@7deepbreaths It also wouldn't have made practical sense to have Kato lose to Robin, since the idea of the crossover was to have Batman fans watch Green Hornet. They wouldn't be inclined to watch if he lost.

I think it must be some sort of Batman 'Biography'. Many of the 'Biography' shows were hosted by Peter Graves. Might be available to view online somewhere.
I agree with Norseleague. Both of those shows were silly and exaggerated. Why would Bruce suddenly assume a fight between two comic book characters should now be taken seriously?
@1:42 "Faster than a speeding bullet" Obviously Van Williams had been around Bruce enough at that point to see what the whole world eventually got to see. Bruce was The Man!
yeah-kato would easily beat Robin but why take it so seriously? It was only a silly tv show actually ridiculing batman and Robin AND the green Hornet and kato...
Robin's background: he was raised as a trapeze artist at a very young age (acrobat, split-second timing skills, great upper body strength, etc.). And trained as a young teen by The Batman in fighting.
thats just not true...Burt Ward held a brown belt in Karate and the two of them lived in the same apartment buildings in real life and often spared with each other.
where you there? How do you know? You just assume...again, Burt Ward wrote in his book that their fight scene was nothing but a watered down, scaled down version of their many sparings.
@3dartistguy Burt Ward held a brown belt in Karate? Well Damn, I forgot that having a Brown belt put anyone in the same league as Bruce Lee.
I've seen even Yellow Belts spar and dominate Brown Belts. Having a higher ranking belt reflects the techniques you apparently "know" it is not a reflection on your skill.
But Kato is not Bruce Lee. If he were, he sure as heck wouldn't be working as a chauffeur.
Robin early in his career would be a match for Kato but you can't judge this fight from the 1960s version of the show, esp. since they were only TV actors.
its a tv show. In the cartoons robin might have won. But there was a character that even Batman couldnt handle. He lost and was losing the second i believe. Bronze Tiger.
RustyNinja and infinera06, for the record, both Bruce and David came from famous acting families and second they are pretty much idols to many people. I for one like both of them not just for there acting abilities, but for there martial arts backgrounds. Also, i met Adam West (Batman) on August 22nd 2009 and he said that working with Bruce was an incredible experience. If that's not saying something then what is?
Lol, not sure how it can be foresight if you are referring to something which happened in the past and making judgements based upon knowledge of what already happened. That would be hindsight. Easy to sound like the prophet when you already know the answers. Also screaming at everyone who does not agree with you does little for your cause. I agree with you that Bruce Lee was not a better actor than Carradine, but you still dont know how it would have come out. Guess all you want.
The problem here is very simple. There is no suspension on reality here. Bruce Lee was Kato and every knew it, and Burt Ward would be a smear. Robin and someone else being Kato might have saved the Green Hornet's show; OR just change the whole concept like in "Superman vs Ali". Bruce Lee was too big for TV.
GOODNESSlll look at that round house kick bruce delivers at 3:00 Robins face would have been ripped off. His flesh would have been barely hanging onto his chin and nose. He would have been eitha knocked out or his face knocked off. ;P
I think this is the historic reason for Robin in the DC universe being such a hellbent martial artist = his fought with Bruce Lee was like an urban myth for many generations
PS: believe it or not Sammo Kam Po fought Bruce Lee for real in his youth
It is amazing to me that American TV producers were not smart enough to give Bruce Lee his on TV show.
Can you imagine if they had given Bruce the lead role in the show "Kung Fu" instead of David Carradine??? They would have had a monster hit that would still be top-rated while playing in reruns today.
Slighting Bruce just because he was Asian has to be the single biggest bonehead decision ever made in the history of television.
KUNG FU WAS a big hit! David Carradine was a much better actor than Bruce Lee. If Bruce got the role as Caine, he wouldn't have been the superstar he ultimately became. So everything worked out, except for his untimely death, of course.
Kung Fu wasn't a Hit, compare to Bruce's first movie "the big boss" it wipe kung fu out of this world. And your compare David Carradine to Bruce lee? You got to be joking right? Even in acting wise Bruce was better, why do you think to this day people still try to copy him so much compare to David Carradine?
The only thin Kung Fu did was prove to us how racist hollywood was.
