I climbed Mt Kinabalu on Mac 2010....start at 7am n reached the top of Mountain at 1.57pm ...my legs became jelly...argh...great experience though....=)
sorry to hear that :( don't worry too much though, if its dark you can't see anything from the top anyway. Hope you got to relax in the hot springs just down the road afterwards:)
I just came back from Kota Kinabalu 2 weeks ago and I loved it. I did climb to the summit for sunrise... but it's weird because i only wore two layers of clothing to go to the summit at night from Laban Rata. :P but I loved the last part. getting to Low's Peak (ironic huh?) was so cool. But thanks for making this video. It brings back a lot of memories :)
Next year,April to May,I'll go there to climb for the 3rd times. Maybe to others from high altitude region find it easy to climb but remember there were several of them died up there due to extreme low temp...just dont under estimate this mountain.
yep for some of it, there is one particularly exciting rock scramble (especially at night when you can't see the edge of the cliffs) using ropes but its not too bad.
okay, I just came back from Mount Kinabalu .. Didn't make it to the summit as the weather conditions was really bad .. strong winds .. rains .. and the cold. About the rock scramble, you're talking about the Summit Push right? Yeah .. It was kind of scary... and we had to hang on to only wet ropes
If you live at high altitude it does indeed make it easier. I would not say it is easy for most of us who live at lower altitudes. One friend of mine who runs (low altitude marathons) and was by far and away the fittest of my friends unexpectedly got altitude sickness. You never know who or when someone will get it so although jumko may have allegedly found it easy, please do not take this mountian for granted, people have died on it in the past, the temp can and does fall pretty low at the top.
I used to live at altitudes higher then that. And when i ascended Mt.Kinabalu a couple of years ago, it was one easy hike. Not to mention the lack of extreme temperatures on Mt.Kinabalu which makes it so much more easier.
wow thanks for this! :) im climbing this next near with 50 other peopl from my school! i cant wait. is it really tough going?... im not the fittest u see lol! XD
Yes it is pretty tiring and there is the possibility of altitude sickness but that can affect anyone, make sure you stick with your guide. Best to do a small amount of training for it first unless you want to have aching legs and knees for a week after climbing it. The view is worth every aching muscle though, best of luck, its a beautiful mountain!
uh, didnt you peak? "well we got to the top." but you pan around and you're nowhere near the peak. it's a rocky crag with a signpost, quite a daunting area, really. about 13000 feet. whats up with that?
It was pitch black so there wasn't much point in filming (the infra red filming was running down my videocamera battery) but yes, you'll be glad to know, I did reach the peak, thats where the still photos that are in the film were taken.

Kara: I wouldn't call it "easy" unless you are a marathon runner or a professional athlete.
