My goodness! You guys did an excellent job! I just learned this song on Koto today. It took me almost 3 hours to take the train, subways, and busses from my city to San Fernando Valley. You guys would be my inspiration to keep on learning koto and become a professional. You guys rock! I hope to see more video someday. ^_^
Yeah, it didn't pick up but we are actually singing a song about sakura in Japanese that talks about the beauty of cherry blossoms falling in winter (basically how its temporary and fleeting)
OMG! There are so many stupid comments on this video! I thought you guys did fine. Not amazing but nice. I think All the commenters under me should stop being so racist and prejudice. We are all HUMAN!!! Nuf said! So shut up, ばかやろ!!
Japan is one of the most prejudiced cultures on the planet. The genotype is so small that even those with hair that swirls around the wrong way are looked down upon. I cud over look the pitch issues, but the timing was sloppy!
I'm what's called "haafu" or half, though I prefer the term "double". That's about the only racism I've felt in Japan, on behalf of my "gaijin" blood, that title.
PS. Did you just read "Rising Sun" or whatever it was called, by Michael Connely? That book is full of crap.
"Performance on July 2, 2006 in Yotsuya, Tokyo, Japan. I was lead koto in this presentation. Yes I am gaijin"
Shut-up, if you knows the proper Japanese ettiquette (bow down) and plays the Koto really good, then your part of the Japanese community. Dont isolate yourself like some people with the gaijin-complex
I say that because most people would be confused I believe. It's very hard to fit into a very traditional and conservative traditional instrument club when you are gaijin. Some clubs wouldn't allow you in if they were non-university. Actually I was very dismayed that the other gaijin in the club decided to have their own little parties and never went with their Japanese club members.
It doesn't matter how much you try to be Japanese, you're still gaijin. It's not an issue of having a complex or self-isolation, it's matter of fact in Japanese culture. =\
No, because "American" isn't considered an ethnicity. Unlike Japan, there isn't one singular ethnicity, we're a mixed culture. But Japan has one ethnicity that makes up nearly the entire population. Look at it this way, you come from a complete non-Japanese background, but know all the important points of Japanese culture. Would you be Japanese? Of course not.
America is a country of immigrant...thats a history 101 for both of us, of course. The issue here is that in America those people of european decents claims themselves to be the majority and us the minority...this is the exact same concept as that of gaijin like you who is living in Japan. its the US Vs. Them
the notion of US vs. Them creates, what we already know as the conflict of interest. The interest between the easterners and the westerners. This creates a divide and this is one of the reason why you can not think like Japanese. Never, its impossilbe. Unless you were raised by Japanese foster parents.
The differences between the Japanese and "YOU"...as you know it, its the language barrier and the "外見"
外見:おまえさー日本人見たいじゃないから。
Language: Can you speak their language ? We dont want gaijin with broken Japanese hanging out with us at the local izakaya. Would you not agree, that you may find yourself being weird with some Japanese who speaks in broken "Engrish" at the cowboy club of some sort?.
you say "It doesn't matter how much you try to be Japanese, you're still gaijin."
you can say the EXACT same here in America, where I live...its a Minority complex issue here. This makes you feel isolated among American. Now, you came to understand how much tough it is to live in a country dominated by the non-western culture/ideology, it would be same for me trying to think like them...I was not born there and did not receive early education there. Which makes a huge difference.
Get into a great koto circle if you can at a local college. Try to ask around to see if there are local koto circles (non-college). This was a college koto circle performance.
ohh this song reminds me that much of 'Age Of Empires'
good old times...

Are they singing something? If you listen very closely you can hear them under the koto music. I wonder what they are saying.

Wouldn't that be the same as "gaijin" in America? where some night club refuse visible minority the right of entrance...

If kept out of a japanese place, I'd just threaten them with more incendiaries. They live in paper houses anyway.