Firstly, RIP David Carradine. Secondly, Kung Fu was a highly rated TV show and was nominated for an Emmy for best show. David Carradine was also nominated for best actor that year. There is no comparison between Carradine and Bruce Lee. Carradine was a very good actor, not a fighter. Bruce was fighter, not a good actor. If you think Bruce Lee is a better actor, you are either biased or simply don't know what good acting is. People emulate Bruce Lee 's fighting antics, not his acting! Fool!
DUDE. I am a film director. Bruce Lee had charisma that was untouched by any mfilm star of the 70's. If Carradine was so great, why didn't his films break box office records like Bruce Lee? Bruce Lee CHANGED the film industry. Carradine made his name in B movies like DEATH RACE 2000! UH, HELLLOOOO? Check yourself, you have a poor process of evaluating actors. PUHLEASE!!!
YOU...a film director?!!! LOL! Your naivete shows that you wish you are a legitimate director! Bruce Lee was a phenomenal fighter who just happened to be popular in the midst of a kung fu fad in the early 70's. Good actors don't necessarily equate to box office records. Carradine was nominated for numerous acting awards; Bruce Lee NONE! Bruce was a caricature. YOU simply don't know what good acting is! Quit exaggerating Bruce Lee's achievements! He did NOT change the film industry!
If he didn't change the film industry, why, almost 40 years after his death, are people still imitating him, making moives of him, and debating him? Once Carradine bit the dust, oops! End of story. Get a clue. There are no David Carradine imitators, and no box office recrods being smashed by anyone named Carradine. Carradine's entire family MEMBERS were B grade actors period. You need a mental evaluation. BTW, how many films do you have in distribution? I have three, so try again jerk weed.
I think you are confusing ICONIC and REVOLUTIONARY. In my world, "changing the film industry forever" is something that applies only to the people who invented sound, color, and CGA. You're definition is simply not correct. It's like saying Buddy Holly changed the recording industry forever. Imagine B.L. never existed, the film industry would still be what it is. What he is is iconic, and legendary after his premature death. People imitate him because he is an icon. .MORE...
People make movies of him mostly because of exploitation. I don't know how old you are, but I was around since the 50's, so I lived through the B.L. arrival and departure. He is bigger now than when he was alive. No one ever said he was a great actor, because he was not. Carradine was not an icon, hence...no imitators. What are the names of your films; I like to see them. BTW, I hope your film-making talent's better than your debating skill, which reeks of immaturity, irrelevance + ignorance.
Although Kung Fu did take off, you are speculating on something that didnt have a chance to happen. You don't know if Kung Fu would have been better or worse with Bruce Lee in it or if he would not have become the superstar he became. I would argue more exposure would HAVE MEANT he probably would have been a bigger star. Bruce Lee would have capitalized on it. He was driven.. pure and simple.
YOU may not know whether KUNG FU would have been better or worse with Bruce Lee as Caine. I DO!! It would have stunk! Further, TV actors don't become global superstars! And neither does over-exposure! In fact, his premature death was the main reason he's recognized as a legend today...aka James Dean. Otherwise, Bruce Lee, along with the kung fu fad of the early 70's would have simply faded into history as an era of poorly produced movies with bad acting. I still cringe when I watch Bruce "act."
It still speculation. Hindsight is ALWAYS 20/20. While I agree that David Carradine was a better actor, I find it silly that you are able to say with absolute certainty about what might have been. Bruce's acting wasnt the greatest, but many people wanted to see him of his kung fu. Who is to say that his acting would not have become better. You are arguing from a very very one sided point of view. and proclaiming your view as the absolutely authority on the matter. It's really quite comical.
It's not speculation. It's called foresight, which the producers of Kung Fu apparently had in employing Carradine for the role of Caine instead of BL. Kung Fu was a serious drama that was superbly scripted. The role required subtle acting and line delivery. BL simply was not right for that role. He was perfect for Kato (no real acting involved...very few lines). The role of Caine was in complete opposite of Kato. What's comical is that people here are so blinded through their idolatry of BL!
The day they make David Carradine Biopics, and entire cultures adapt part of their popular culture because of his influence, then I'll listen to this idiocy. By the way smart guy, when interviewed back in 1975 regarding his role in Kung Fu, David Carradine himself said"I don't know any kung fu, I'm not a martial artist man, I am a dancer." yeah, some film icon. Dude was so high didn't even take acting or martial arts seriously, just out for the paycheck. Case closed.
