Based on the variety of comments, we are all in the same boat. We have had arthroscopic meniscus surgery. I had a bucket handle that was getting into the joint. It was not consistent pain until a couple months ago. Then it HURT!!. 50 years old. I walk'd without crutches in 1 day and was on the stationary bike in 3 days. I can walk without pain. It's getting back to running and windsurfing that will take time. The key is sticking to that PT. Get to the gym and push it. God bless
how are you doing now...I am facing torn meniscus surgery the day before Thanksgiving 2011 and I am wondering if I will feel up to going out Thanksgiving day? What are your thoughts based on your experience? Also How long before you could climb a flight of stairs?
Thanks, Hope you are recovering well!!! Happy Thanksgiving!!!
Have had pain for the last 3 year stupid doctors didn't know what I had until 2 weeks ago I had an MRI done the black man said it was ripped alittle so it hurts under my knee cap .. :))
I had this surgery done about a month ago and i am still not allowed to run, bike, walk on uneven ground such as hiking trails, or do anything that involves extreme use of the knee.... How long was it before you could be fully active again?
i had that surgery wish i never did now anytime im on my feet now i start limping it throbbs and ackes 24 7 wish i never had it, walkin on concrete makes it worse i limp faster anybody else havin that problem?> im 5/11 215 rite now tryn to get my weight down hopn that will help
@countyguy2003 You definitely need to shed some weight. I'm 5.11 and was always 175-180 max. Now I'm 185 and feel like i'm overweight. It's not a question of good looks, it's a question of health. You need to lose some weight to give your knee some break! Good luck!
I just had my surgery a week and 2 days ago. Knee feels good, but it's still noticeable that it's not 100%. I noticed that you have the 3 incisions on your knee. My surgeon only used 2. Found it interesting, even though the video is from 2007.
How much does it cost for surgery if one's not insured? Looking to get my left knee (meniscus) worked on for the second time, but this time -- no insurance.
I just got my menisectomy 3 days ago and I am still mostly couch ridden. It hurts quite a bit if I forget my meds and it gets really itchy (cuz I'm not allowed to take off the bandages yet). They removed a floating piece from mine and then repaired the rest so they said it will take 2-3 months to heal for me (probably).
it looks really sore! im 15 and im getting it done in july :( i had a knee operation before, they had to put metal nails in my knee cap, but they are causing pain and the doctor said that im going to have a camera surgery :( im a bit scared please will you tell me what is it like? does it hurt? how long you wont be able to walk for? thanks
You have to wear an immobilizer. I had a lateral release and medial....whatever it's called in November 2010. It's been several months, and I'm still having trouble taking stairs and sitting on my knees. No feeling in some areas (I hope that's not a bad thing).
i had that surgery done at the end of january i just finished thearapy last week im still having sum popn limpn sum and sweeling its full of arthritist and ackes like hell nebody got neideas? plus its been affecting my back when i start limping
hi guys i had a surgery on my left knee. meniscus tear.......anyhow 2 days after the surgery my foot got red and swollen and went to the hospital and they said i have tissue infection and admitted me in the hospital for 3 days...bec antibiotics orally r not that effective.........tissue infection can spread through urole wh body if not medically treated right away.........and i cAnt walk yet maybe its bec the infection.....if u have any questions add me on facebook ishaaqhasan@ymail.com
I had this done 10 days ago and it's still swollen but not near as much as it was the first 5 days. I though they would only do one or two incisions so I was surprised when I noticed the three incisions like you had as well.
had this surgery 5 days ago, havent taken a painkiller in 2 days and can already extend leg completely . point being recovery and pain differs for everyone!
I had this surgery done but I've been having swelling and pain still 3 weeks post op. Could I have retorn it? And how long was it before you could extend your leg fully outwards?
I could hardly walk the first days after the op so I didn't do any exercices either. I also took some pain meds and heard you shouldn't exercise while taking them, you need to listen to what your knee tells you. I'm now attending a physiotherapy group twice a week at my local hospital but it's mainly for the ACL so I guess the exercises would be different. If you're in doubt I think it's best to see a physiotherapist to give you some advice
