Her body was discovered September 18th 1932 in a ravine below. The other reason they don't allow people too close is because of vandalism.

To reply to my own comment... The road is gated, _quadruple_ locked, and a fine is set and posted. Facts not so revealed on this geek's GPS. Still there is a bit of Speilberg's Devils Tower scramble sequence from Close Encounters up there. Ugly.

You can walk up there just fine. It's pretty easy to get to it actually. The trail up is 1.3 miles and is paved. It leads to above and behind it. There are cameras on each letter and tall fences blocking from the trail down to the letters. Some lady killed herself from it so thats why the cameras are there. And to stop vandals. But, It's actually pretty simple to get all the way up there...
