Ya, Pf-9 with metal release is 100% reliable. I haven't shot 10,000 rounds but Ive put 200 through mine and not one problem with cheap walmart rounds.
I had one of there gun limb in the trigger, would advance the next round, slide wouldn't work either. That was after 45 find went through it. That was last year. Their customer service was great and they took good care of me. A great company. I have a P 11 no problems.
I saw a used PF-9 at Cabela's for $189 yesterday. It looked like new to me. I told the clerk that I'd be back for it when I finished my shopping. Of course it was gone when I got back. >:(
I watched your sheep dog vid a couple of weeks ago and it really inspired me to be not just a responsible gun owner but a responsible gun owner who carrys consistantly. I went to a gun show and picked up a new pf-9 for $239.99. Thanks for what you do and keep up the good work.
This video was done in 2009 and was a good review but by now in 2011 if you google this gun you find too many bad reviews .1-your hand easily hits mag release causing it to push the mag out and cause a malfunction 2-double feed very common on this gun just do a google research on pf9 and you see a tons of problems with this gun .
Great video review of the KT-PF9. I recently purchased one, black on black, for $330 for off duty carry. This gun is a little mule; KICK! with standard pressure rounds. It jammed -- fail to feed -- very often during the first 75 rnds. I firmed up my grip which helped alot. Your review was spot-on . Thamk you for another great review. I carry FMJ -- Dept has very specific rules -- off duty and Critical defense at home. Thank you and Semper Fi.
I had initially decided on the Glock 26 for CC, but this review has changed my mind, and saved me a considerable amout of money. Thanks Nutn for the awesome work you do!
@nutnfancy Just wanted to say I that your review is very good. I must agree that it is a excellent ccw. Mine is one of the newest ones out in the new Coyote tan color. I also have had two jams one attributed to limp wristing the gun the other was dirt I had ran 150 rounds without cleaning. I do find the recoil to be very snappy, mostly cured by a houge Handall JR slip on grip. There is also a 8 round clip or a kit to make a 7 round a 8 round available now.
A gun with a trigger that needs to be staged that much, coupled with harsh recoil, makes for a very, very poor carry weapon - in my opinion. In the even that you'd ever need to use it in a life threatening situation, you aren't going to be staging the trigger, and that recoil + nerves is going to make accurate shooting very tough.
You say the Kel-tec PF-9 is just as accurate a the Kahr CM9 but is it as accurate as the Kahr PM-9.Does the polygonal barrel of the Kahr make it more accurate and the bullet fly faster. Finally can the PF-9 handle +P ammo?
What 9mm ammo do you carry? And why? Thanks! I've been watching your videos for years and I know that everything that I've purchased, that you have highly suggested, I have enjoyed. Thanks again.
Me again Nutn, My friend got 7 of the Db9's last week and sold 5 of the 7 pistols in a day. One of them had a pink frame and a black slide. I'd like to see how the Db9 stacks up against the PF9. Do you think you will doing a review on the Diamondback pistols in the near future?? They look like a Glock but will they perform like a Glock? Will Kel Tec kick their butts???
Nutnfancy I'm taking a serious look at the PF9. A friend of mine recently got one and I'm going to try it out to see if it will work for me. Also have you seen the Diamondback Db9? I think it is the smallest 9mm made now. The cool thing is the Db9 and it's .380 sister are very small pistols and look like baby Glocks been super shrunk! Being a Glock fan I got very excited when I saw these pistols. However I like the way the PF9 fits my hand. The Db9 has a higher price point.
Great reviews! What carry ammo do you use in your KelTec PF9?
I just purchased a PF9 based on your review. Paid $260.00. Haven't picked it up yet. I previously did not consider the KelTec PF9 because it was so inexpensive. But have a lot of respect for your reviews and the fact that you carry the gun means a lot.
because of this review, im getting the PF9. the lc9 which i consider is awful. for couple basic reasons, you cant field strip w/o a pin, if your lefty like me there is no double sided safety.
also (but not important) i cant stand out ruger is pandering to the people of California, to their gun laws. example, safety, and the cosmetics that says "up when loaded". if you don't know your gun is loaded, maybe you shouldn't own one.
I like their designs, Kel-Tek is a pioneer in the field of gun making. I'll probably never own one, but I'm sure Ruger is going to copy them sooner or later.
Please do a video comparing pf9 and lc9. Another great discussion is if I have lcp do I need lc9. Get rid of lcp for lc9. Hmmmm.... Thx for all your great work!
Brother just got a PF-9 for my mom and I tell you I aint never felt better better getting a gun for her. Love everything you do god bless you and your family
@crystalino2003 mine does it as well. It doesnt thwart accuracy. Ive put over 2000 rounds through mine without a single malfunction. It also shoots very accurate despite the wiggle. Ive called kel-tec on the issue because i too was worried. Their tecs said it was because the pistol is so small that it kicks more and needs more room between metal to keep its accuracy than bigger pistols of the type.
Would you recommend this for a young lady for EDC? I'm looking at either a p3-at/LCP or pf9 for my first carry gun and to eventually give to my girlfriend after she puts in a little more trigger time. I know she'd carry the P3-AT/LCP every day, but I'd prefer to know she's packing a 9mm Luger vs. a .380 ACP if this would be small enough for her to carry comfortably every day. She's about 5' 3" and 120 lbs. How's this compare in size with a P3-AT? Great vids man!
Looking for a new 9mm carry pistol. I've heard good and bad about the pf9 as well as the new LC9. For the extra $100 is the LC9 worth it? Also i havent seen you do any reviews on the cw series, they any good? I live in Ogden and Impact unfortunately doesnt ever have a pf9 to shoot so im hesitant to to ever buy a gun without firing it first. I'd like to see a review of the LC9 when you get a chance. love your stuff! keep it up
I bought my pf9 two weeks ago and shot it last sunday. Shot around 20 rounds and it jam on me. i boke it down and put some gun oil on it and didn't have a problem there after. Shot 100rounds with a total of 3 jams to be precise. It does have a kick to it but manageable. its a real light gun and i think i made a good choice for a ccw. I DONT RECOMMEND IT FOR A lady that hasn't shot a gun in her live. My wife didn't like it. I LOVE IT. THANKS TO NUTNFANCY I MADE A GOOD CHOICE.
Anyone know how to make the slide release a little easier to operate? Mine is a little stiff, damn accurate and only on 100 rds through it. Thanks in advance.
@allendmaxey Kel-Tec says it's a slide catch not a slide release, which means it isn't meant to be used that way. However, I'm sure you can find an after-market slide release like those made for Glocks.
Returning the PF-9 for multiple failures to feed, failures to eject, stove piping, and misfires. Approx 100 rds through gun. These issues occur @ approx 50% failure rate. Cleaning and a variety of ammo types do not resolve the malfunctions. Perhaps the different size dots on the rear sights were a forewarning of the poor quality parts and craftsmanship that went into the manufacture of this item. Not a fan its a liability to Kel-Tec in its present configuration.