I had arthroscopy and partial meniscectomy cause i had a bucket handle tear in my lateral meniscus in my left knee which had locked my knee and a complex tear to my medial meniscus. I had this op 2 days ago now, the swelling hasn't gone down at all yet and the pain is just constant. I haven't been able to do the exercises because of the pain. Can anyone give me an idea of how long until I'll be able to start moving it better or any other info on what i can do? cheers
Don't worry and don't force anything if you're in pain, I had the same surgery (bucket handle tear in lateral meniscus, partial menisectomy) 1 month ago and it took almost 10 days till I could fully stretch the leg because of the swelling. Still cannot bend it fully. Today I walked at least 2 hours and last week I took up swimming again. No running or jumping yet but I can see the progress (also have to deal with an ACL tear though). Training bike seems to work good for me
@Foolanna Cheers for the info, whats the best exercises to do after the op? or did you rest for a few days after? cause i have quite a bit of pain and like you say i cant fully straighten or bend my leg that much at all atm. Is it best to try and get it moving or just to rest
@TheGlueFace the first 3 day the doc told me stay in bed no move at all only if i had go to the bathroom ,i got it done on thursday and i was back to work the next monday and i walk around alot, it hurt but everyday after 4 days u start feeling much better tomorrow is my follow up app, thanks for asking..
@xoRachelandhearts actually it does. But it doesn't compare to my ACL surgery. Pain was brutal. I'd deliver a baby if not for painkillers. After meniscus surgery it's not post op pain that you should worry about, but proper recovery afterwards.
Dudedont worry, it wont hurt at all, itl be like the doctor telling to inhale something u do, next thingu know u r in the recovery room and ur leg is wrapped up, i was just like u scared alot.
you are going to be on crutches nearly for 2 days or 3 i walked the second day but it was a liiiiiitle hard, you should get some Physical therapy though, anyhow dont worry 1 week ur walking 2 weeks ur normal, oh and im 16, how old r u? recovery depends on age :)
Glad to hear that, so nearly a month for ur surgery, keep us informed about what will happen, belive me its all in the brain i was scared alot to even bend it, the doctor told me relax ur legs, it bent it self normally, today i walked for 30 mins and jogged a little bit, mainly u will have to make ur quad's stronger after the surgery. i dont know about other people but i had a problem with my foot it went on the inside for a while, dw abt that its nothing it goes away :P
@xoRachelandhearts do not take asprin or any imflamation inhibitor it will act as a growth repair inhibitor, google asprin delayed healing and pass it on. yes it hurts like a mother fucker.
How come you have 3 incision holes, I only had two? One for the camera, one for the instruments. Would like to tell you I watched the whole procedure as I planned to but it seems like at some point they got nervous and sent me to the land of dwarfs and fairies... so, how are you (walking) now?
@TheGlueFace It has now been almost 2 weeks and still no pain, swelling is almost gone and it feels great. I think I will buy my Doctor a cold Coors Lite.
@TheGlueFace Its going to take a couple weeks until you are getting close to normal. It has been over 2 weeks and I still have a slight limp and slight swelling but it feels good for the most part. Getting the stitches out in 2 days so Doc should let me know how it looks to him.
@Peachcheeks95 YES extremely.........the day of you feel no pain ONLY because your knee is shot up with novacaine or lanacaine. if you didnt do it DONT
had it done 9/13/10 major pain is gone but they do not tell you all the painful things you will experience after the "easy" surgery. I had to have cortisone shots then fluid removed, I would rather have twins at the same time then go through that again.
3 months later still pain and they are telling me when an instrument hits the bone it automatically causes athritis, why the heck didnt anyone share the "perks" before the operation I would have NEVER done this. the pain is worst now RETHINK
i feel you man, i play soccer and i had a surgery for my tear and now after 8 weeks i cant run as normally now.. it really sucks how it didnt seem like a big thing when it started out till i realized i couldnt run or bend my knee at all.....
