Your best chance is if you get shot in the chest and not in the lungs or heart. Being shot in the stomach will kill you. Being shot in the leg will leave you flat on your ass (my friend downtown and ended up in the middle of a shoot-out, got hit). Getting shot in the arm might not stop you but you'll probably never be able to use that arm prorperly again.

You can't expect such a delicate and specilzed weapon to stand up towards a mordern firearm by any standards. Its simply way too much energy for the blade to disperse over such a small area. If the blade had been given a special alloy and hardend a diffrent way it might have taken 10 or 12 bullets.

the katana did split the first rounds but the amount of bullets was too much for the blade to stay sharp imagine they took the sharpness away from the blade, that turns the blade to a piece of metal and then the bullets rip through.

I mean, they wore armor made of leather and WOOD! We needed iron plates for protection!

What really happens in real life is that in a flash, the samurai flashes straight through to the back of all the enemies with guns (with both having backs against each other of course), and they freeze there for a few seconds, then all the enemies drop, while cut up cleanly

@gutsack If theory if the Samurai was more then 1500-1600m away the velocity would be sub sonic, and the bullet would possibly split such as with the handgun cartridges.

Your best chance is if you get shot in the chest and not in the lungs or heart. Being shot in the stomach will kill you. Being shot in the leg will leave you flat on your ass (my friend downtown and ended up in the middle of a shoot-out, got hit). Getting shot in the arm might not stop you but you'll probably never be able to use that arm prorperly again.

This katana was probably forged using modern techniques and modern materials. The iron available to medieval Japanese swordsmiths was incredibly inferior to contemporary Western iron, which is why they had to "fold" the blade so many times - otherwise, it would have an uneven distribution of carbon, and would often break.

Actually it can be achieved in medeval times. The trick to it is about the cooling process.
Metal cooled at certain temp, will create iron/steel. The katana was a mix of steel and iron.

Headshots arent always fatal, and if you're unlucky the bullet could deflect from the samurai's iron mask. If we repeated the scenario a thousand times, of course the gunman would win in most scenarios, that is if he can hit the dude. A charging, screaming samurai can throw you off balance, you know.

While this video shows that the Katana is capable of slicing the bullet in half, it does not mean that the Katana is superior to the gun in actual combat. Common sense implies that a gun is still more effective in battle because of its range and speed of the projectile when fired. The gun's one and only weakness is when it's in close range, at which, while it makes it easier to shoot the enemy up close, it also gives him a chance to counter-attack the gun wielder, disarm, and kill if needed.

Knives and Axes, made as tools, evolved into weapons of war, the blade specialized, being useless in any other field.
Guns are the same way, just a much farther range, and you can hunt/"Fish" with them.

You can't expect such a delicate and specilzed weapon to stand up towards a mordern firearm by any standards. Its simply way too much energy for the blade to disperse over such a small area. If the blade had been given a special alloy and hardend a diffrent way it might have taken 10 or 12 bullets.
Still impressive craftmenship from the smiths side, a fine blade I would chouse any time in a melee fight.

Thats actually not true, a human being can withstand many, many bullets without dying. A gun can't actually kill anything unless it hits something vital, if a samurai were to use a katana on a human as they did then there was almost no chance of survival, too many things sliced through or decapitation. If your going to talk about range and argue a gun is better because you don't have to get up close, then you have no honor, nor respect as a human being. Only a coward will not face his opponent.

If a bullet hits you in any part of your upper-body from your shoulder to your waist, the chances are enormously high that you'll be killed or permanently crippled. In fact, you'll be lucky if you are crippled.
Real life doesn't work like action movies. You can't just take eight to nine bullets straight in the chest and still be walking. Just one bullet from the most standard-issue, basic, cost-efficent handgun will be enough to leave you on your ass, if not bleeding to death.

Should you withstand so much more than a mere graze from a bullet, you're going to go into shock and be left helpless. Anything more and you're dead, or you're rendered permanently useless.
Even if you get shot in the leg, you know what your chances are of ever using that leg again? Extremely low. And losing a leg is one of the best-case consequences to getting shot.

if this was true then a soldier is as expendable a thing as the bullet itself. Human beings are capable of living through much, much more then they do nowadays, why? simple constitution and mindset. a soilder thinks "I'm shot!" and thus panics, a warrior thinks "I'm hit, you asshole!" and will keep the charge. a Human being can survive and continue to fight through any form of injury the doesn't cut off a limb, or hit a vital area without much hinderance should one have the right mind.

I have been shot before my friend, both in the leg, and in the chest, and I managed to run to a hospital with a collapsed lung and a bullet in the leg, mind you I wasn't in the greatest of shape by any reason and most definitely FELT like I was going to die within a few steps, but simple survival instinct and adrenaline along with the thought "I need to make it" over, and over, I was able to make it there. I still have a bullet in my tibia, and I run, and parkour as good as when I was a teen.

Oh please, European swordmaking was much, much better. Our swords were stronger, lighter and could actually cut from -both- edges. Not to mention the only reason japanese swords were revered is because their iron is so fucking shitty that they have to fold the steel a dozen more times than the European counterparts, and thus it was really hard to make a sword that was still inferior to European design. I mean, they wore armor made of leather and WOOD! We needed iron plates for protection!
