got a sick kherwa taal. thanks.

  • : )

Just to clear up any confusion, my name is Josh, and this is my youtube account, and I filmed those videos of my Guruji Pradip Ghosh playing tabla, so it is not me or my tabla that you are hearing. My camera is pretty good though I must say... lol. It is a Benarsi camera. (not really, its a kodak)

My understanding (from my Gurujis) is that in performance one must be relaxed, but to say that one is relaxed in riyaz might be misleading... for example, he won't even show me how to practice

  • properly using his concert tabla, because it would BREAK under the pressure! He says he uses special heavy duty practice tabla only for practicing, and his concert tabla are very durable, so I can only imagine! (By the way, he plays Vatkar tabla, same as his Guruji Pt. Kumar Bose and many others)

To say that one should play relaxed during riyaz might give the wrong impression, u should always strive to be relaxed and breathe and loosen up, but at the same time according to Pradipji

  • at the end of a Riyaz session you should be out of breath and covered in sweat! It's Benaras Gharana! a much different school of thinking than the Dehli gharana for example, where the bols are executed more delicately. So it does depend on the school of thought that you subscribe to, to some extent. But most players I've heard say practice harder and louder than you play in concert, to build strength.

And YES, Pradipji's Keherwa Taal is AMAZING!!!! I keep asking him, so hopefully soon!!!

  • you're really good. can you give me some advice on how to practice tirakita. your tirakita is really clean.

  • Namaste! This is Josh, student of Pradip Ghosh ji. Pradipji's bols are very clear, even at tremendously high speeds. I can pass along some advice. #1, if ur practicing and something is not clear, ur practicing too fast. if u practice fast, clarity will not come, but IF U PRACTICE ALWAYS WITH CLARITY, THE SPEED WILL COME NATURALLY! use lots of pressure during riyaz to strengthen the hand. ALWAYS REDUCE SPEED until the composition can be played with perfect clarity, only then increase speed.

  • #2: PLACEMENT, proper and precise placement of each bol is absolutely crucial, and should be exactly the same each time the bol is played. This can only be taught by a Guruji.

#3: EMPHASIS: for bols like tirakita and tirakitataka, make sure there is emphasis on the correct bols, they should all be clear but not necessarily even. Also, if one bol always tends to get slurred, like the last ta of tirakita, ACCENT THAT BOL DURING RIYAZ!! Make it the loudest one, until its as clear as the others.