@whitee95e it takes from 6 to 8 weeks to walk normally. But each case is different and depends on type of surgery (partial or complete meniscectomy or just meniscus repair) and rehab. Do rehab diligently and you'll be fine soon. GL.
4 days ago playn b-ball jumpd n came dwn on my left leg n tried 2 chnge directn wit it @ same time. rite away felt shrp pain in knee n wnt down. pain ws instanteneous. didnt hear pop but ws n still am in pain. coulndnt contnue play. stil cnt extnd leg fuly strait cuz feel heavy pressre n pain in da inside centr of knee very tight n painful evrytime i try. dis is da bigest problm rite now. minor swellin. no strait leg. cnt walk. cnt bear weight for pain. stiff joint hrd to bend. WHAT IS THIS?
@scoobygirlrn03 Well, guess no skiing for you :) Seriously, you don't have to worry much. Let surgeon do his job and do your own (rehab) afterward. You'll be fine. GL!
@Peachcheeks95 yeah, general. This stuff by itself not pleasant, because next day you feel like you've had a gallon of vodka the day before. I'm sorry, but I puked couple times, and felt crappy the whole day. But that's about it. Just do whatever doc tells you to do and you'll be fine. Good luck!
if that was the after effects of arthroscopic surgery for a meniscus repair I would suggest finding a new surgeon. May I ask what country you are from?
guys having a bupa insurance is the best thing i ever done .
i had a arthroscopie surgery went very well i had the best surgeon, and the staff looked very well after me.at cromwell hospital if i have t go back i will do it again .
and how are you feeling now, I had it done 3 months ago too and still cannot walk right USE a stationary bike at least once a day to ease the pain and lessen stiffness
i am having my other knee done thursday 8-26 and i am going back to work next thursday i am hoping that the second knee wont hurt like the one last year at this time i only had 2 key holes which had 2 stiches each
i am having my other knee done thursday 8-26 and i am going back to work next thursday i am hoping that the second knee wont hurt like the one last year at this time
@bboyrocco I did physical therapy with the Athletic Trainier at my high school. I just had another surgery for my meniscus december 15,so thats my second and hopefully last surgery. they removed part of it and then repaired the rest because it was torn all the way through and they removed a bursa that formed. this is my senior year in high school and i cant play soccer. i wont be cleared in time to play. i was also going to play in college but i cant now..it sucks.
@lalehm17 I wouldnt give up just yet... With a lot of care and therapy you can come back stronger... The human body is not that weak... Good luck tho and thanks for your reply... Im doing a lot of stationary biking and squats so I can stretch it I had my surgery the 14th of Jan and it hurts every now and then but its getting better and I cant walk but cant run... I tore my meniscus during a soccer game as well....
@bboyrocco i wont be cleared in time for the season and ive been doing physical therapy, but mine was completely torn, and although my coach knows i cant try out in feb but ill be cleared in marchish he wont let me on the team unless i try out. douche bag.
That not too bad of a scare Back in june of '09 I had arthoscopic. I had a dislocated patella(knee cap) and it was a good few inches out of the socket and that one failed and went back to being dislocated so in january of '10 I had major knee surgery where I have about a five inch scar and they had to break the bone and shave it down and screw it back together. I'm left with the bolt still inside and it causes major pain with weather and i have no feeling on the left side of my leg by the scar
Hi, Doctor I was playing cricket in jan and I heared a popping sound in my knee , I went with the RICE formula and it worked for me . bt then again it popped up in March , I again rested it for 1 week and it was healed , it happened to me now for the third time in May. I have visit the orthopaedic its a meniscus tear ,surgery . I am 25 male in sydney and I wanted to know that what are the post surgery results, my work includes standing and a normal walking ????
ahhh that looks bad. i tore my mcl and that hurt soo bad!!! and tomorrow i have to see a knee specialist. hopefully the process goes by fast. because i got injured the last day of jan and now its about to be june!! and im pretty sure ima have to get surgery. im still limited to movement. i cant put it straight. or when i stand i have to have it bent. it just wont go in!
