I am in awe of the quality of this piece. I think its time stop motion was revisited by the major companies and use it for a re-make of The Lost World. Having animated articulated toys and Aurora Pre-historic scenes models I think I might be inspired eneough to go and build a decent puppet myself
That is absolutely great work! The look and feel of it is perfect and captures the O'Brien / Harryhausen flavor. The slight bit of go-motion blurring to the allosaur adds to a contemporary stop-motion feel. Definitely not enough of this type of work being made these days. Please post more if you have it!
@gizmo102188 This is Mark Sullivan. The guy who created the matte paintings for Rain man and Lord of the rings to name a few and the stop-motion sequences for House 2 the second story.
We just need about another 89 minutes of this type of thing intercut with actors and we'd have a stop-motion dinosaur feature, and I don't think there's been one since PLANET OF THE DINOSAURS. I wish I could win the lottery. I'd hire a bunch of stop-motion animators to make a Harryhausen-type movie. It's been too long a season without rain in that regard. Fabulous work. I'm sure Ray would be pleased with it.
Rmir72, yes the allosaur was a "build up" type of model made by friend Rocco Gioffre. He glued pieces of foam rubber on to the armature. I hope to use the dimetrodon puppet in another project, someday..
I remeber that dimetrodon puppet when Marc posted pics of it on the SMA boards. Too bad you can't see all the detail in that puppet, its gorgeous. Fantastic short though, love the allosaurus as well. Was that build up too, or casted?

Hi Giz,
I used to buy Cinemagic magazine back in the '70's. It had some helpful articles about making stop motion puppets. A good source nowadays is

There is at lot of information in the puppet construction forum folders.
