Thermite is extremely dangerous because it is irreversible if lit. If thermite is lit, from what i know, it produces molten iron at temperatures around 4500°F. It would have melted through everything if it dripped down. It also produces uv rays so you would have to wear welders masks'...js

Should have moistened the pot first. Microwaves can't heat totally dry materials, but a wet pot could have gotten hot enough to set it off.

That reaction wasn't the Thermite going off, that was the microwaves reacting to the metal. It didn't heat up at all.

thermite is just iron oxide and aluminum powder mixed together. I forget the ratio. it's legal to own as without sulfur its actually not "explosive". However the aluminum takes a lot of heat to ignite so a magnesium fuse is best to use when igniting it. The arcs were from the fact that he is basically just microwaving metal shavings. Had the thermite actually ignited, it would've melted through the bottom of the microwave.A quick google search will explain how it works as well as mixing ratio.

hey Jorey, not to rain on your parade or anything, but that wasn't real thermite. To create true(or in this case, working) thermite, you need Fe2O3 and Al, both ground to an immensely fine powder. We took aluminum, iron (II) oxide, and also some potassium permanganate. Then we put a ribbon of Magnesium in it and lit it up :DD lol So easy. We also placed a mound of sand beneath it, so it would hopefully create enough heat and pressure on the sand to create glass.

Several reasons it may not have ignited: 1. the thermite (part aluminum, part iron oxide) did not get hot enough before it killed the microwave

2. The thermite wasn't mixed well enough

3. the shavings were very large, they should be powder-like for the reaction to carry on well.
