We were there in March 2010 and we got as far as the rangers station and they made us turn around....95mph winds and ice on the roads! we're from Michigan whats a little ice?? Maybe next time
@dwags59 I'm from Toronto, so I hear you about a little ice. That said, icy roads in our neck of the woods generally don't come with hairpin turns and 10,000 foot drops!
@hisbigness So True!! LOL I think the highest point in Michigan is 1900 ft not 10,000!! And hairpin turns well maybe two or three. Just signed a contract for a condo at the Marriott Maui on Kaanapali so we'll be back in 2011 maybe we'll make the summit then.
K Thanks man! Do you recommend a good way to get up there? Rental Car, moped, tours? I am thinking of traveling to hawaii solo for a week and a half and visiting maui and oahu. Random question but any good hiking trails on either 3 islands you recommend? Im still nervous of traveling solo! Not sure if I should do it or not.
I've been to Hawaii alone a couple of times. Sure it's more fun to have someone to share it with, but if the choice is to go alone or not to go at all, to me it's an easy decision. Then again, I travel alone a fair bit, so I should admit I'm used to my own company.
As for the second part of your question, I'd recommend renting a car to get up Haleakala. On Maui you can also hike around the Iao Valley, but for me the greatest hiking experience there is the Sliding Sands trail down into the crater on Haleakala. Other-worldly. Honolulu is great for walking, but the only "hike" within the city would be to go up Diamond Head. There are some trails out by the Halona Blow Hole on the east shore, but I've not done them.
Well, you can bike DOWN the mountain (there are tour companies who arrange such things) and you can hike various trails AROUND the mountain, but going up? It's a very long, winding incline in low oxygen and there are no sidewalks. So it would be incredibly tiring and not very safe. Besides, the interesting hikes are inside the crater, not around the outer face.

are you allowed to hike up haleakala instead of driving? Or even take a bicycle up there? Thanks
