Great demo...and since it was done in 2009 I have to cut u some extra slack because I think if u did this albeit very well done demo with the new Celestion Gold....the Gold would blow minds. The G-12 Vintage30 was my fav for years...until I got the new Gold. WOW...!!! Expensive but imho...worth every penny.
I feel like V30's have that upper mid range bite thats really good for bringing out tone.. but I feel like the G12T-75 is just really really smooth. Its hard to tell... hard to tell. Im looking at these speakers for a '74 Super Lead I just bought. Anyone have ANY suggestions?? Thanks!
I have a Traynor YCS-50, comes stock with a vintage 30, and I can say no complaints from me in any way, covers the right frequency spread for all my needs.
I picked up a marshall cab with 4x G12-k100, and after having played it for a year I can't say anything bad about it. I mostly play metal on it, but it sounds great for rock, and when I ran it through a marshall 1997 limited blues breaker you got insane blues tones (though, regular greenbacks would most likely sound better for blues.)
I am trying to decide between the vin 30 or the k 100. The h 30 will not work , 40watt amp. I have plenty of t75's looking for something different. have plenty of 70/80's and Eminence Lady Lucks. "Can't give them away" "No one will take Eminence speakers" I am leaning towards the k100.
@orcustrex Those Lady Luck speakers Eminence made, are to some other amp manufacturer's specs. The spec was: make these as cheap as you can. We don't care what they sound Like. Try an Eminence Wizard or Red, White and Blue before you go knocking them.
Yea, just got my new ENGL 212 V cab with two Vinatge 30's. I have listened to this again and I think they sound the best. I have done an AB test with my Marshall 1936 G12T-75 loaded cab and the Marshall sounds muddy and harsh. Vintage 30's ROCKKKKK !!!
Sooooooooooo helpful. I'm just in the market to chop out my Marshall 1936 cab with 2 x G12T-75's for an ENGL 2x12 with Vintage 30's. However after listening to this I think I prefer the G12T's on the Medium gain and the Vintage 30's on the high gain. thanks for posting this video
Vintage 30s to me sound brighter whereas the GT12T75 sound warmer. I'm considering going for a cab with two of each for a balanced sound. Thanks for sharing this. It helped a lot.
Once again, the much imitated, much maligned, Celestion Vintage 30 shows why it's the industry standard. Of course, it would be even more obvious playing with other instruments, as it's (alnico) voicing and wide range is unique. Thanks for the further evidence! I own a mojotone bv-30 in a JTM45 & it sounds like a piece of cardboard (to me) compared to the authentic V30.
@gonephishin77 The Celestion Greenback came out in the 60's it's called G12M25. M= Medium magnet 25= 25 watts. Eddie Van Halen used the original greenbacks.
The G12H30 has a Heavy magnet and is 30w, but I hate the spikey trebly shrillness of it.
The greenbacks lack the Vintage 30's thick grinding mids, but the 30s have an annoying high mid spike with some amps.
I am just about to order a warehouse guitar speaker ET65 to pair with my greenback or vintage 30.