Are you dense? I said Carradine was NOT an icon. And no one said Carradine was a fighter. Yet, he was convincing in his role as Caine because of his acting ability. As for YOU, Mr. Film Maker....beating off in front of the PC cam and uploading it to YouPorn does not qualify yourself to be a film maker and distributor! HAHHAHAHHAHHA
You know, I'll bet most of those actors on medical shows aren't even real doctors! They might not even take the study of medicine seriously! They might be "doing their jobs"?
I say it right in the posting. NETWORK EXECUTIVES told him he was too short to star in a Western ("KUNG FU"). It is NOT my opinion!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@Neil6000 i felt that LEE was much better off returning to Hong Kong to his early yrs. there he became an internaional superstar. if he had stayed on TV Lee would have become typecast. the HK producers treated him better. they remembered him as a child actor & of course KATO.****
This just a wild guess but I think Bruce Lee would have rather enjoyed fame and money in the U.S. WHILE HE WAS STILL ALIVE!!! You people in here are too funny!
I agree with you - Kung Fu would have been a HUGE hit had Bruce Lee been given the lead role - he was born to play that part. The TV producers messed up.
Other than the Green Hornet TV series, which was very short-lived, Lee had very little exposure in the U.S. before he died. His biggest hit movie in the U.S., "Enter the Dragon" was not released until after his death. While Bruce is remembered as a legend, he could have been so much bigger in the U.S. while he was still alive.
I love how the dopey MALE Crackers are chuckling when describing Bruce Lee's style of Martial Arts (1:20). How typically smug and ignorant, while displaying their pathetic jealously. Bruce Lee's a legend and the Batman actor is a trivia question.
@ANCIENTMYS lol if only you knew what that word really means , your the one whos pathetic. bruce lee wouldn't even waste his time with fools like that because he knows he's lighyears ahead of them .
@TenteixSaigo you have never heard someone use that phrase before? how about "his mind is going a mile minute" ok light years ahead Definition Technologically advanced. Clearly better than the rest. Category: Idiom Semantic: advance, best, better Usage of “light years ahead” The design for the android is light years ahead of its time. I don't know why she was promoted instead of you. You are light years ahead of her in all aspects at work. do you get it now?
I remember this from the A&E biography: Bruce Lee, the original one with that old guy as the narrator. I can't quite catch his name but if anyone has it posted on youtube would be great.
van williams was right bruce was faster than a bullet.i read on the web when they were doing scenes in the green hornet they told to bruce that he had to slow the movments because he was so fast they can´t follow him with camara.
Granted he was fast, immensly fast and Edgarandrea is right they did have to make him slow down because he moved faster than the fps could account for his movements.
But he still wasn't faster than a speeding bullet. I could make a really innapropriate joke about it being a more useful skill for Brandon to have adopted but i wont.
Yes I know it's a figure of speech, its probably one of the most commonly used cliches to describe Bruce Lee, but look at the layout, it looks like he actually does believe it. No punctuation to suggest shock, awe or humour. But in saying that Fracy my friend, you may know our Edgarandrea better than I do and you may know that perhaps they don't believe it, who knows?
Amazing that after all these years, people are still having a laugh at Burt Ward's expense. Of course Bruce could demolish him. So what? He could demolish you and me, too. It all misses the point that, to children watching "Batman", Robin was a hero. Naturally the producers weren't going to show him being bruised and battered by Bruce. The "Mexican standoff", as the narrator calls it, was the only viable solution.
Amazing how Adam West was laughing when Van Williams was talking about Bruce Lee's abilities, as if it were a joke, as if Lee was 'insignificant'. Racist. West even had the arrogance to quip, "Faster than Robin?!?!"
Lee should have dropped West on camera when filming. Imagine the embarrassment if a 'superhero' got his ass kicked by someone so 'insignificant'.
Some people see racism where it doesn't exist. West was playing in character as Batman, and delivering his impromptu line in the same droll manner he delivered his lines on the show. It was played for laughs. It was not racism, for crying out loud.
West's laughter sounded mocking at the mention of "a Chinese (fighting) style called Gung-Fu" as if to say 'listen to the funny foreign name, how quaint'. It's a form of 'a judgment of someone by the color of their skin' as Martin Luther King would say.
OMG Robin was the worst sidekick ever. The only Robin that was cool was the one from Batman the Animated Series in the early 90s. Do they have DVD's of the Green Hornet? Or anything of the episodes? Or did it all die?
I farted and Robin fell over.....hahahahah