so i found that if i use my kel tec with a non slip inside the pocket holster, i'll carry it 99% of the time. But the problem i am running into is that the no slip holster is rather rough on the inside of my pocket and makes a lot of lint, which finds its way into my gun. So if i haven't just cleaned it i don't trust it at all. any idea how to avoid this anybody?
Is the pf9 second strike capable? My p11 has never failed in 450 rounds. Light reloads, hollow points, nato rounds. Thanks in advance and keep up the good work.
I've found Kel-Tec's to be the absolute most unreliable firearm brand in the U.S. Go look at the forums and you'll see a plethora of fixes and problems with these guns. If you don't have the money, I understand, but if you do AND your life is important to you then please spend the extra money and get yourself a sub-compact in a Sig or a Glock or CZ where the percentage of malfunctions are SIGNIFICANTLY lower...
@toutatis12 don't take my advice...just go to the Kel-Tec forums and see all the little problems and fixes that people have to talk about and implement in order for the gun to fire consistintly. If your idea of a great weapon is buying it and then working out all the bugs, then maybe Kel-Tec would be a good brand for you.
@cobyson100 The forums are old, they have reworked the entire PF9 at the manufacturer level. The "fixes" pages at the forums is discussing the path that fixes have taken over the last few years.
Third time watching this and I fall in love with my PF-9 all over again. I carry a PF-9 or a Glock 23 and I seem to be carrying my PF-9 more and more. Just such a light gun with the power of 9mm.
First I appreciate your views, the first two thirds of the trigger then finishing was a big help to my shooting. As for my pf9, new out of the box I had many problems. After 500 plus rounds I am still having FTF and FTE. Not just a little either. Somewhere around 10%. Very unacceptable.
i have 2 keltecs p3at and pf9 i love them both and every day i have at least 1 on my person never had a jam i trust these guns with my life great reveiw nutn.
So, how about a comparison keltec pf9 vs. Taurus 709b, was really looking hard at, and planned to pick up the taurus tuesday... then saw this... everything but the trigger sells me on the pf9, so now I'm not sure. My primary is a sig226 elite with the short reset trigger, the taurus seems more similar in that regard.... huge fan of yours, and would love the input.
Kel tec introduces affordable competition to guns that would be unaffordable to alot of guys. The ar15, FN2000 bullpup, the ar .223 pistol, The FN 5.7 pistol, all have cheaper kel tec alternatives. KT also set trends. The p3at set off the modern .380 craze. Kel tec introduced the sub2000 before beretta's px4, and they 1-upped hi-point by creating a folder and glock mag setup. Cant wait to see KT in 2011. I think a reliable KT version of the tec-9 and FN ps90 would be popular.
Great review! Thanks again nutn. This would be a great summer carry gun. Easy to conceal under just a t-shirt. Personally, in cooler months I can get away with something a little larger that provides a bit more firepower.
You've got some of the best reviews on the web. I appreciate the time and effort you put into these. I've watched many of your reviews on guns, knives, pack gear etc. Enjoyed them all. I have a question too..
I'm getting my CCW and looking for a good carry gun and I'm stuck. I'm left handed so that's a factor along with price and size. I'd to stick with 9mm. The Kel-Tec PF9 looks good but its not ambidextrous. High stress sit might be a prob. What would you recommend ?
I like this gun but had some miss fire issues. Firing pining isn't hitting dead center all the time. This happened with 3 different kinds of ammo. Anyone else have this problem? I think I'm going to send back to Kel-Tec.
@woodlandcammo27 Both crimson trace & laserlyte make lasers for it. CTC has one on the trigger guard. The Laserlyte can replace the rear sight. They have a small rail model as well.
Thank you for your very thorough reviews. I have purchased 3 handguns based on them (SP101, LCP and today, the PF9). I shot it today at the range but had a lot of problems with inadvertent actuation of the mag release. I had two instructors try it and they both had the same issue. It's a real problem for me and I can't carry this gun with confidence. I changed my grip but my accuracy suffers. Any recommendations to fix this issue? Should I send it back to Keltec? Thank you.
FYI - I called Kel-Tec and there is a fix for this mag release issue. Even if you have the metal mag catch, there was another one issued after that one to fix this mag drop problem. They are shipping the parts to me. I already took the old mag release off and the spring. I will update again after I shoot it with the new parts.
UPDATE: I received the new mag catch and mag catch spring. It was a little difficult to install with the frame, so I took the frame off and then it was easy. Problem solved. I had no mag drops. I shot 200 rounds without a single jam, FTF or any other problem. Shot some tight groups and am very happy with this purchase. Thanks again, Nutnfancy, for a great review. I will now carry this in my belly band, very comfortable little companion.
I bought a PF9 when it was first introduced and mine had several of the problems you mentioned in the video. Kel-Tec was great about taking care of these issues for me. I sent it back to the factory twice and they made the upgrades free of charge with really fast turn-around. I ended up selling the gun but have since shot a couple of the newest versions at the range and all of the glitches have indeed been fixed. It is now an excellent, reliable carry weapon. Great review!
The PF9 also comes in Brown. I'll do a video soon reviewing my experiences with it. I wish you would've taken time to do the take down / assembly. Not a fan of putting this guy back together yet..
When I want info, I come to your vid's. Consequently, I have recently purchase the PF-9, to carry the lightest, bigest boom for the buck! Thanks for your input!
I saw that you dry fired the PF9. I heard that it is not good for the PF9 to be dry fired because the firingpin/hammer hits the extractor screw...Any truth to it?
@asnmonkey6969 The gun had a snap cap in it. It's a dummy round with a firing pin that is mounted on a spring. Basically you can dry fire all day long with snap caps with no adverse affects. Kel-tec does not recommend dry firing without snap caps.
I might have missed this, but, did you mention the distance you must release off the PF-9 trigger for it to reset between rounds? Some guns require full release to reset, others only require 1/4 to 1/2 release to reset the trigger and allow you to fire again (as you see in the Glocks for instance). I appreciate and admire your work on this "TNP" thing, please keep the awesomeness coming!
Ntnfancy, I like this one. Objective presntation, I had time today to look at one I plan to purchase. Thanks for the info concerning the magazine release.
After a lot of shopping, I purchased the Kel Tec PF9 and have not looked back. For it's intended use, very good tool. Great value, I believe. The safety is the long takeup on the trigger and it took a bit for me to get used to it.
Nutnfancy the rough edges I found were on the back of the grip with out a pacmyer or such cover or gloves the vertical ridges would cut into your hand and just so you know I work with my hands so they aren't soft office hands LOL Thanx Mark

