ill like to have seen the dps do her in br blue with the white windows ,,,theres none done this away i cant understand why,,,we have 3 in green and 3 in blue but the blue ones are all standed.
Lovely two-tone green livery. Remember it well from the early-mid 60s. Hope you told that ill-mannered guy to get out of your way. There's always one.
Minor correction; 18 cylinders per engine, (6 banks of three). So 36 cylinders, double acting, that's 72 pistons! just writing it down is awesome. I remember them being phased out in the early '80s, being allowed up to 110mph to fit in with the new HSTs ; the fastest conventional loco hauled trains in the world, for a while.
Great sound, but, I seem to remember, as another comment mentioned the real voom-voom fluttering between the engines, God it was an awesome loco, I was on the footplate as a secondman during the late 70s at Haymarket, and we relieved a crew in Fife and brought the train back to edinburgh, the cab seemed so big! compared to the more usual 37s or 40s/45s Brush that we used more often, i had to shut down the heating boiler, between the engines, when crossing the Forth Bridge at idle, Rather loud!
I loved the deltics too and spent many a schoolday ! bunking off so I could go and see them arriveand depart from Kings Cross station.One nice driver let me see inside the cab with the engine running.- never forgot that ! Remember going on one up to Kings Lynn I think but a bit too young then (only 5) to appreciate them. Thanks for bringing back those memories
Indeed I often remember them at donny on a winters night howling away north, sometimes 2 - 4 miles away you could STILL here them. I do remember one friday when Meld 003 arrived on the new HUll Exec in the finsbury pk white roof look -that caused some excitement I'll tell you..Ta for posting this btw.....
I lived in Low Fell from 1969 to 1985, near The Gold Medal. One of the strongest memories of my childhood is lying in bed at night and listening to the sound of a Deltic on song. The sound on this is good, but when they were at high power the engines were slightly out of phase and you got a lovely woom-woom-woom as they charged by. I haven't heard that on any of the videos I found so far.
@cageordie thats right i live in allerdene and at night late on they used to bellow and growl past and honestly you could here it for a good 5 to 10 mins after it had sailed by i used to nod of to sleep to the song of the deltic, much missed now of coarse , theres nothing that can compare to a deltic song , i thought they would go on forever, i saw royal scots grey the outher week down on the ecml at lamesly and they sound a lot silenter than what they did, ahh the 70s
GOD THEY LOOK LIKE ANGELS BUILT THEM the only U.S diesel that is ''pretty'' are U.P.R.R'S ''centenieel'' class [witch are the biggest diesels in the world] but hardly ever were used plus they were designed with freight train looks not beauty like the deltic was and had 2 3,000 HP V16'S witch were uneconomic so now only about 5 exist presurved at U.P'S steam yard for backup power to the specal steam train's
They do but its very expensive to run on two, also they are designed to power one engine first, then open the other after notch 5 (i think). So you really only need it when you are on the main line.
i went up the belfry tower in bruge last week, and while filming the bells at the top chiming, about 5 people walked in my way, ITS THE MOST ANNOYING THING EVARRRR!!!! {except for getting hit by a bus}

Another correction-it is three banks of 6 cylinders each with 2 pistons-so 18 cylinders with 36 pistons for each engine.

I'm too young to remember the Deltics in service but think they are amazing. Look the best in this livery too imo.

Just listen to that power. I used to work near Abbots Ripton and those 55's used to come down the LNER full tilt. I'll never forget that sound!!

Why does someone ALWAYS insist on walking in shot? This happens to me all the time too.
Great sound though.
