FNORDQ.....ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT work on the art for the video! this needs to be submitted to Portishead asap for consideration as the OFFICIAL video for this song. the dark disdain of the artwork is a perfect compliment to the equally dark and disdainful song. My soul belongs to Ms. Gibbons and Mr. Barrow.
See this is why Portishead listeners are like there are own society. We don't call people "faggots and douches" like other comment strings I've seen. We share information and find our own poetic ways to say "Portishead kicks ass". That makes me smile. Thanks to all of you who have brightened my day by acting like an online community of artists, music enthusiasts, and mature people. PEACE
@saraylane The song "Hookers and Gin" was created by Portishead when they were unable to find the perfect sample for this song. I know, I was really disappointed too!
@cconat You're missing my point, this is partly my fault due to my lack of explanation. Civilization implements more organized, methodical ways of murder. The holocaust is a perfect example. Serial killers are a manifestation of civilization's clean way of delivering death to others. Because they are born out of Civilization, they learn ways to kill and dispose of their dead. I think what you fail to realize is that there is a dark side to the golden age, humans are not infallible.
for some reason, I equate this song with serial killers. the refrain seems to suggest that with 'serpent's breath'(the advent of christianity, the polarization of good and evil), and western eyes(the advent of civilization as we know it now) have both contributed their fare share to the existence of sociopaths who kill and do other twisted things for pleasure.
@turkeysub3000 funny you should say that, i wrote a crappy screenplay a few years ago about a serial killer and i played this song practically non stop as i wrote it, actually imagined it as the song playing over the final scene as the weathy killer casually and arrogantly escapes once again, leaving our main characters dying in his wake
You will never find it. Hookers & Gin from the "sean atkins experience" is just a joke they explain the process of making the song. type in Hookers & Gin from the "sean atkins experience" then look for kotinetti.suomi.net/heikki.hietala/westerneyes.htm
@zaitt I think it's a sort of energized melancholy they've captured. I say it's energized, given as that it doesn't just sap the spirit out of the listener - as, I'm afraid, some other approaches to melancholic music may. There's an indelible cleverness in the Portishead style - so I think, anyways.
I love it. when i am bummed out, I listen to it. and it somehow gets me out of my funk...but when i let my friends listen to it they always say ...oh it's to depressing for me!
@zaitt know what you mean. I feel sort of empowered a little when someone speaks out some feelings I have. It´s like you see you´re not the only person to feel how you feel...
@zaitt "This is a very sad song, but if you're like me, I always find the saddest music is also the most beautiful and this is one of my favorite songs that I've ever written" - Steven Wilson on Stop Swimming (Porcupine Tree) .
It's actually *not* a sample as I recall, but actually a self-made bit treated to sound "lo-fi retro." The album credits is as the Sean Atkins Project of 1957, but it's sort of an in joke. Google "hookers and gin" and you should get the explanation on the first page.
pretty good work in the animation.. you got the scence of the song.... so sensual voice i love portishead since the first time that i listen them... in 1997
I think you summed up the angst very well in this short. I would be curious about what animation techniques you used in this, I have had a few ideas for some DCD songs...care to chat?
The movie "Watchmen" was horrid. I didn't even bother to finish watching the movie. After an hour, I gave up. Bored me to death. The movie was misleading and bland.
als würde ich in einem hellen zimmer sitzen mit dramatischen bilden an der wand ......einem leichten wind und sonnenstrahlen die mein gedicht berühren .......* zeitlos
It is depressing but beautiful nonetheless. I was a die-hard Portishead fan at the peak of my suicidal phase. I can only listen to them in small doses now.
I know what you mean... during a period I was listening to Dummy and Portishead while I was in love with a girl (I wrote a long text about her called the Portishead Experience). Then the girl disappeared, we sort of broke up. I couldn't listen for Portishead songs for five or six years. And everytime the radio or a friend of mine was playing Glory Box or Roads I wanted to jump out of the window. Now I feel better, I can listen Beth's voice again but my hearts fills up with great sadness.
its a spoof sample. the guy singing is called Sean Atkins, formerly of the band 'Whores of Babylon' and friend of Geoff Barrow. in the CD liner notes, the sample is said to be from a track called 'Hookers and Gin' credited to the 'Sean Atkins Experience' from 1957 'released on Starfish records' - like i said, a spoof sample. :)
Depressing is good. If you come to me 4 comfort, first I will instigate you into expressing negative emotions. Works so good when you keep your stance 2 present logical reasoning & then it makes sense. An aha moment & the open door to your heart of one's thought thinking to seek solutions. No longer is the focus on what has but rather now the what if? Conflict is good time 2 stop & question self "what lessons am i 2 learn at this time?" Ask & the answer comes.U will know & power of no aswell
interesting, you have talent , but for my tastes its too predictable, cliched, expected and heavy handed ... perhaps a different, less obvious perspective would have been satisfying.
"...the sample at the end of 'Western Eyes' which is credited on the album as S. Atkins, taken from 'The Sean Atkins Experience', 1957, Starfish Records Inc. This is a joke. 'The Sean Atkins Experience' does not exist. The review explains that this is a made-up sample which 'has been slowed to a Sinatra pace'. so I had Western Eyes on the turntable playing and coincidently I just finished playing Nardis by Miles Davis. You can defiantly mix the lead from Nardis and play it over Western Eyes or take her voice and play it over Nardis... in my opinion. It sounds pretty cool. I dunno...
Try this.
Steps:
1. Put this song.
2. Open other tab in google
3. Search "Rainymood"
4. Open the first page.
5. Play on this song and the Rainymood open.
Enjoy.
