Catholic boy is a great album, still have it on vinyl. used to play this song every new years eve party to tribute all the people we knew or didn't personally know who died that year, cranked it and everyone sang the lyrics. Awesome times!
@blondieesss The first time you see Elliot's house, you can hear it fade in and it's playing in the kitchen when they're playing Dungeons and Dragons.
This song was also played briefly in the obscure 1985 film "Tuff Turf" in which Jim Carroll had a cameo (he played the song "It's Too Late" in some kind of underground club).
Jim Carrol's music n writings always hit home w/ me. I too have had a hard life n am an ex heroin addict n have lost MANY friends. RIP Jim u r missed!!
Loved this song, even before they used it on 'E.T.' - remember when they're eating dinner before the kid sees the little guy. I would like to say that I'm glad I was never Jim Carroll's buddy - they didn't seem to fair too well.
I liked the Diaries film. Good performances by the actors and a realistic reflection of the mean streets but while I was impressed by the dark entertainment value I would have liked a glimpse into the structures of the heart that grips us so hard we become addicted, unaware we are designing our own destruction. I'm grateful that Jim Carroll left us this powerful message before going on to his next gig.
I just watched "Basketball Diaries" & all I wanna say is: don't fuck up your life cause you only got on chance, one life to live! You can live normally ,even successfully but you can also live and feel like your already died. Please choose the first one! R.I.P. Jim, thanks for your strength&talent!
95 people a minute die, you do the math, this world ends for you when you take your last breath, then eternity starts either in Heaven or hell. Choose Christ while you have breath. One month later you will not even be a memory in most people's mind. Life goes on with or without you, you are a vapor of mist in time hear on earth, born for eternity.
Love all jim carrolls work,, although the movie portrayed his book and they got jims blessing to do it,, they are real different from each other. I love both. I like the book better though because whenever im high or feel like it you can open the book and start reading anywhere and enjoy it . You dont have to read it from start to finish,,, although ive done so a few times,,, i looove to just randomly open it and start reading from that passage.. I really want to read downtown diaries,
I loved this track. Remember buying back in what...81' or something and then a year or so later where do I hear it. E bloody T. I wonder who knew who to get that record into the film, and I wonder if it's on the soundtrack. Hang on, let me look on Amazon...........Aha, Nope it isn't. Should be though. Ah well all in all I'm glad to say I was never a friend of Jim Carroll. Doesn't seem to have done anyone any good being his buddy!
@robojony91 In the movie "Basketball Diaries", Leonardo Dicaprio plays the role of Jim Carroll, a young teenager who gets addicted to drugs and his life crumbles around him, but in the end he finds a way out through his writing. Jim Carroll wrote "the Basketball Diaries" as an autobiography, but in addition to being an author/poet, he was also a musician. The man singing in this video is the real Jim Carroll. It's pretty cool that the man lived to see his autobiography made into a movie. RIP
Carroll was best known for his 1978 autobiographical work The Basketball Diaries, which was made into the 1995 film of the same name, starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Carroll. Really powerfull movie...
In there early to mid70s punk erupted in NY city in a club called CBGB's. Bands like The Ramones with their heavy guitar driven sound would later on influence British Punk super stars like the Sex Pistols turning the focus of the movement over seas. But there was a lighter side to early punk in Bands like Blondie and Richard Hell & the Voidoids. New wave is a term that was used by the press later on to describe the lighter side of this movement in music. this is sits some where in between. Imho
I was in rehab when he died, so I thought he was still alive until last thursday, when I found out he died I said "God Dammit! All of my favorite poets are dead now."
Jim Carroll is attracting good teenagers into being corrupt like him. I have him on tape masterbating to the show "LazyTown" on Nick Jr when Stephanie and Robbie Rotten have a scene together. I traded the tape to God for the right to visit Hell and use the con-man Jim Carrol as a punching bag. Quick Negros easily keep him from scoring by attacking the rim. they TAKE THE BALL from him.
@MexicanShiznit510 First you have to read his book AND DOUBT HE IS COMPLETELY TELLING THE TRUTH. He came to Real de Catorce several years ago to take peyote and decided to stay. "I do believe there will be several problems with conserving peyote if we don't act," Medellin says of Carrol's intent to stay "un-alive" there.
Lost my best pal last year, he loved this song, suicides fucked up! And Jim know youre up there smiling prolly hanging out with my pal, shoot some of that heavanly with him, and we'll all be down here blasting your favs....Cricket (70-09) rip homey!
