I can't believe all these negative dark-age remarks. I'm a Lutheran organist so I guess I am a heretic? I very much respect the Catholic faith and in a way consider myself a Catholic-Lutheran. I go to mass once in a while to worship instead of having to think about playing the organ at the Lutheran church. Thank God for David Haas and Marty Haugen! Their music has at times pulled me out of some dark depressions. All that matters is that we worship the triune God and accept Christ!
i am a life long practicing catholic. this is not the dark ages it is 2010, the catholic church needs to step into it. there are parts of the mass that need to stay traditional but as for the music it needs to move more main stream.
@heyko2004 Thank you. Our church is a progressive church. It grows with time and changes according to the leading of the Holy Spirit. That is why the prayer is "Lead us Lord and we will follow". If today you hear His voice, harden not your hearts.
The only solution to this mortal sin is to reject Vatican II and return to the true Mass, the only Mass of the Catholic Church, the Tridentine Mass and to Tradition.
@WeepingStellaMaris The "traditional" Mass is nothing like the first Mass. At the first Mass, there was no trace of Latin, kneelers, organs. There was Jesus and his disciples. The same authority which has given us the valid, beautiful "Traditional" Mass has given us the vernacular Mass. This one here is a bit excessive for my tastes, but if it isn't breaking any rules as set forth by the Church, it is Holy.
@purplecwagon There is a heresy called the Heresy of Antiquity. The Lutherans love to indulge in this heresy. Council of Trent is what we ought to follow, as if we don't follow it, we are anathema. --St. Pius V
Just about every Catholic "hymnal" has some statement in the front about how it was approved by this or that council of bishops. That doesn't mean they actually looked at anything in it besides the text. David Haas should be excommunicated for this.
Singing the Eucharistic Prayer is beautiful and glorious- my gripe is that this goes against what is said in the rubrics- in regards to the fact that NO instrumental accompaniment should happen during when the Priest utters the words of the Eucharist Prayer(s).
Mass is not a "higher sacrifice" because of the effort it takes to rehearse music. Mass is the ULTIMATE SACRIFICE because of JESUS CHRIST and his DEATH for us!
It is PROHIBITED to provide INSTRUMENTAL ACCOMPANIMENT DURING THE EUCHARIST PRAYER! You can SING IT- but you can not make it like a broadway operetta recitative. And that is what this is- cheesy chord progressions, terrible sounding synthesized strings, tacky "pop" music.
And trust me, I agree with you in regards to singing- but music needs to be of the HIGHEST QUALITY at MASS- and this music is not. It is banal.
i live in louisiana, and I personally have never seen this anywhere in LA as long as I have been going to Mass, but I can only speak for someone who's who lives in LA
Mass is not meant to be a Musical. The GIRM forbids musical accompaniment to the mass. The Mass is first and foremost a Sacrifice, not an off-Broadway Show. I wish Priests would follow the rubrics.
I was trained in Liturgy under the US Catholic Conference of Bishops and in liturgy training, we are taught to enhance the liturgy as much as possible. the GIRM does NOT forbid the use of singing. it merely offers us a guide as to what are the possabilities made available to us. Stop and think about what the saints have often said...."singing is praying twice" therefore what can it hurt? if you don't prefer it, then go to a more traditional setting of mass instead.
See my post below- also Mass is GOOD FRIDAY. It is first and foremost a Sacrifice. In all honesty, this seems more like a SHOW than Mass. Just compare it to not just a tasteful Eucharistic prayer (unaccompanied) dialogue- but to all the Eastern Rite Divine Liturgies. There is no comparison. Music needs to be of the highest quality as the Catechism and our Holy Father would say.
Mediocre sounding music that could pass for commercial jingles or TV themes that is put out through hymnals such as Gather, Glory and Praise and anything by OCP, is really an aesthetic tragedy. It certainly DOES NOT "ENHANCE THE LITURGY AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE". MUSIC SUCH AS THIS DISTRACTS.
tell that to the majority of people that attend. Vatican II has ALWAYS encouraged us to work with the different cultures and unfortunately this is ours. if you feel the need to revert to the old ways, i know of many places that still host latin mass/ traditional mass settings. I completely disagree with your OPINION, however it is your opinion and I cannot change what YOU think.
hi there! I agree- it encourages cultures, but only to an extent, and in all honesty the GIRM does say no musical accompaniment during the Eucharist Prayer... CDOG isn't just stating an opinion, be he is actually saying what Holy Mother Church requires during worship.
Mass of Light was written by David Haas and was approved to be used in the church, as Mass of Creation, Mass of Joyful Heart, etc.
If you have any thing against it, you can write the office of the worship of the right diocese. They will entertain you and come up with the right answer. This office is very knowledgeable about this subject.

@Slarty947 The chanting and singing is beautiful at a High Mass or Eastern Rite- they wouldn't have a synth. accompanying the celebrant with a drum set and a pop choir singing in a style that sounds like Jesus Christ Superstar..... and the Eastern Rite wouldn't have any instruments period.

This approach is really helping our Mass attendance, belief in the Real Presence and numbers of vocations, right?

Ehh..you are stuck in the past. I like the traditional stuff as well, but singing the mass allows everyone to participate.

@CDOG111 Someone hasn't been to a high Mass, or even better, the Eastern Rite, where everything is chanted and sung, except for the sermon, maybe.
