  • i remember the spider egg rumour, i was like " cool, spiders"

  • The urban legend that nearly killed this brand; spiders' eggs in Bubble Yum.

It had to be deliberate because this gum was just the greatest. And the rumour was on both sides of the candy counter. One teenager at the local deli even confirmed (lol!) that it was going off the market, circa 1977.

  • I remember when Bubble Yum came out. It was my first year in Junior High School. So, this commercial must be dated 1975-1976. I also remember them taking it off the market because of some health issue. It came back a few years later but it never tasted the same.

  • Fun memories! What year did this commercial come out? Was it '77, or '78?

  • @Stevedup 1977

  • I use to see red furry creatures talking to me at my library. Then I went away for a long time ...

  • Truely classic. I totally remembered this one.

  • wow thats pretty long :D

  • YUM Spider Eggs!

  • that gum looks good

  • Flavor Fiend seems like a cool guy, He steals kid's bubble gum and doesn't afraid of anything.

  • Wierd to see a commercial that I've seen--but not since I was 5 years old

  • B.Y. was the rage in my junior high school when it first came out in the mid-70s. One Urban Legend regarding why it was so soft was that Life Savers had put bug eggs in it.

Soon after that came Freshen Up Gum, with "love that squirt" liquid in the middle. Its own U.L. was that it was embalming fluid

This was right around the same time that "Mikey" (from the Life Cereal ads) had supposedly mixed Pop Rocks with Coke, drunk it and "blown up."

  • best 30 second commercial ive EVER seen lol

  • That dude needs to get the fuck out the library people trying to study and whatnot gtfo and get a real hat brah.

  • my 3 1/2 year old loves this commercial lol

  • When you try new soft and juicy Bubble Yum.

A flavor fiend will be there wanting some,

Because the big long lasting taste of Bubble Yum,

Is what he's been long long longing for by gum!

So if a flavor fiend should be there don't you worry!

Send him off with long long lasting Bubble Yum!

He wont' be needing anymore in a big hurry.

The flavor lasts so long long long in Bubble Yum!

  • HAHA SCARY

  • When someone does that...its called - " THE SWOOP"

  • WH

I remember the issue with this was the red dye that was in teh regular gum. I think they removed it. Did they or not?

  • Thanks.

  • I LOVE this commercial! My other favorite Bubble Yum commercial (which aired in the late '70's) was one of an older guy who said "I'm about to do something you haven't done in years...blow bubbles..not just with any gum....with BUBBLE YUM bubble gum!!" If anyone remembers this one, or has it, please let me know!

  • I remember a Bubble Yum commercial where a line was sung, which ended with "Bubble Yum". To which a puppet popped up & yelled, "Bubble Yum?". Then the song continued. I THINK the next line ended with "number one.", to which the puppet yelled, "number one?". Does this sound AT all familiar?

  • I remember that Flavor Fiend from 1976-77. He actually freaked me out as a kid, but I think he's cool now! I used to LOVE the Grape Bubble Yum, but it was hard as a rock! I think Bubble Yum contributed to my TMJ in my right jawbone!

  • Awesome! I haven't seen this commercial since I was a kid! I never knew the name of the puppet who always took the gum and said, "So Long!" I always called him "The Bubble Yum Bandit." Thanks for the memories.

  • trivia>> what year was the commercial when the kid reaches the hot air balloon with a bubb yum bubble? 1979-1983

  • When you try new soft and juicy Bubble Yum, the Flavor Fiend will be there wanting some. He won't be needing any more in a big hurry, the flavor lasts so long long long in Bubble Yum!

  • Didn't Bill Baird do the Marionette Sequence (The Lonely Goatherd) in The Sound of Music?

  • He most certainly did! That was a wonderful sequence in that film, and the marionettes were just adorable.

  • Those spider eggs sure taste good.

  • Love it. The puppeteer was Bill Baird. We had a lot of fun - thanks for uploading a very, very old commercial of mine . . . brings back memories.

  • my pleasure, thanks for posting creativeinsight.

  • Interesting info on Bill Baird involved with this. Not knowing what he sounded like, was that his voice as well?

LOL, the times I spent reading his shirt aloud as "Flavor Friend". :)

  • @creativeinsight Was that Bill Baird of Sound of Music fame?

  • When good Muppets go bad!

    (Or good wannabe Muppets.)

  • Great upload, love2register2! :D

  • Thanks daftmahatma, hope you get your comp. issues straightened out! My capture device died and I'm working on a replacement so I can upload more VHS material.
