I don't get it. This HD 4875 has more memory than the gtx 295 and ddr5 memory (i dont get if thats better?), so should it not be better. I also don't get what overclocking and pixel shaders are. I like the gtx 295 but i think the HD 4875 looks better :)

Its not all about the display resolution. But also on the ammount of textures used in the game and especialy their quality.

Upcoming games for this winter will start to bottleneck on a 512MB card.

I have worked with textures myself that easily need 1GB of vRAM even at a pathetic 1280x1024 res.

And keep in mind, thanks to CUDA, your GPU (Nvidia) will be able to use their vRAM for your Windows and applications as well. So there more the better.

Only if you buy the 1GB version of the single 4870 and then of coruse overclock it to hell and back, which is something you cant do with the X2 cause the card is simply too hot.

The X2 is faster but I wouldnt relay on Crossfire or SLI.

Single GPUs are always more stable than multi GPU solutions.

And I also am not a big fan of ATI cause of their drivers and all. They have performed instable on my systems so far.

Though theres people who claim the opposite of that...

Wait till January, Nvidia has 2 new high end cards comming. One is a dual GPU based on the GTX 260 and one is a single GPU, basically a improved GTX 280, with a 55nm manufacturing process.

I have this card, and with the new 8.9 catalyst drivers in the overdrive it says that it's at 75º C, actually warms up the entire room as someone said, but at least you wont be cold in winter haha. It's not that noisy, when the comp starts it just "BRROOOM" to start the fan, but after it just changes the fan speed depending on heat, it's cheap compared to what nVidia offers, and Crossfire is compatible with every 3D app unlike SLI, wich is only compatible with app that's got SLI compatibility.

i have two of these cards and the only thing i dont like about it is the fact it warms up my room by 10 degrees from just 40 min of gaming.... after 3 hours it warms up the room by 15 degrees.... i normally close the door so... and this card underload can go up to 85-90 degrees

The vRAM is superior to the system RAM by all means. DDR3 RAM is not even as fast as GDDR3, and now GDDR5 is beyond that.

Trust me, some of the games that will come out this fall will benefit from more memory than 512mb and the ones in 2009 even more so.

The 4870s only have 512mb memory. this one has effectivly 1GB. 512mb is just not enough anymore for the latest games at the highest settings with a decent resolution and some AA.

Sorry for the late response. Didnt see your comment. Its hard to find a good board supporing Crossfire these days, after Nvidia dominated the past 2 years.

I recommend not to buy one at all at this point. Intel's new Nehalem CPUs are on their way, one is comming out this year. They will require a new CPU socket. So if you buy a Socket 775 board now. It will be useless as soon as Nehalem and its new sockets come out.

There will also be more Crossfire high end boards with Nehalem.

Yea its a monster. And keep in mind the drivers arent perfect yet and there will be over clocked versions and so on to make it dominate even more.

AMD did a good job, but this card ended up this good mostly cause of Nvidia.

So what I'm saying is, for 2008, its not THAT good of a card, its just that Nvidia's cards are THAT bad.

Regardless, its good to see AMD on top again, they deserve it!

1GB with GDDR3 will come later. But keep in mind, this X2 right here is a dual card, so it is 1GB effectivly.

Both cards have to load the same textures, therefor you do NOT benefit from the extra memory of the second card.

So this 2GB version performs like a 1GB single card would (memory wise).

If theres a 1GB dual card, (2x 512mb) it will perform like a 512mb card, because like I said, both cards need to load the same textures to render things correctly.

This kinda is a 2gig card. 1024mb per GPU. But performance wise, that doesnt equal 2GB cause both cards need to load the same textures.

I heard about another card with a true 2GB frame buffer.

I think that was for a 4850 or so, and it would use GDDR3.

2GB is complete over kill for now though and you wont take any advantage of that in any game till late 2009 or even later.

Well keep in mind the 4870x2 already is a dual GPU. So its 4 against 3. But I dont think it will matter at all. We all know how badly game engines are optimized for multi GPU solutions.

Nor can you compare the 4870x2 to the normal one. This one features 1024MB per GPU, therefor it will beat the GTX280 is high resolutions as well, which was about the only place the 280 was a little bit superior, cause it has twice as much memory.

Yes its 800 stream processors per GPU. Nvidia only has 240, but they're totaly different, you cant compare them. Thats actualy the reason why Nvidia was so much superior with the 8800GTX.