I saw your review of the Kel-Tec PF-9 is that an accessory rail under the barrel? You say you can not feed it a steady diet of plus P ammo but will I get a stoppage or misfire if I use +p+ ammo for the first shot? Finally will you ever do a reviews of the S&W .380 and the Kahr .P380 and the Beretta PF4 Storm sub compact and Seecamp .380 all guns I'm considering for EDC?
Great Job! I find my pf9 dosn't like fmj ammo. I ran remmington and winchester and a couple of dozen rounds of federal and had way too many missfires.Feed it hollowpoints and it will fire all day.Any suggestions? Thanks C.
I've heard a lot of people say that the M16/AR-15 is the most popular gun in America. What evidence is there for this? I figured that the Remington 870 or the 1911 would be the most popular guns in America.
Oh yeah the trigger is deffinetly workable but takes some practice. My bro and i got to the point of 1 inch groups at 7 and 15 yards with it after about a box of ammo split between us at the range, after that, the last 2 boxes we really had it down pat, i was at the point where u can quickly pull it to the point of pressure, and then hold on target at hair trigger level of pull left, im talking quick too, like less than a quarter second to do that, just becomes muscle memory.
Did Kel Tec pay you for this review? I have watched yur vids for over 1.5 yrs, but since you mentioned "they wanted me to tell you this..." I hope this is a true from the heart review because I have found it for $260 and am going to buy it in part because of your reviews.
Thank you for your very thorough reviews. I have purchased 3 handguns based on them (SP101, LCP and today, the PF9). even if he was paid who cares(i believe he should be); nutn has proven to be plenty honest in his reviews. the part where he ref'd "keltec" simply shows he does his research and probably called keltec, let them know he was going to review the gun so they better come clean...so to speak. kudos to nutn again!

