If I remember correctly (it's been about forty years since I heard this); Nanker Phelge stood for both Mick and Keith and may have been the equivalent of a Hollywood director's Allan Smithee. As I remember, a nanker over there was what we might call a nerd or doofus.
The debut album got the Stones prominent support - Gene Pitney, Phil Spector helped by Gene Piano and Phil maracas in "Little by little" played, the other producer Andrew Loog Oldham attacked again in 1963 because of his protruding chin by him from the band's founding member Ian Stewart crowded back, which "Tell me" and "Can I get a witness" at the piano, "Now I've got a witness" and "You can make it" played the organ. The composer "Phelge" is nothing but the pseudonym of Mick Jagger!
My fave band ever-the MickTaylor years, were pretty awful early on, and they admitted it. In fact this first Stones album-the British one- wasn't a Stones record. It was a COVER band's record. Mick sings ONE original on it. ONE. (On this, it sounds like, NO drums or axe-cept a horrible Brian - and at 1:25 even the tambourine screws up. The TAMBOU-FRIGGIN-RINE.). Lovyas anyways.
@PAULLONDEN Thanks..but.. yeah, mighta-been a wee- bit high that night. They became better as soon as Mick n Keith started writing, but I like the Jimmy Miller-Mick Taylor years best.
sorry it took so long to connect, but glad to favor this one, thanks for passing along..... it's a great song for the moonlight skate at the rink.. ohyeah
On the album, the full name of this song is: "Now I've Got a Witness (Like Uncle Gene and Uncle Phil). Gene Pitney and Phil Spector played on that first album.

Listen to Andrew's Blues on YT. You'll not believe the lyrics. Though I've no idea why it wasn't released....

@Kelly14UK I checked Andrew's Blues out and love it! It's one of the stones funniest songs :P
Love the organ on Now I've Got a Witness, and of course the harmonica playing by the late great Brian Jones.