@Riveraprod I am thinking about upgrading 4 cheap stock speakers with G12T-75's but I keep hearing from others who have used them with high gain amps that they are too bright and scooped. In this video the 75's sound the least bright and actually fairly smooth, so?
Guys guys, please rather than everyone stating which speaker 'they' think is the best, (everyone will think that what they own or work with is) etc. Please address the fact that each different speaker is suited to a different application/style so unless were talking seriously inferior components being matched up against these speakers lets assume each speaker is like a specific tool and should be used for the correct job. Just my two cents.
the engineer will not only pick the best mic for the sound but adjust it accordingly(I cant believe Im actually explaining this).
Doing all these things to achieve the best sound--V30 have won out the most in studios. My point is...I dont mind people being novices in addressing the sound they are hearing...but these proud boastful proclamations by people who dont know what they are talking about just make everyone dumber.
Anyone who says V30's arent good is just talkin out their arse and has no experiencing with cabinets in real world use.. V30's are used by everybody for a reason.
The speakers impression is predicated on the amp heads settings. In these clips the K100 fits the heads dialed in settings the best.--Change those settings and another speaker would win. Anyone with experience knows that--anyone who is just a pretender doesnt--hence the infantile comments here.
I like the vintage 30 mostly because it has a nice mid-voiced tonal quality, my 2nd favourite is the 70th anniversary G12h, 3rd is the G12t-75 and 4th is the k100.
Very nice demo. I'm somewhere between V30 and the 75's. I have a Mesa 2x12 with v30's and it seems a bit harsh. most people say the 75's are harsher than v30's, but in this demo that's not the case. I'll try to find a used marshall to test out the 75s
T75 has the best bass response, fat but not flubby, tight but not overbearing. Good smooth highs too, where the V-30 might have been brash (not on these settings, but with a brighter amp and brighter EQ settings) and even a little thin if you don't have a very well balanced amp with a flat response. In that case, V-30s can add some character, but most "vintage" style amps (like my PV Classic-30) would make the best crunch-chords or high-gain power-chords with T-75s. 4 of them. Or no, 8 of them!
I like the V-30s for lead, but I couldn't play rhythm guitar through them. I have tried, and it drowns out the vocals unless you scoop the mids completely, which defeats the purpose of using a V-30. I am very impressed with the T-75, but I don't know if I'd play lead through it, it isn't "up-front" enough when scaling and playing melodies. PERFECT for rhythm guitar though. Good demo, thanks.
G12T-75 work best for me, I have tried K100s and v30s and I find I have to use my eq just get rid of the high mid dominance rather that use it to shape my tone, the G12T-75s are naturally closer to my chosen tone allowing me to use the eq to tweak my sound
never tried the G12H heritage speakers but they do sound nice
really great demo guys, could i ask what kinda cab that is?? is it a ported model?? closed/open back?? how does a ported cab sound to a regular closed back cab?? more bass/bottom/smoother highs etc etc???
sorry for so many questions but you guys really seem to know what yer doing...
Couldn't agree more, I put 2 eminence governors (v30 clones) in x-pattern with 2 g12t75's and had to run my amp with full bass and mid with no treble and it still sounded thin imo. Just putting the other 2 g12's back in.
@BreakItDown5150 in this it sounds fuller and has more bottom end, the 75 feels like it's lacking something. just my opinion though. my preference on here is the v30
LOL thats not high gain.... and the rolled the mids way down.... thats kind of important with these speakers and even more important for the AB.... v30s have a great low end and amazing mids i play heavier stuff but i normally put the lows and highs about 12 o clock and roll the mids up.. sounds amazing use my axe fx ultra.
Thanks so much for posting this! I'm trying to fix my harsh and sterile sounding lead tone that I'm getting from my 2x12 with a Vintage 30 and Greenback... this clip has convinced my it is the Vintage 30s fault so now the G12H30 that I replaced (because I thought it was the harsh speaker) with the Greenback will go back in and I'll hear the G12H30 + Greenback combo for the first time. This clip is invaluable!!!!
You should try just replacing the greenback with the g12h30. I hear where the v30's fail, is where the g12h30 shines, and put together you get an awesome setup! just what i've heard though =)
The V30 is a classic, and sounded fantastic and sweet, its sort of an immediate go-to, though the bottom end doesn't quite catch me. But that G12T-75 grew on me & stole my heart. Normally I wouldn't like the scooped nature of the Celestion 75 watters, but man that one had some big ol brass balls danglin under there..you hear the WHACK that G12T has?! So lovely...
Vintage 30s have my vote. Their's a reason a lot of the highest quality cabs use em. Bogner, Marshall, Mesa, Blackstar, Rivera, and Orange (to name a few) all feature em in their cabs. Just classic
@jacobtheguitarfreak im deffo buying a vintage 30 for my peavey classic, just need to decide on tubes now....been looking at 3 jj tesla preamp and 4 mesa boogie or maybe all jj tesla...any help and advice would be much appreciated!!! but deffo buying that vintage 30!!!