hey so i might need to get surgery idk yet i have to get my mri first. i play softball and of course you run the bases, does getting this surgery done slow down your speed? are you feeling any pain still?
i had key hole surgery on my medial meniscus, but i also had and ACL reconstruction. So i have had a full knee reconstruction and the funny things about this are that 1. I did this during long jump...i mean seriously LONG JUMP! and 2. I am only 15 years old. i miss being able to run and other stuff it's kinda annoying :(
i just had this surgery done last thursday and i'm healing well. i tore my acl over the summer and along with it tore my meniscus and that was just repaired. then a few weeks ago i tore my meniscus playing basketball so they just removed some this time. only 3 days out and i'm back to walking with no pain. i still limp a bit since it's still swollen. from what i've read meniscus removal heals alot faster. i do powerlifting so i hope i don't have too many problems in the future.
oh man i had the same thing, they had no idea what was wrong until they did this, i had a meniscal tear too, it still hurts alittle but its been a couple months. but my best friend...ice ice ice!
hmmm, had my meniscus scoped out... 50% of medial. Buckethandle. in 2 day, i already did squats. started to train my leg. Walked. Tryed to dance. =) after 1 month, i was bboying again. Sometimes, i can forget that i had surgery, other time it gives a pain. but full healing takes 6-9 moths but with 3 months, i guess u feel like its fine already. Still, knee will have good days, bad days. dont be upset. give it a rest and pet it like u care =)
@riptides15 no men u don't need crutches... after my surgery i can walk straight but what i worried .. my knee is to weak to take a step but i can walk normally... so proper exercise and you'l do good..
@NJSERB dude u can do it.. to tell you the truth i'm playing basketball again like no operation has been done... after my operation.. its my weight which give me a problem coz' i gain really bad.. so i have diet and exercise for me to be restored.. so keep moving men..!!
@NJSERB after the surgery? well actually, after 7 my knee doesn't hurt dat much.. its the stitches dat kills me.. coz it to damn itchy..!! beside that the range of motion and inflammation of the operated knee comes to the scenario.. so u should do cold compress to recover very soon!! approximately 6mos i played hell of a game on our basketball league ^_^v
@NJSERB@NJSERB after the surgery? well actually, after 7 my knee doesn't hurt dat much.. its the stitches dat kills me.. coz it to damn itchy..!! beside that the range of motion and inflammation of the operated knee comes to the scenario.. so u should do cold compress to recover very soon!! u should get ur self a KNEE BRACE it would help u, for ur knee not to click or pop.. approximately 6mos i played hell of a game on our basketball league ^_^v
@riptides15 i think its more about your legs. Im bboy, my legs do massiv mooving, got some strong muscles there and maby cause of it, i didnt need crutches, but im not sure... i guess it depends on person... Surgery is not bad at all and it helps a lot if your knee is locked. but if u can straighten it then try first theraphy cause knee surgerys heal long time. cause of weight and everything u do with your knees.
Just had mines 2 days ago am in pain, took 2 vicodines and nothing, i get very itchy after i took them but i didnt get sleepy or took my pain away, i cant even move my leg cause it hurts, how long it takes for the pain to go away?
I am having this surgery done in a week...it will be my second, if anyone can tell me how the second time is and how painful...it will help. I had it scoped once in college, but I am now a bit older and out of shape...can anyone give me some words of wisdom?
@leonidasfan300 everything goes so fast. u get taken back to the surgical room. they hook you up to a couple machines, shave your knee, hook an iv in you....and then u wake up an hour later in the recovery room. it went so damn fast. i was prescribed vicodin and also over the counter aspirin. in two days i have used only 2 vicodin. i was in the most pain on the second day...maybe 5-6 on a scale of 10. its a more irritating/uncomfortable pain than anything else.
i was just put under today for this. it took about an hour but there are only holes on the sides of my kneecap, only 2 incisions. i had a bucket handle minisuc tear. the procedure took a little over an hour.
Dude, they fucked you up. I had arthroscopic meniscus repair like three weeks ago and the scars are 3 marks the size of tic tacs (or actually smaller). How long did your procedure take?
