Ever heard of mma or kenpo gloves? They would make face punching possible. In my opinion I think the japanese don't want face punching because they would lose control of karate. It would not look too good for japan if the gaijins took over thier own sport. Just look at mma and kickboxing. Japanese get the shit kicked out of them left and right.
but if u look at other styles of karate , u will find punches to the face too , and , kyokushin used to allow punches to the face but was banned after the major injuries and permanent ones which happened , its not about the japanese its about styles , u dont like it , dont do it.
The thin gloves we used today did not exist back then (the thin gloves back then were crap). It was basically a choice of bareknuckle or heavy clumsy boxing gloves.
Kyokushin opted for bareknuckle and the limitations it placed for safe competitions.
Today some kyokushin organisations fight with headpunches and mma type gloves. But the old rules are still as they were created in the beginning of the 70ies.

it used to be like that , no gloves and punches to the face, and the rules were changed to ban punches to the face , so clearly , this way is better.