I've never messed with a Peavey Classic, so I'm not really sure. Is there some kinda Peavey forum somewhere? If there is, I'm sure they have plenty of info on it. The Vintage 30 sounds like a great choice for that amp btw
Definitely go with all jj tesla's over mesa. If you had the choice between only retubing your amp or changing your speaker...get the speaker (especially the vintage 30) it will improve your sound ten fold over whatever you have now (and I don't even know what you have!) I was always looking to change my sound and figure out why it wasn't just "right" so I changed tubes, guitar pickups, etc., then I got this speaker...and BLAM...everything sounded AMAZING!!!
@HRcircut85 thank you very very much for taking time to give me advice!!!....im deffo getting the vintage 30 and after a convo with the guy from hotrox uk, he said if you want proven quality and an excellent tube go for jj's. He could of easily talked me to a more expensive set but he said same as you, go for jj's. so im ordering the vintage 30 and a complete set of jj's 2moz.... ; ) .....thanx for advice my friend!!!! take care.
@tabulaerasae82 Carefull, JJ's are brittle and dark sounding and are not called or labeled "Tesla". Even Bob at Euro Tuubes can tell you that.. You can argue all day about tubes but when it comes to pre amp, you can beat Tung Sol's hands down..
@dbenc It depends on the amp. I tried a lot of different 12ax7's in a few amps, especially my modded Peavey 5150 combo. Let my ears decide, not forums or others opinions. I like those Tungsol's in one of the middle positions but not V1 or V2 because they are too bright and brittle when pushed. Great for a dark sounding amp, but the JJ's are good for high gain, bright amps. I don't know much about the Tesla tubes. I like the V30 tone in this video BTW.
@ctalbert1 You are right, you should let your ears decide. However I totally disagree regarding Tung-Sols in the middle. In my Marshall I prefer Tung-Sols in V1 and V2 because they are the gain stages. And Tung Sols reputation is 'hi-gain" ..NOS tubes in V3 cathode follower and V4 phase inverter. But thats a Marshall though. And I've tried every tube out there. To each there own. IMO JJ's aren't great in most amps. Esp marshalls. Better in mic pre's and such. JJ's reputation is very dark.
@dbenc It's been a while since I had a Marshall, but Tung Sol's prob do sound good in them. I think the JJ's do well in 5150's and some other 6L6 powered amps because they can tame some of that "fizzyness" those amps have. The 5150 owners that like a lot of presence & treble do like the Tung Sols though. I also like the Sovtek LPS in the phase inverter, as it balanced out the treble response even more, and I bet it would also sound good in most Marshall's PI position.
I had no idea how much speakers could affect your tone. People spend thousands on new amps, guitars, pickups w/e to improve their tone. Now I know a good speaker change is all you need.
This was a great help. Please add a big Fender clean sound on a future test. I decided on the Vintage 30 for my 1964 Blonde Bassman 2 x 12 cab. I'm not looking for a Marshall sound. I will let you know how they match up in about a week.
The V30s sound great for leads but not so great for rhythm tones with the spikey highs. I have been using V-30s for years and they work better with some amps and cab combinations than others. I like the K100 for the rhythm tones.
Awesome video!!!!, you actually made me change my mind, i was going for a 1960 marshall gabinet with g12t but now i decided to get the one with v30, thaks a lot man!!!
@juanca2040 IN A LIVE SITUATION THE MARSHALL 1960 A CAB HAS G12T75 AND HAS MODERN HIGH GAIN TONE. IF U USE THE V30 IN METAL BAND ON STAGE THERE WILL BE NO LOW END AND I SOUNDS LIKE AN AMP WITH NO BOTTOM END PRETTY DAMN SAD U THINK THE G12T75 WERE BUILT FOR THE NEWER MODERN HIGH GAIN AMPS . THIS TEST I NICE BUT PUT 4 IN A CAB OF EACH THEN COMPARE
yes but i dont pay metaL so i dont care about that, i had made de 1on1 test, and the v30 got attitude, the g12t sounds more "modern" but thats why the v30 are VINTAGE, i stiLL prefer v30
V30, the others just wouldnt cut through anywhere near as much live. Ive always had trouble cutting through live and im currently changing my rig so I dont have to worry about it anymore.. had been using G12T75's but its clear that they have a serious mid scoop going on.. maybe okay in a studio but will just wont do it live.
@synth002 DO U USE LIVE THE G12T75 I DO I HAVE A ENGL PWERBALLA ND MESA RECTIFIER AND MY TONE IS SEARING HOT AND THE MIDS ARE THERE U HAVE TO USE THE AMPS EQ AND PUT A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF MID AND BACK OFF THE LOWS ATINY BIT AND BOOM THE BADDEST MODERN HIGH GAIN SPEAKER AND CUTTING MODERN EDGE GAIN AND TONE
@metalmusiqcrzy - I know how to play & how to EQ an amp, lol. Ive used the G12T75 for a couple of years live must have played around 100 shows with them. sounds great at home or when im playing by myself onstage but the second the other guitarist turns on his marshall's all you hear is that.. even if I turn up louder. I have used the G12T75 with peavey valveking & now peavey 5150.
Thank you for this video. You enabled me to make a decision between the v30's and G1230's....I would not have been able to compare them side beside, so you saved me a lot of anxiety over this choice.
I like Vintage 30s most when they are brand new. Once they are broken in, they sound muffled and the highs just don't sparkle the same :(