I tore my menisus a while ago and chose not to have surgery. Now, whenever my knee twists, it has a high chance is popping out of place. I don't know if this is due to damage that I did to it by continuing to play basketball on it, or from the initial injury, but it sucks. I'm limited to forward motion only at this point. If I try to make lateral moves, my knee won't hold up. Just playing hacky sack causes my knee to pop out...I'm dreading giong in to see a doctor. I know I'll need surgery.
Dude, I'm sorry to hear that, but what you do is actually stupid. Go friggin see doctor now! The more you delay the more damage you make to you meniscus and more consequences you'll face when you're old. Plus, from what I read you may have torn ligament as well. Go check yourself and be safe.
I've read up on certain types of knee braces that can be worn in place of getting surgery...it's definitely more cost efficient considering that I don't have health insurance. The question is, how well do these braces work. I've already tried standard hinged knee braces, and they weren't at all effective.
If you don't have insurance - apply for one. If you can't - well, try to eat less, but get money for surgery (around $3-5K). And as far as anesthesia concerns it's up to you, you may tell you doc you want to be "knocked out" - general anesthesia, or to be conscious - local anesthesia. I did general, but man, I felt extremely crappy after it.
I just had my right knee scoped yesterday morning and I stopped using my crutches this morning. I had about and half an inch tear in my meniscus. I have got about a 90 degree plus range of motion already. I make sure to ice & elevate at least 4 inches above the heart after doing the range of motion stuff.
it been 11/2 month since my surgery (removal of a medial meniscus) well, its not much of a pain after the surgery. morning after my surgery i was advice to walk.. well it has bruise and swollen, the stitches limits my range of motion, den after the stitches (20 days) are removed i was back to normal walking, actually 5days after my surgery i went shopping to the mall (^_^) coz i feeling better. all i need know is to strengthen my knee BIKING helps me a lot. i have to work on Cutting and spins.
TWISTING is still hard, but i can Jog if i want. My meds (glucosamine) helps me reduce the pain, well honestly i dont feel pain.. so i'm just preparing my self hehehehe... coz i tnk i ran out of meds for a 1 week its still good
hello iam going for artho surgery of my lft knee i have medieval tear of meniscus does the knee pain after surgery and do i have to go for physical training immediately or after a week please let me know soon my surgery is on 25 aug 2009
I am about to have an MRI to see if i tore my left meniscus, I also play football. How long will it be till i will be able to play if the tear is not as serious as we think?
i had a tear a while ago, i had a large portion or my medial meniscus removed and part of my lateral, i was able to play football after about 2 weeks, even though i was advised otherwise, but it felt great, after one month of continued play im now feeling the effects, it has become very painful and im fearing further damage, so id say make sure u leave it for at least one month, sorry if this response was l8 :L
After surgery, it'll take AT LEAST 6 months to heal completely. Then after the 6 months, you then VERY SLOWLY build back up to the weight training that you used to do. As for your situation, Ice it every 3 hrs for at least 15-20 min. Do this for about a month of NO playing any sport, no running, jumping, bending, or ANY type of activities other than walking. When you ice it, massage the icebag into the injured area. But don't press to hard. GOD Bless!
i have a medial meniscus tear (posterior horn ) i don,t have any problems at all in my knees except knee locking from time to time ( every 1 year ) ... i am really confusing should i go to perform the operation or better to wait and gain time in which my menisci protect me from arthritis that is expected to occur with time in case of removal of my meniscus ????
omg are you crazy? meniscus is a very VERY serious injury no matter how common it is. It can decrease your quality of life instantly. Don't play with a fire and give it time to settle. 3 months minimum!
Just had the surgery Wednesday (7/22/09). It took 10 months after the injury to get the surgery so my knee had worsened considerably. Doc had to remove 80% of my meniscus. I woke up to no pain for the first time in nearly a year. Knee is slightly swollen. Bled like a pig for the first 1.5 days. It still pops, but I can walk w/o pain and actually sleep now. Hopefully the popping leaves and full movement returns after physical therapy.