where you there? How do you know? You just assume...again, Burt Ward wrote in his book that their fight scene was nothing but a watered down, scaled down version of their many sparings.
3dartistguy 1 year ago
@3dartistguy Burt Ward held a brown belt in Karate? Well Damn, I forgot that having a Brown belt put anyone in the same league as Bruce Lee.
I've seen even Yellow Belts spar and dominate Brown Belts. Having a higher ranking belt reflects the techniques you apparently "know" it is not a reflection on your skill.

Bruce Lee could beat up both Batman and Robin
09tranm 2 years ago 35
But Kato is not Bruce Lee. If he were, he sure as heck wouldn't be working as a chauffeur.
Robin early in his career would be a match for Kato but you can't judge this fight from the 1960s version of the show, esp. since they were only TV actors.

its a tv show. In the cartoons robin might have won. But there was a character that even Batman couldnt handle. He lost and was losing the second i believe. Bronze Tiger.
So Kato might have had the edge after all.

If that's not saying something then what is?
terry222222 2 years ago
Lol, not sure how it can be foresight if you are referring to something which happened in the past and making judgements based upon knowledge of what already happened. That would be hindsight. Easy to sound like the prophet when you already know the answers. Also screaming at everyone who does not agree with you does little for your cause. I agree with you that Bruce Lee was not a better actor than Carradine, but you still dont know how it would have come out. Guess all you want.
RustyNinja 2 years ago
The problem here is very simple. There is no suspension on reality here. Bruce Lee was Kato and every knew it, and Burt Ward would be a smear. Robin and someone else being Kato might have saved the Green Hornet's show; OR just change the whole concept like in "Superman vs Ali". Bruce Lee was too big for TV.

