fflegmo's right - i don't see why you can't use v's. everybody did back in the day. one thing i wouldn't put up with are plastic levers though, man i hated those when i was a kid..

be sure to adjust cable tension for pad wear, lubricate the cables and clean the rims regularly otherwise they will feel crap.