So I had an ACL recon in July 2001 and have had little problem with it. Had medial meniscus removed in October 2008 and was sneaking around without my crutches that night! I had little to no pain and very little swelling. The knee in the video looks very good.
This is not right. I can run and do just about anything I feel up to. And I've had two knee surgeries--an ACL recon in 2001 and a cartilage removal in October 2008. I would get a second opinion.
Recovery will be different based on if the meniscus was repaired (a long recovery) or if the tear was simply removed.
I had surgery two weeks ago and the tear(s) were removed. I was walking without crutches the next day and the day after that went without the pain med. Very little bruising, but I was definately swollen.
I can't kneel or put pressure on the knee but otherwise I feel perfectly normal again. I wonder why my experience was so different then others? It was honestly a breeze.
your knee looks way better than mine does. I had mine two weeks ago and my knee is still black and bruised. The bruises go from my thigh all the way down to my ankle.
i tore my meniscus, had surgery and they repaired it, and now i think i have torn it again. it will probably be removed now, but is it better to have a repaired one or have it taken out?i was either not moving/in crutches/in a brace/not being able to run for about 6-7 months total.
I'm having surgery on my meniscus aug 5th & I read & had a lot of questions to tell the doctor. If your doctor is able to repair your meniscus, it will take 4-6 months to heal, but in the long run its better for you because you'll still have that shock absorber there to protect your knee.
if your meniscus is unable to be repaired and has to be removed, the recovery is quicker 4-6 weeks, but in the end many people get arthritus because the cushion decreased so your knee is more bone on bone.
I had a lobal tear on my medial meniscus...I did this b/c I crashed while racing motocross...I had surgery on April 9 and I was walking back to normal on the 19th, stairs are wierd but i can do them
I am bball player as well and I played for more than 15 years ... now I got a torn meniscus while playing just recreational ball twice per week .. ain't that a b... anyway, I am getting this surgery done next week and I was wandering two things:
i) when can I drive after the surgery, and
ii) when can I swim (at least that if not playing basketball)
i just came back from the surgery at about two o clock.. i was wondering if someone could tell me about when i could play sports again, or if you've torn your meniscus and when you could do physical things again im going back to the doctor in a week.. thanks
it all depends on the nature of the surgery (repair vs/ meniscectomy). with repair you're on crutches 1 month. with meniscectomy it all depends on the amount of meniscus taken out. the more- the worse.
Going for lateral meniscus tear arthroscopic surgery to remove part or all of meniscus on Monday - ouch! This sounds very painful! Thanks for video and info here from all!
I had my surgery about three weeks ago to have a piece of my meniscus removed, I can straighten out my leg and walk normally but I still don't seem to have mobility in bending it back too far, i hope it gets better and not worst like some people have had, anyone have the same problem? and if so how long until it went away, if it even did go away
For me, the full range of motion still evades me 3years later. I got better as the months went past with physical therapy - using towels to pull the stretch further. Good luck.
yeah shit sucks..had a total knee replacment then medial menicus repair a year later..everyday i suffer from arthritius and im only 17 but its all good
damn man hope u get well, my mom has arthritus and she had knee surgery 2 days ago they drilled 2 holes in both sides of her knee and cleaned it out why i dont know, she now has to wait for a total knee replacement.
its nothing bro i had my knee joint replace and today i just got back from the hospital after arthroscopic surgery all within a year.both my knees going from bad to worst but one thing is that the hospital loves me cause of the money they got from me lol
no really-- on feb 9th i am going for my second. I thought the pain after was BAD!!!!!! Not happy about going back. I am over weight so I am going to be bearing to much on my knee
going to do water exercise to help with the extra weight on it
im 16 and got in to a car accident and cracked my cartaledge and tore my meniscus and i just got my sergery last wendsday and it kills but hopefuly it gets better with phyical theopy
Sweet. I'm getting my right knee done this week.