Rizzy55 1 year ago
Anyone who says V30's arent good is just talkin out their arse and has no experiencing with cabinets in real world use.. V30's are used by everybody for a reason.
The speakers impression is predicated on the amp heads settings. In these clips the K100 fits the heads dialed in settings the best.--Change those settings and another speaker would win. Anyone with experience knows that--anyone who is just a pretender doesnt--hence the infantile comments here.
Rizzy55 1 year ago
I like the vintage 30 mostly because it has a nice mid-voiced tonal quality, my 2nd favourite is the 70th anniversary G12h, 3rd is the G12t-75 and 4th is the k100.
Nice video very informative!

Very nice demo. I'm somewhere between V30 and the 75's. I have a Mesa 2x12 with v30's and it seems a bit harsh. most people say the 75's are harsher than v30's, but in this demo that's not the case. I'll try to find a used marshall to test out the 75s
GuitarRocks23455 1 year ago
Do you think you could do a test with the Celestion Gold and Blue?
stretch90 1 year ago

@BreakItDown5150
Couldn't agree more, I put 2 eminence governors (v30 clones) in x-pattern with 2 g12t75's and had to run my amp with full bass and mid with no treble and it still sounded thin imo. Just putting the other 2 g12's back in.
stratznhatz 1 year ago
@BreakItDown5150 over rated? how do you mean everybody uses them, i wonder why, maybe its because they sound good?
TheLukeDaniel 1 year ago

StratMatt777 2 years ago

Just classic
jacobtheguitarfreak 2 years ago 4
@jacobtheguitarfreak im deffo buying a vintage 30 for my peavey classic, just need to decide on tubes now....been looking at 3 jj tesla preamp and 4 mesa boogie or maybe all jj tesla...any help and advice would be much appreciated!!! but deffo buying that vintage 30!!!
tabulaerasae82 2 years ago
I've never messed with a Peavey Classic, so I'm not really sure. Is there some kinda Peavey forum somewhere? If there is, I'm sure they have plenty of info on it. The Vintage 30 sounds like a great choice for that amp btw
jacobtheguitarfreak 2 years ago
Definitely go with all jj tesla's over mesa. If you had the choice between only retubing your amp or changing your speaker...get the speaker (especially the vintage 30) it will improve your sound ten fold over whatever you have now (and I don't even know what you have!) I was always looking to change my sound and figure out why it wasn't just "right" so I changed tubes, guitar pickups, etc., then I got this speaker...and BLAM...everything sounded AMAZING!!!
HRcircut85 2 years ago
@HRcircut85 thank you very very much for taking time to give me advice!!!....im deffo getting the vintage 30 and after a convo with the guy from hotrox uk, he said if you want proven quality and an excellent tube go for jj's. He could of easily talked me to a more expensive set but he said same as you, go for jj's. so im ordering the vintage 30 and a complete set of jj's 2moz.... ; ) .....thanx for advice my friend!!!! take care.
tabulaerasae82 2 years ago
No prob buddy. Take care
HRcircut85 2 years ago
@tabulaerasae82 Carefull, JJ's are brittle and dark sounding and are not called or labeled "Tesla". Even Bob at Euro Tuubes can tell you that.. You can argue all day about tubes but when it comes to pre amp, you can beat Tung Sol's hands down..
dbenc 2 years ago
@dbenc It depends on the amp. I tried a lot of different 12ax7's in a few amps, especially my modded Peavey 5150 combo. Let my ears decide, not forums or others opinions. I like those Tungsol's in one of the middle positions but not V1 or V2 because they are too bright and brittle when pushed. Great for a dark sounding amp, but the JJ's are good for high gain, bright amps. I don't know much about the Tesla tubes. I like the V30 tone in this video BTW.
ctalbert1 1 year ago
@ctalbert1 You are right, you should let your ears decide. However I totally disagree regarding Tung-Sols in the middle. In my Marshall I prefer Tung-Sols in V1 and V2 because they are the gain stages. And Tung Sols reputation is 'hi-gain" ..NOS tubes in V3 cathode follower and V4 phase inverter. But thats a Marshall though. And I've tried every tube out there. To each there own. IMO JJ's aren't great in most amps. Esp marshalls. Better in mic pre's and such. JJ's reputation is very dark.
dbenc 1 year ago