peluchetaiwanes 2 years ago
It is amazing to me that American TV producers were not smart enough to give Bruce Lee his on TV show.
Can you imagine if they had given Bruce the lead role in the show "Kung Fu" instead of David Carradine??? They would have had a monster hit that would still be top-rated while playing in reruns today.
Slighting Bruce just because he was Asian has to be the single biggest bonehead decision ever made in the history of television.
Neil6000 2 years ago 12
KUNG FU WAS a big hit! David Carradine was a much better actor than Bruce Lee. If Bruce got the role as Caine, he wouldn't have been the superstar he ultimately became. So everything worked out, except for his untimely death, of course.
infinera06 2 years ago
Kung Fu wasn't a Hit, compare to Bruce's first movie "the big boss" it wipe kung fu out of this world. And your compare David Carradine to Bruce lee? You got to be joking right? Even in acting wise Bruce was better, why do you think to this day people still try to copy him so much compare to David Carradine?
The only thin Kung Fu did was prove to us how racist hollywood was.
ryn207 2 years ago 3
Firstly, RIP David Carradine. Secondly, Kung Fu was a highly rated TV show and was nominated for an Emmy for best show. David Carradine was also nominated for best actor that year. There is no comparison between Carradine and Bruce Lee. Carradine was a very good actor, not a fighter. Bruce was fighter, not a good actor. If you think Bruce Lee is a better actor, you are either biased or simply don't know what good acting is. People emulate Bruce Lee 's fighting antics, not his acting! Fool!
infinera06 2 years ago
PUHLEASE!!!
CINEMALEXZIKON 2 years ago 4
YOU...a film director?!!! LOL! Your naivete shows that you wish you are a legitimate director! Bruce Lee was a phenomenal fighter who just happened to be popular in the midst of a kung fu fad in the early 70's. Good actors don't necessarily equate to box office records. Carradine was nominated for numerous acting awards; Bruce Lee NONE! Bruce was a caricature. YOU simply don't know what good acting is! Quit exaggerating Bruce Lee's achievements! He did NOT change the film industry!
infinera06 2 years ago
If he didn't change the film industry, why, almost 40 years after his death, are people still imitating him, making moives of him, and debating him? Once Carradine bit the dust, oops! End of story. Get a clue. There are no David Carradine imitators, and no box office recrods being smashed by anyone named Carradine. Carradine's entire family MEMBERS were B grade actors period. You need a mental evaluation. BTW, how many films do you have in distribution? I have three, so try again jerk weed.
CINEMALEXZIKON 2 years ago
I think you are confusing ICONIC and REVOLUTIONARY. In my world, "changing the film industry forever" is something that applies only to the people who invented sound, color, and CGA. You're definition is simply not correct. It's like saying Buddy Holly changed the recording industry forever. Imagine B.L. never existed, the film industry would still be what it is. What he is is iconic, and legendary after his premature death. People imitate him because he is an icon. .MORE...
infinera06 2 years ago
People make movies of him mostly because of exploitation. I don't know how old you are, but I was around since the 50's, so I lived through the B.L. arrival and departure. He is bigger now than when he was alive. No one ever said he was a great actor, because he was not. Carradine was not an icon, hence...no imitators. What are the names of your films; I like to see them. BTW, I hope your film-making talent's better than your debating skill, which reeks of immaturity, irrelevance + ignorance.
infinera06 2 years ago
Although Kung Fu did take off, you are speculating on something that didnt have a chance to happen. You don't know if Kung Fu would have been better or worse with Bruce Lee in it or if he would not have become the superstar he became. I would argue more exposure would HAVE MEANT he probably would have been a bigger star. Bruce Lee would have capitalized on it. He was driven.. pure and simple.
RustyNinja 2 years ago
YOU may not know whether KUNG FU would have been better or worse with Bruce Lee as Caine. I DO!! It would have stunk! Further, TV actors don't become global superstars! And neither does over-exposure! In fact, his premature death was the main reason he's recognized as a legend today...aka James Dean. Otherwise, Bruce Lee, along with the kung fu fad of the early 70's would have simply faded into history as an era of poorly produced movies with bad acting. I still cringe when I watch Bruce "act."
infinera06 2 years ago
It still speculation. Hindsight is ALWAYS 20/20. While I agree that David Carradine was a better actor, I find it silly that you are able to say with absolute certainty about what might have been. Bruce's acting wasnt the greatest, but many people wanted to see him of his kung fu. Who is to say that his acting would not have become better. You are arguing from a very very one sided point of view. and proclaiming your view as the absolutely authority on the matter. It's really quite comical.
RustyNinja 2 years ago
It's not speculation. It's called foresight, which the producers of Kung Fu apparently had in employing Carradine for the role of Caine instead of BL. Kung Fu was a serious drama that was superbly scripted. The role required subtle acting and line delivery. BL simply was not right for that role. He was perfect for Kato (no real acting involved...very few lines). The role of Caine was in complete opposite of Kato. What's comical is that people here are so blinded through their idolatry of BL!
infinera06 2 years ago
The day they make David Carradine Biopics, and entire cultures adapt part of their popular culture because of his influence, then I'll listen to this idiocy. By the way smart guy, when interviewed back in 1975 regarding his role in Kung Fu, David Carradine himself said"I don't know any kung fu, I'm not a martial artist man, I am a dancer." yeah, some film icon. Dude was so high didn't even take acting or martial arts seriously, just out for the paycheck. Case closed.
CINEMALEXZIKON 2 years ago
Are you dense? I said Carradine was NOT an icon. And no one said Carradine was a fighter. Yet, he was convincing in his role as Caine because of his acting ability. As for YOU, Mr. Film Maker....beating off in front of the PC cam and uploading it to YouPorn does not qualify yourself to be a film maker and distributor! HAHHAHAHHAHHA

CaneFu 1 year ago
@Neil6000

Bruce certainly wasn't faster than a bullet.

3A7C 3 years ago 2
Some people see racism where it doesn't exist. West was playing in character as Batman, and delivering his impromptu line in the same droll manner he delivered his lines on the show. It was played for laughs. It was not racism, for crying out loud.
bus114 3 years ago
you must be white! Its always a white guy who could never see or understand white racism.
markframhein 3 years ago
West's laughter sounded mocking at the mention of "a Chinese (fighting) style called Gung-Fu" as if to say 'listen to the funny foreign name, how quaint'. It's a form of 'a judgment of someone by the color of their skin' as Martin Luther King would say.
