if it was supercharger the tone and pitch would be exactly the same in each gear mr pod08 and not get higher as the speed on the gearbox internals increases.

When sumbody says straight cut gears, think of a gear and the teeth on it are straight lines on the width. They provide a much better acceleration due to their not being much friction between the gears however as u can tell they r noisy as hell. Helical gears are more like diagonal lines on the width and the edges are chamfered to allow them to mesh together smoothly and with very little noise. Trade-off being much more friction and less acceleration

@xmeph its not the revving thats making the whining its the straight cut gears (dog box) but most road cars don't have straight cut gears but if u notice if u reverse ur car it makes a slight whine thats is because ur reverse gear is straight cut...but still revvs pretty high

yes its the same with reverse gear in most road cars having straight cut gears. Thats why cars whine when reversing. I guess its done to save money on road cars as I think they are cheaper to make and reverse is not used that much anyway. Mesh gears help lubrication.

Ok, let me clarify. The gears are straight no syncros to help the gears engage/disengage. The syncros allow less direct contact of the gears and are made less durable.

it has a clutch but u only use it when moving off, or to get in reverse. or if the gear box is malfunctioning. Otherwise you just shift, fast and precise. The dog box is designed to take the repeated abuse. A regular tranny u cant do this to, or u shouldnt ;)

the noise is from the straight cut gears. much stronger in design than conventional helical cut gears. helical gears are used in road cars because they make little noise, and are cheap to manufacturer.

its obviosuly a mixed class racing event of some sort... this guy is obviously in one of the top class cars but for some reason started right at the back... good to watch him making his way through the field though.

Cracking Vid , always loved the sound these types of Racing Beemers made. Remember the AM Schnitzer 318i's that raced in the BTCC in the early to mid 90s ? they sounded just like this. As for the guys competition in this race i dnt think its evenly matched ! all sorts of different classes of racer lol
