I think it's a shame that 99.9% of interviewers don't have an appreciation for Bowie's sense of humour, he does have a cheeky and playful personality, but for some reason they want to make him out to be this ultra serious behemoth with an air of inaccessibility.
Also, I think many interviewers forget that 'stars' have been asked the same questions over and over again and they are naturally going to get bored easily, most of them don't even try to be interesting or different.
ive never really liked molly meldrum. he seems too uptight, maybe a bit too businessman like? he doesnt get jokes or smile, i kinda feel sorry for the people he interviews.
I once saw a 2002 interview by some german TV man. That was something! The man obviously was not interested in Bowie at all, and actually knew nothing about him. And he asked a selection of the most standard questions that Bowie has ever been asked. In addition to that, he was just so dumb (and I am serious when I say this), so dull and boring, and, on the top of it, he was so incredibly serious.
In the beginning Bowie tried to joke just to lighten the mood a bit, but the man didn't smile even once. Then he asked Bowie something like - whether he is the same in real life as on stage, and Bowie said something like (with a completely straight face) - no, this is my public persona (he was quite plainly dressed, and looked "very normal''), but at home I wear Ziggy makeup, high heels and costumes.
The interviewer didn't even smile, so that was Bowie's last attempt to "crack the ice" (or, rather, stone). After that he started to look openly bored, and even looked at his watch once. I've seen him bored in other interviews, but I had never seen him so bored that he would look into his watch without even trying to hide it. It looked like the interviewer didn't even notice it, though.
Why are you people getting so upset about this? The thing about Molly Meldrum was that he wasn't a journalist, so his interviews were very shallow, but he was a great supporter of new acts - particularly Australian - and for that, he deserves some respect. But I agree that he wasn't really qualified to take on someone as complex and literate as Bowie.
I agree sawbird. Thanks ever so much for this. You are right. There is no need for people to get so worked up. Why get so precious about an interview. I have been a Bowie fan since the early days and I can be wholly critical when someone does not get the facts right or know Bowie's history and back catalogue inside out but it is obvious to me that this guy is promoting Bowie's music/legacy and comes across as quite a fan. He is talking to him, not conducting research for a PhD.
...and by the way, your stupid comment contradicted your own argument, and you've actually proved what the person you were arguing against said(which anyone can plainly see). Quit while you're ahead, you're NOT understanding anything here, and that's proven by the dribble you wrote. Don't waste people's time with your completely out of context nonsense. Perhaps it's a language thing, if so try communicating in a language that you understand.
OMG! that is the most funniest thing ever when he ripped the list 5.45 LOL *ROLLIN ON THE FLOOR LAUGHIN!* I cant get over it omg i am gonna be laughin at that 4 at least a month! LOL!
While they're discussing FAME, Molly begins to ask "have you heard John Lennon's..."...probably going to say Double Fantasy (album). In retrospect, this would have been an interesting question given the context of place and time (Oct 1980, NYC).
I love how David smiles a lot, he has the most beautiful smile ever I love him! He is so hot and so amazing. I love hearing him talk it makes me happy! David is so awesome!
The interviewer is a friggin' dick, he makes the most idiotic remarks, and keeps interupting David alot. David's taking the mickey as usual(sassy little bugger)I love him.
Pity you are a clueless, celebrity worshipping, nationalistic twit, THIS interviewer is embarssingly inept, nevermind "important" in journalistic terms, if you seriously can't discern that the interviewer is a hack, you clearly have no standards, and I highly doubt that this is the best Australis has to offer.
Ian Alexander "Molly" Meldrum OAM (born 29 January 1946 in Orbost, Victoria) is an Australian popular music critic, journalist, record producer, and musical entrepreneur, best known as talent co-ordinator, on-air interviewer and music news presenter on the now defunct popular music program Countdown and widely recognised for his trademark Akubra hat, which he has regularly worn in public since the 1970s.
I'm sorry if this offends you but I have to ask...Are you mentally challenged aka retarded? Stop regurgitating your latest google search bud, you obviously don't understand what's going on, so you're just arguing with yourself. This interviewer is OBVIOUSLY an idiot, and clearly an ignorant moron, if he's a mainstream industry schmo, no surprise there. Most viewers who have seen this "get it" so stop arguing about things you don't understand.Chew on something more your size.
Hey, Chilling, take a hit on the bong brother, I just pointing out that Mollie Meldrum might not be the best interviewer on the planet, but was responsible for getting Aussie music onto the airwaves through Countdown then onto the world stage. He is a legend. He deserves some respect.
Does anyone get a vibe that the Brian Kinney character from QAF was influenced by this era of Bowie- I mean their resemblance isn't just looks but also attitude here.
Thank you Sawbird ! It's always so interesting to listen David .Fascinating! I'm great fan and this period of his career is my favourite ( 1976-1980).I regret ,but I was born in 1977,shortly after ''Heroes' album was released.Love David!
I ABSOLUTELY ADORE THIS BOWIE MUSIC PERIOD! :D

i dunno...i think the interview is decent. he just goes thru the albums and lets Bowie talk about it...
he is not interupting or asking dumb question.
I have followed Bowie since seeing him in 83, and seen MUCH worse!

Bowie always seems kinda bored when he talks to Molly, like in another interview in Sydney just before "Lets Dance" came out.
He gets distracted by looking at a boat lol.
But still a good interview, very intresting to hear what he had to say about his past albums.
And I love the eyeliner on him.

You should see Bryan Ferry's reaction to Molly. Trying his best not to openly mock him, but it's written all over his face.
