The difference between KPRC & KXAS even at this period was relatively obvious, though both were still relatively hard news operations at the time. During the first year or so of the News 2 Houston era, KTRK was attempting to copy what they thought KPRC was doing and looked even more sensationalistic in the process.
Also, into the late 90's they were still a consistent #2 of the big 3 affiliates in town. Around 2000 is when the true slide began.
Wow...it doesn't seem so bad there. That set didn't last long...I remember them having that news room set where they stood up (hated that) during the '96 Olympics.

The music is a package called "Hometown News" by Frank Gari. They still use it frequently for the opens.
