  • it still cant compete to the queen of all backhands===> JUSTINE HENIN. No offense but she hits a backhand even federer would cower in fear!

  • Roger is true class

  • Love You Roger;

  • Roger Federer Best. Love You Roger

  • you said that already..no need to post the same shit again in Youtube...unless you are Federer himself, or his wife, or a Nike promotor..

  • That's just sexy....

  • my backhand is just like his!

  • (mental jerk off)

  • Same here...

  • just have a look at Lendl's top spin backhand.

It was so powerful that he even managed to counter Wilander's double handed top spin backhand. By the way federer's topspin backhand is not effective against Nadal's heavy wicked topspin. we seldom see Federer use slices against Nadal..that's for sure...

  • you are smart, its about time i hear something intelligent for a comment. nice job

  • someone should really put this to epic music

  • feet mid air at 0:17

  • The technique is perfect and the timing is insane, but still with that, Gasquet, Haas, Ljubicic, Kohlshreiber have better one handed backhands.

  • But none are more beautiful than this one.

  • amazing beauty backhand

  • Just as a note to the average tennis player do not attempt to rotate the racquet and your wrist as much as Federer does here. It can very easily lead to tennis elbow. If you do attempt this anyway be sure to counter rotate your elbow back to proper position (where your racquet would be if you did not use any wrist movement) after you finish the stroke. For one handed backhands heavy top-spin is not really recommended. Flat or slight top spin is much more effective as a result of the extra reach.

  • you dont see that very often anymore :(

  • love his swing

  • Pure Sexiness

  • look at that timing!

  • Beautiful backhand

  • I think he meant best one handed backhand..

  • Calm down there. I understand why you'd be upset, but Pancho Gonzalez has often been referred to as the one man you'd want to have on court if your life depended on the outcome of one match. Pancho focused on the old professional circuit instead of remaining an amateur for very long. He beat almost all of his great contemporaries most of the time in barnstorming pro tours. The man was a cutthroat competitor, a mean version of Rafael Nadal. Don't underestimate him.

  • what grip did he used?

  • Standard Eastern Backhand Grip

  • @umixut85 You sure that's an Eastern ? I thought it was more continental than eastern :\

  • @crunchycool No, it's Eastern. If you look closely, you'll see that his top knuckles are even with the rim of the racquet.

  • Sumptous. Almost balletic.

  • Fabulous clip !!

  • powerful

  • beautiful =)

  • one thing a lot of players don't do, including pros, which he is doing, is extending the non-hitting arm backward. that helps you stay with the shot!

  • Extending the non-hitting arm backward is just an option to balance the body. It creates more power if you choose not to pull the non-hitting arm backward, but follow the same direction of the hitting arm.

  • so if you follow the hitting arm with the other arm instead of extending it back, it seems to me to become more like a two handed backhand where your entire torso rotates instead of staying still like Fed is doing

  • right! i do that... =)

  • The other thing is he keeps the eye on the ball, most of the players take their eye away...its almost like he is focused on middling the ball and knows where the ball will land...

  • Let´s hope Roger´s back on the road for tennis sake. When he feels his tennis´s back to stay he must do something about to reinforce his backhand for real. Get real stability and agresiveness.( As I once said, get a pro or ex-pro who mastered this stroke in any situation to train with, like Guga/Gasquet..). Like Sampras did with Lendl.

We all saw hopeful quite a few flashes of that in this USOpen08.

  • i have the same opinion like driftkido- very high bouncing balls are not easy to handle with the slice- you guys never played against such a topspinplayer like nadal, he has the most devastating topspin on the forehand in history

  • Until Murray took his game apart in US Open. Nadal had no defence against Murrays game. He was totally out played. As he states himself.

Murray took on Nadals arsnal shot for shot, baseline,fore/back hand and power shots and beat him in all. Have you ever seen Nadal sucking it up on court as he did with Murray.

Murray plays a completely different game, he is an intelligent player, some say he has a mensa IQ in tennis. This will make tennis all the more interesting 2009. Bring it on.

  • right.... give it up buddy

    federers the best

    end of story

  • Federer has the records to prove IMO that he is. However, just now he needs to do abit more work.

  • Even though the current grass in Wimbl isn´t the same as some years ago, Nadal´s high ball does not reach that heigth as in clay. Roger wouldn´t have given away so many points with the slice. Because of "he was born" with this stroke, it´s much easier for him to lower it and be dangerous at the same time. If the match was so tight what would happened with 20unforced errors less.

  • ... How can a top player aspire to beat Nadal with so many errors !!!. Ok Roger is GREAT because even so he got to the 5th set, but honestly nobody thought he would. I WILL JUST KEEP ON WONDERING FOREVER WHY HE DID NOT USE HIS SLICED BACKHAND. Would have cut down the half the errors and gain effectiveness especially on grass. He´s the master at this stroke and Nadal´s certainly had to have troubles as in the 05'&06' final. Simply he would have won. What a chance wasted so easily!!.

  • A decent slice will not do the job. Nadal has a big top spin forehand that can bounce very high. It's not easy to slice and make the ball low from that kind of ball.

  • It was probably because he was not firing on all cylinders at that time. He was aware of what was working and what was not, even tho he did not shy away from it on occasion it was letting him down. Roger knew his defense was working better than his offense. Now he is back to the norm you can see all aspects of his game is back to normal. His health must now be back to normal. 2009 will be interesting, to have credibility all those who beat him in 2008 will have to beat him again.