Thanks for the information. I was trying to decide between the Walther PPS in .40 or the Millenium Pro in .45 caliber. The PF-9 may be a viable smaller option for summer carry.
Bought one of these for my wife to conceal carry. I was impressed enough to buy one for myself and after carrying a short gripped (to accept 15rnd mags) glock 17 for almost 2 years i dont even feel it. I also ground down the mag release on both PF9s as i would rather have to take more time to reload than drop a mag unintentionally. I also recommend the extended floor plate. Overall a great little gun.
first video i have seen of yours nutnfancy, and i have to say you sold me! both on your videos an the kel-tec pf-9...i have been searching around for my first concealed carry, and im going to go ahead and go with this one...great videos, both the shooting review and the table top...keep up the good work
I've owned a PF-9 for a couple of years now, and it's my main carry (concealed carry). Love it, for all the reasons that "Nutnfancy" tells us! I use it with a concealment t-shirt and often forget I have it and 4 mags on me....that's how comfortable it is!
As of 4/2010, PF-9 new grip with internal parts is only $34.00 on their website. So if you want to change the color to green, black, or grey its only $34.00. Kinda cool.
@dncmachine463, if you watch the video and listen he says, Most users will never put more then 500 rounds through this gun. Meaning its not a range gun its a self defense gun. With its short barrel length/sight radius makes the firearm not as delightful to shoot as some other offerings.
nutnfancy said that you can't shoot more than 500 rounds through this gun? I will like to take the gun out and practice with it and shoot it for fun, is this gun going to malfunction after the 500 round limit?
This goes for ALL Kel tec guns. As cool as their guns are and as much as I would like to own4 or 5 right now cash in hand if they don't do something about production soon, people will get sick of waiting and go buy something else. For almost a year I have not been able to find one Kel Tec. That is pitiful. I have been checking internet daily and have 4 gun shops looking.
@TJ347 Gun broker has the older p-11's not pf-9. I have been watching Gallery of guns every day for over 6 months, not just for that but a sub 2000 and a su16. Also every gun shop I have been to says they can't get them.
So this is a bit bulkier in comparison to a p11, right? I've held the p11 and not a big fan with my pinkie hanging off the edge of the grip. Do any owners know if their pinkie hangs off or not with a standard magazine? Or do you need an extended one to get that full grip of it?
@Shadownick935 lot slimmer then a p-11 and yes pinky hands off. but hnoesly broke mine in last week 250 rounds and had no problem with the pinky issue you really get used to it. granted i prefer my sig 239 with hogue grips. but for conceal carry and likly hood of having to use it not getting a full grip is not going to be a problem. at least not for me.
I have been told by most of the dealers I have been too that if they can get one it wont be in the store longer then 2 days. Finally found a PF9 at a gun show yesterday. Close to 200 dealers at the show and only one PF9. Anyway took it our today and ran 100 rounds through it. Not one problem. Just like you said 7 Yd groups very tight. 15 yd groups almost as good. I did have to drift the sight to the right. (Right handed and right eyed) Dead on a dime at 7 yds. Thanks for the help with this one
I just went to the Dulles Expo center's gunshow and did a quick scan of the tables to find a PF 9. Found one on display and he only had one other behind the desk. He started with 4 and the show only opened 30 minutes prior.
I love mine! Ran another 50 yesterday just fine and it was WIn wight box. I have herd thats the most problematic. My son shot it and fell in love with it. I guess I am going to have to find another. He should graduate the police acc in May it that would make a great grad pres.
Ya, Pf-9 with metal release is 100% reliable. I haven't shot 10,000 rounds but Ive put 200 through mine and not one problem with cheap walmart rounds.

