How in the name of God does one work on a consensus with a GOP that's against any reform from day one? What a recipe for failure. I was hoping for an FDR or LBJ in Obama,who had the force of will to get things done. I wanted to scream when I saw Obama give his stump speech 3 days ago: Where was this energy/passion last summer when he allowed the Tea Baggers to take control of the health care debate? Obama has botched historic opportunities and for that I am boiling mad.

I'm not sure how "empathy" could have stopped teabaggers from seizing control of the healthcare debate, so I can't answer that question. The hatred of Obama was very rapid on both the left and the right, and I ended up losing friends of both persuasions. Actually, I don't see America getting out of this intact. There is no consensus in America about politics, and there is only rage and anger, hatred and insult. Democracy cannot function with factions determined to prevent it from working.