  • Federer´s backhand is just for the camera. In real life is too erratic, give away so many points. In clay this stroke is a complete disaster against Nadal. It´s completely useless. It turned to be the grave of his almost reached tennis deity. The backhand was his achilles heel. Hooray to Nadal for revealing that. When Roger needed the most of his intelligence to defeat Nadal at Wimbledon 08', incredibly he kept on using the backhand topspin on and on which helped to count 51 errors!!.Please!!

  • just look at the extension, unreal

  • what extension

  • my fav backhand shot

  • end of the day he is worlds number one how ever he is hitting his back hand it seems to work

  • he may not have the most effective backhand, but he definitely has the best form.

  • Just out of curiosity, who has a more effective backhand?

  • maybe i worded it wrong. i meant federer's backhand is not a weapon. gasquet's is more powerful and effective

  • although i dont like gasquet's form

  • Well Gasquet might use it as a weapon more than Roger but I really think Roger has the best backhand in Men's Tennis. His backhand doesn't SEEM like that big of a weapon because he has so many others. When he gets into long rallies he really just uses his backhand to create errors or setup eventual winners from the forehand.

  • o ya i agree

federer has the best backhand in all of tennis

it just doesnt seem like a weapon cause all of his other aspects r so good

  • well noted

  • i think haas got the better form, but federer is quite effective

  • Power dosen't equate to more effective in tennis. If you really watch Federer, a. He has more power than he lets on/uses on every shot, b. he has amazing finess and form that make him so graceful that it is misleading. He plays a head game, baiting you then crushing you with his backhand, forehand, whatever. Really look closely and you will see that even with a one hander he he packs a super accurate punch. He forces you into erroes with finess and precision.

  • Such a hard action to pull of fluidly, at a constant rate but the whipping action....deadly and accurate.

  • long live richard gasquet

  • top shelf backhand

his grip is 'Australian' - we invented it.

type in 'borg vs laver 1997' on the you tube search engine...

watch for the laver backhand dipping heavy topspin flick by borg re: hilton head 1977 - mind you laver is almost 40 years here...

when u see a bit of Laver play u realise that Federer is a modernisation of Laver on the backhand wing...

    enjoy...

  • A class act, prepared complete athlete ready to become the greatest player of all time.

  • Nuckles on top = eastern

  • Man he hits the sweet spot every damn time. Roger is awesome

  • He hits sweet spot when he is playing low balls but when he is hitting high balls he shanks it alot. And when he plays Nadal he shamks it more.

  • Did you tried both rackets? I have both and babolat aeropro is infinitely easier than wilson tour 90. It's unbelievable as Roger can use it!

  • If you think that it is infinitely easier to use a 90 inch square head compared to a 100 inch, you must seriously suck. People see 90 square inches and think either "I'm the next Federer, I'll be an idiot and do it" or "OMG! 90?! That's impossible!!!" The fact is, if you are good enough and know what consistency is, you can use a 90 inch as well as a 100 inch.

  • Let me ask you, have you tried both STYLES?! Have you hit a one hander from over your head with a polarized racket against a ball with as much topspin and pace as Nadal generates? NO! THAT is nearly impossible, even if it is only head level. On clay the best you can pray for is to get a good serve/return so that he won't get a chance to hit a ball like that to your backhand. If you are a two hander, you don't have as many problems. Though for you I bet you can't even get that on your strings.

  • i play with same grips as rodger. :)

might as well emulate the best in the game.

  • I seriously doubt you even KNOW what grips he uses.

It's not impossible to hit a perfect topspin one hander with a continental grip, but that is definetally not a continental, but some pictures suggest the grip is between continental and eastern, maybe closer to eastern. Or maybe that was Sampras...

Anyway, Roger does not hit the sweetspot every time, or his unforced error count would be 0 every time and he would have 1-3 less forced errors a match.

  • i do not think u know everything, so stop acting like you do you shit head.

ps you can hit the sweet spot and stil hit it out...shit head.

Im sure everyone agrees with me on this.

  • no you are shit head. Roger Federer does hit frame a lot. You don't even get the point, dude. He is not describing eastern grip can't hit sweet spot, he is saying that Roger Federer hits his backhand a lot on the frame

  • lol The loser has no insult other than shithead. What did you learn in school? Oh sorry I forgot you were too stupid to realize public education is free.

Any pro that hits the sweetspot on a racket will NEVER hit it out. If you ever watch them practice you will see them rip balls and NEVER miss one. However in warm ups it's different for some reason.

  • Also, I doubt you even think, so stop acting like you can or even know what the word think even means.

And no decient player hits the sweetspot and still hits it out. I guess you just plain suck at tennis.

Roger needs a new frame. Something with a 105 inch head and maybe a lower swingweight with a higher static mass so that he doesn't misshit so many balls.

  • Are you talking to me or "kamalgikesk"?

    My comment was to "kamalgikesk".

  • I play with a 93 inch and let me tell you , the problem with big raquets is that they are quite unpredictable , if you hit the sweet spot the bounce pretty hard , but the closest you get to the edges the power decresses radicly !

With the smaller heads the power is more consistant on all areas of the raquet , is a mather of taste but I have gone from a 110 to now 93 and I like the 93 the best , of course it takes a degree of concentration to hit the sweet spot on such a smaller raquet.

  • yea its a eastern grip

  • ya right, he uses an eastern i believe

  • what is the grip that roger uses for his backhand topspin?

  • continental

  • continental is like practically impossible to use on a one-hander

  • wow!! great balance, anticipation, hand eye coordination, finesse..simply awesome

  • so... beautiful

  • roger=perfect