how are you doing now...I am facing torn meniscus surgery the day before Thanksgiving 2011 and I am wondering if I will feel up to going out Thanksgiving day? What are your thoughts based on your experience? Also How long before you could climb a flight of stairs?
Thanks, Hope you are recovering well!!! Happy Thanksgiving!!!

OSUlax959 6 months ago
@OSUlax959 I have no clue why my surgeon used 3 incisions instead of two...

@islesbelarus I think it's just the way they did the surgery then.

@katiemarie92294 it takes a lot longer to recover if the meniscus is repaired.

You have to wear an immobilizer. I had a lateral release and medial....whatever it's called in November 2010. It's been several months, and I'm still having trouble taking stairs and sitting on my knees. No feeling in some areas (I hope that's not a bad thing).

I'm going in for Meniscus and ACL reconstruction on Wednesday... Pain levels still off the charts?
1Prayerwarrior22 10 months ago
I will have this surgery in probably 4 hours. Have bucket handle tear in medial meniscus, some loose bodies and possible ACL injury. Let's see.
saad0105050 10 months ago
I had this done 10 days ago and it's still swollen but not near as much as it was the first 5 days. I though they would only do one or two incisions so I was surprised when I noticed the three incisions like you had as well.

That's nothing I had ACL, PCL, meniscus and Posteriolateral corner done in one sitting. I needed a wheelchair.
vicnetto 11 months ago
I could hardly walk the first days after the op so I didn't do any exercices either. I also took some pain meds and heard you shouldn't exercise while taking them, you need to listen to what your knee tells you. I'm now attending a physiotherapy group twice a week at my local hospital but it's mainly for the ACL so I guess the exercises would be different. If you're in doubt I think it's best to see a physiotherapist to give you some advice
Foolanna 11 months ago
I had arthroscopy and partial meniscectomy cause i had a bucket handle tear in my lateral meniscus in my left knee which had locked my knee and a complex tear to my medial meniscus. I had this op 2 days ago now, the swelling hasn't gone down at all yet and the pain is just constant. I haven't been able to do the exercises because of the pain. Can anyone give me an idea of how long until I'll be able to start moving it better or any other info on what i can do? cheers
sam180693 11 months ago
@sam180693
Training bike seems to work good for me
Foolanna 11 months ago
@Foolanna Cheers for the info, whats the best exercises to do after the op? or did you rest for a few days after? cause i have quite a bit of pain and like you say i cant fully straighten or bend my leg that much at all atm. Is it best to try and get it moving or just to rest

ahhh im getting this done in 2 months !
does it hurt afterwards ?
xoRachelandhearts 1 year ago
@xoRachelandhearts actually it does. But it doesn't compare to my ACL surgery. Pain was brutal. I'd deliver a baby if not for painkillers. After meniscus surgery it's not post op pain that you should worry about, but proper recovery afterwards.
islesbelarus 11 months ago
@xoRachelandhearts

@xoRachelandhearts do not take asprin or any imflamation inhibitor it will act as a growth repair inhibitor, google asprin delayed healing and pass it on. yes it hurts like a mother fucker.

had it done 9/13/10 major pain is gone but they do not tell you all the painful things you will experience after the "easy" surgery.

@bboyrocco I did physical therapy with the Athletic Trainier at my high school. I'm left with the bolt still inside and it causes major pain with weather and i have no feeling on the left side of my leg by the scar

i just had this surgery done last thursday and i'm healing well. i tore my acl over the summer and along with it tore my meniscus and that was just repaired. then a few weeks ago i tore my meniscus playing basketball so they just removed some this time. only 3 days out and i'm back to walking with no pain. i still limp a bit since it's still swollen. from what i've read meniscus removal heals alot faster. i do powerlifting so i hope i don't have too many problems in the future.