Now I know a good speaker change is all you need.
prodigy179 2 years ago 2
This was a great help. Please add a big Fender clean sound on a future test. I decided on the Vintage 30 for my 1964 Blonde Bassman 2 x 12 cab. I'm not looking for a Marshall sound. I will let you know how they match up in about a week.

The V30s sound great for leads but not so great for rhythm tones with the spikey highs. I have been using V-30s for years and they work better with some amps and cab combinations than others. I like the K100 for the rhythm tones.

Awesome video!!!!, you actually made me change my mind, i was going for a 1960 marshall gabinet with g12t but now i decided to get the one with v30, thaks a lot man!!!
juanca2040 2 years ago
@juanca2040 IN A LIVE SITUATION THE MARSHALL 1960 A CAB HAS G12T75 AND HAS MODERN HIGH GAIN TONE. IF U USE THE V30 IN METAL BAND ON STAGE THERE WILL BE NO LOW END AND I SOUNDS LIKE AN AMP WITH NO BOTTOM END PRETTY DAMN SAD U THINK THE G12T75 WERE BUILT FOR THE NEWER MODERN HIGH GAIN AMPS . THIS TEST I NICE BUT PUT 4 IN A CAB OF EACH THEN COMPARE
metalmusiqcrzy 2 years ago
yes but i dont pay metaL so i dont care about that, i had made de 1on1 test, and the v30 got attitude, the g12t sounds more "modern" but thats why the v30 are VINTAGE, i stiLL prefer v30
juanca2040 2 years ago
V30, the others just wouldnt cut through anywhere near as much live. Ive always had trouble cutting through live and im currently changing my rig so I dont have to worry about it anymore.. had been using G12T75's but its clear that they have a serious mid scoop going on.. maybe okay in a studio but will just wont do it live.
synth002 2 years ago
@synth002 DO U USE LIVE THE G12T75 I DO I HAVE A ENGL PWERBALLA ND MESA RECTIFIER AND MY TONE IS SEARING HOT AND THE MIDS ARE THERE U HAVE TO USE THE AMPS EQ AND PUT A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF MID AND BACK OFF THE LOWS ATINY BIT AND BOOM THE BADDEST MODERN HIGH GAIN SPEAKER AND CUTTING MODERN EDGE GAIN AND TONE
metalmusiqcrzy 2 years ago
@metalmusiqcrzy - I know how to play & how to EQ an amp, lol. Ive used the G12T75 for a couple of years live must have played around 100 shows with them. sounds great at home or when im playing by myself onstage but the second the other guitarist turns on his marshall's all you hear is that.. even if I turn up louder. I have used the G12T75 with peavey valveking & now peavey 5150.
synth002 2 years ago
@metalmusiqcrzy - I think it has a lot to do with the amps also, both are way too dark really.. switching to marshall, then cornford soon. Oh well!
synth002 2 years ago
Thank you for this video. You enabled me to make a decision between the v30's and G1230's....I would not have been able to compare them side beside, so you saved me a lot of anxiety over this choice.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
V30 is NOT mid-rangey like most people say but high-mids scooped and for that is brittle in highs.
G12T75 is NOT mid scooped like most people say : not extended in highs and middy.
G12H is nice in all guitar freqs : clear and rounded at the same time.
K100 is very similar to G12T75.
All this test in this video, gives truth to my personal tests.
