Yes. They are Norths. He was probably the first to incorporate them ever. 1976 on the solos tour. He is pretty short (like most drummers, no biggie,) but he plays on an 18" Bass Drum.
And on GFTO tour, those were "The Blow Years" so must of the material is quite fast.
Alan lives near here... have met him a few times in past 2 years. Look at my videos... type in Synergia Benefit.
And did you know he was John Lennon's drummer for MOST of his solo stuff !
"Instant Karma", "Imagine", "Happy Christmas (War Is Over)", etc !!!
He's a great guy... just sittin' talking with him... about every 10 seconds it kept hitting me "That's freakin' Alan White !!!!"..... BUT.... "stars" really are just regular dudes and dudettes. Even argued with him. Too funny.
I saw this show two times. First in Louisville Ky. and later in Memphis Tenn. Man it takes me back. I was 16 and have been a Yes fan ever since. All total have seen them live 15 times but this was the best concert I have ever been to.
This is an awesome version of this tune! I love that Howe's slide guitar is huge in the mix. It pisses me off when it's too low on AYAI like on some of their other live concert DVDs.
The tempo seems so fast! Guess I've been watching too many of their more recent videos when they're really old.
Great video, thank you!! I can't help but notice how high Alan sits on top of the drum kit, in later years it seems as though the kit has gotten taller or he is sitting lower. He was such a great speed drummer back in the day.
Yeah, all the old videos show him VERY high. Part of it was that he's used a 20" bass drum forever, so his toms, which were old standard depths, were lower; & his drum heroes were guys like Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa, who also sat high compared to their kits. Another thought: In the 60's/70's, for the most part, drum hardware hadn't advanced a great deal, so drummers were somewhat limited in setup possibilities. 90125 & beyond he started using power depths & had better hardware & electronics.

Holy cow! Is Alan White playing a set of North drums? The drums at one angle near the end look horn shaped much like the North sets

Very interesting, I can't help but think that all that "power" and "better" stuff took away from his speed which made him so raw and unique.

Well, some of it might also have to do with getting older, and playing a little more streamlined to fit the material that the band grew into.
