  • Greg did lol lack luster...

  • I love how the drummer picks up his ride and just kinda holds onto it even after the song is over. "My cymbal!"

  • what kind of amp is Greg using? I cant find out anywhere

  • @bwhitakersmith

    Trillium-Empyrean $200,000 on ebay!

  • what a effn awesome voice. everyone kick*ss . darren the monster!!!

  • Does anyone know what ride Darren is using? I can see the K logo on it.

  • Oh yesss!!! Once again showing their classy originality!!! Anyone know what this song is about?

  • murphys law

  • Incubus meets TV on the Radio meets The Police. I fucking love it.

  • Ever since Dave said something about Darren the camera is all over him!!!

    YES!!! *takes notes*

  • lol drummer looks like will arnett

  • its a gob, guy.

  • Darren King is a beast.

  • He went to my High School! :)

It's pretty crazy that we both do/did theatre for the same director!

  • BRAVISSIMI, una vera sorpresa, credo avranno successo anche in Italia, io vado a comprarmi il disco stamattina

  • I love this song!!! The guitar effect is NOT supposed to be in tune - I liked the warped sound. It adds tension to the lyrics, which I find very fitting. Fits with the sarcasm - "I bet it's gonna backfire again ". I get tired of the same "top 40" stuff, so I can appreciate something different. Thanks, guys - I loved it.

  • very true...well said

  • That'll stick to your brain for a while..

  • Seeing them in Cincinnati, Ohio in September. Can't wait!

  • Mute Math....making the Keytar cool & relevant, once again...this stuff kicks buttocks!!

  • Hell yeah! This is the first i've heard of their new stuff and i really like. Didn't know all of them could sing, they should have used more harmonies on their first album. They not afraid to experiment either. awesome, im happy :)

  • wow increible!!!! mute math ustedes son lo maximo! Dios los bendiga!

  • Probably just a chorus pedal with the depth set really high and the speed very low

  • I'm pretty sure it's a vibrato delay, but not 100%. I have an Electro Harmonix Memory Man and the vibrato option sounds a lot like the one in Backfire.

  • My guess is that the effect is possibly some sort of input controlled whammy effect (like an input sensitive auto-wah, but the input signal controlling the whammy effect in this case)

  • what is that cool amp on stage right?

  • freaking awesome!

  • When I first heard Backfire on the album, I immediately noticed the out of tune guitar riff, explodyhead YOU go listen again.

  • they sound alot like radiohead with their own unique twist making them awesome :D

  • the drummer is awesome

  • best drummer everrrrr

  • Darren King graduated from my High School!

  • whoa nice new keytar!..upgrade =)

  • I love this song! The guitar is supposed to sound like that - trust me. It makes the song unique, which is what will distinguish it from other songs that you may hear pop up on the radio.

    I hope it gets airplay!

  • Dude... Darren King plays with loads of precision... lots of ghost notes... argh... its tasty...

  • ya. i love how jangly that guitar sounds.

  • Its awsome ... i mean when i heard the song at first i said FAIL but then the guitar started playing I WAS LIKE :O

    Effing cool guitar sound

  • after some googling, it appears that the amp is made by some custom outfit called Trillium Amplifiers. Amazing looking stuff, and if this vid tells the truth, they sound pretty frickin amazing. I'm saving up for one already. I won't be surprised to see them start popping up all over.

  • Thanks for the love! The amplifier is called The Empyrean, and the "out-of-tune" sound you hear is a special kind of delay that smears the tuning to give the guitar a funky sound.

  • almost sounds like greg's guitar is a little off tune, but THAT WAS AWESOME.

  • thats just an effect. a professional musician wouldn't have an out of tune guitar anyways. they kind of get that big by having good ears.

  • well, usually, a professional has their roady tune it.

It just seems like one string is a little off.

  • Listen - it's a vibrato delay he's using. Supposed to give that out of tune sound.

  • I know what it is. Vibrato doesn't make something sound out of tune.

Listen to it, and listen to the album version.

  • Vibrato delay doesn't give that kind of wonky sound on single note? Man, you're fucking high! There is no WAY they would have went out there with an out of tune guitar. They're too professional.

  • Aren't there autotune devices so everybody can be perfectly in tune?Would that make the world a better place?

  • The world would be a terrible place! If everyone sounded perfect, the the people who were actually good wouldnt get the respect they deserve.

  • it was amazing.

great sound. great performance. nothing wrong with it

  • anyone know what kind of amp that is? it looks almost custom or something. I looked the their website, but couldn't find any info. I think i want one.

  • It's prolly a classic tube amp.

  • I don't know what's better--the performance, or the simply amazing amp in the back.

  • I love how both times they've been on the show, Letterman has expressed how much he likes their music.

  • YES!!!!

  • love what darren does with his ride at the end

  • Great upload. Tnx for the link.

  • Great Link. Tnx.

  • Great Link. Tnx.

  • Wow, it sounds even better than on the album! Mr. Letterman said it right: 'Great job, gentlemen!'
