how did you adjust your valves ? and whats your timing set at, I found the best way to adjust a hydrolic lifter is have the engine running with the valve cover off and loosen the rocker nut untill you hear a constant taping, slowly turn the nut untill the tapping noise is gone then turn the nut another 1/2 to 3/4 turn then move on to the next rocker
and by the sounds and looks of it your timing is also way out ( thats why you got the back fire through the carb , because the timing is to retarded