TenaciousBaller 2 years ago
Dude, I'm sorry to hear that, but what you do is actually stupid. Go friggin see doctor now! The more you delay the more damage you make to you meniscus and more consequences you'll face when you're old. Plus, from what I read you may have torn ligament as well. Go check yourself and be safe.
islesbelarus 2 years ago
I've read up on certain types of knee braces that can be worn in place of getting surgery...it's definitely more cost efficient considering that I don't have health insurance. The question is, how well do these braces work. I've already tried standard hinged knee braces, and they weren't at all effective.
TenaciousBaller 2 years ago
@TenaciousBaller

Did you do MRI? Knee doesn't have to pop all the time to have torn meniscus. If you have knee pain it can be meniscus tear.

I just had my right knee scoped yesterday morning and I stopped using my crutches this morning. I had about and half an inch tear in my meniscus. hey, I have had meniscus Implantation where they graft meniscus from the knee and grow it then replace it with the grown meniscus.
It does hurt but the drugs that they give you help a lot.
also you normally have about 6 weeks on crutches, then 6 weeks of recovery once your of the crutches.
Hope this makes you feel better.

manicprime 2 years ago
After surgery, it'll take AT LEAST 6 months to heal completely. Then after the 6 months, you then VERY SLOWLY build back up to the weight training that you used to do. As for your situation, Ice it every 3 hrs for at least 15-20 min. Do this for about a month of NO playing any sport, no running, jumping, bending, or ANY type of activities other than walking. When you ice it, massage the icebag into the injured area. But don't press to hard. GOD Bless!

I should also add that I'm middle aged, slightly overweight, and not athletic.
I only say this to give hope to those that will be doing the surgery soon. Don't listen to all the negative talk...it might go easy for you as well.

my incisions are only about a centimeter long, though. they haven't even bled.

your knee looks way better than mine does.

Long-term or short-term?

I'm having surgery on my meniscus aug 5th & I read & had a lot of questions to tell the doctor. If your doctor is able to repair your meniscus, it will take 4-6 months to heal, but in the long run its better for you because you'll still have that shock absorber there to protect your knee.
if your meniscus is unable to be repaired and has to be removed, the recovery is quicker 4-6 weeks, but in the end many people get arthritus because the cushion decreased so your knee is more bone on bone.

your knee looks bad. i have to get this done can you play sport as good as you use to and can you notice the pain anymore
eirebridge14 2 years ago
I had this done Friday, the 27th and it hurt me worse on the 3rd day than the first or the second.
But the pictures from the inside of the knee show that the bones that were out of alignment moved back to where they were supposed to be right away.

Thanks!
hstoykov 2 years ago
drive: 3-6 days
swim: you have to make sure incision points healed up so there would be no infection. 6 days IMO.

i just came back from the surgery at about two o clock.. i was wondering if someone could tell me about when i could play sports again, or if you've torn your meniscus and when you could do physical things again im going back to the doctor in a week.. thanks

how long does it take to walk properly and be back at sports and for the pain to go away?
some ppl say the next day, others a month...
someone please reply im nervous
arny4me 2 years ago
it all depends on the nature of the surgery (repair vs/ meniscectomy). with repair you're on crutches 1 month. with meniscectomy it all depends on the amount of meniscus taken out. the more- the worse.

I had my surgery about three weeks ago to have a piece of my meniscus removed, I can straighten out my leg and walk normally but I still don't seem to have mobility in bending it back too far, i hope it gets better and not worst like some people have had, anyone have the same problem? and if so how long until it went away, if it even did go away
joesom58 3 years ago
For me, the full range of motion still evades me 3years later. I got better as the months went past with physical therapy - using towels to pull the stretch further. Good luck.