also (but not important) i cant stand out ruger is pandering to the people of California, to their gun laws. example, safety, and the cosmetics that says "up when loaded". if you don't know your gun is loaded, maybe you shouldn't own one.

Hey Nutn... any thoughts on the .22 coversion(twisted industries) for training with this weapon?
waste of money, or nice addition?
I carry the PF9 in part bc of your review, thx.

I like their designs, Kel-Tek is a pioneer in the field of gun making. I'll probably never own one, but I'm sure Ruger is going to copy them sooner or later.

I just got a pf-9... Love this gun, what holster set up do you carry for your EDC?
RWW1980 11 months ago

Thanks in advance.
allendmaxey 1 year ago
@allendmaxey Kel-Tec says it's a slide catch not a slide release, which means it isn't meant to be used that way. However, I'm sure you can find an after-market slide release like those made for Glocks.

Worst purchase ever

I've found Kel-Tec's to be the absolute most unreliable firearm brand in the U.S. Go look at the forums and you'll see a plethora of fixes and problems with these guns. If you don't have the money, I understand, but if you do AND your life is important to you then please spend the extra money and get yourself a sub-compact in a Sig or a Glock or CZ where the percentage of malfunctions are SIGNIFICANTLY lower...
cobyson100 1 year ago
@cobyson100 How old is the info you are looking at? 2009?
toutatis12 1 year ago
@toutatis12 don't take my advice...just go to the Kel-Tec forums and see all the little problems and fixes that people have to talk about and implement in order for the gun to fire consistintly. If your idea of a great weapon is buying it and then working out all the bugs, then maybe Kel-Tec would be a good brand for you.
cobyson100 1 year ago
@cobyson100 The forums are old, they have reworked the entire PF9 at the manufacturer level. The "fixes" pages at the forums is discussing the path that fixes have taken over the last few years.

First I appreciate your views, the first two thirds of the trigger then finishing was a big help to my shooting. As for my pf9, new out of the box I had many problems. After 500 plus rounds I am still having FTF and FTE. Not just a little either. Somewhere around 10%. Very unacceptable.

What would you recommend ?
dbrady913 1 year ago
I like this gun but had some miss fire issues. Firing pining isn't hitting dead center all the time. This happened with 3 different kinds of ammo. Anyone else have this problem? I think I'm going to send back to Kel-Tec.

Thank you.
TheGunshineState1 1 year ago
@TheGunshineState1
TheGunshineState1 1 year ago
@TheGunshineState1
TheGunshineState1 1 year ago
I bought a PF9 when it was first introduced and mine had several of the problems you mentioned in the video. Kel-Tec was great about taking care of these issues for me. I sent it back to the factory twice and they made the upgrades free of charge with really fast turn-around. I ended up selling the gun but have since shot a couple of the newest versions at the range and all of the glitches have indeed been fixed. It is now an excellent, reliable carry weapon. Great review!

I saw that you dry fired the PF9. I heard that it is not good for the PF9 to be dry fired because the firingpin/hammer hits the extractor screw...Any truth to it?
asnmonkey6969 1 year ago
@asnmonkey6969 Nevermind, I see you had a snapcap in the chamber towards the end.
asnmonkey6969 1 year ago
@asnmonkey6969 The gun had a snap cap in it. It's a dummy round with a firing pin that is mounted on a spring. Basically you can dry fire all day long with snap caps with no adverse affects. Kel-tec does not recommend dry firing without snap caps.

Thanks nutnfancy, great review!

I saw your review of the Kel-Tec PF-9 is that an accessory rail under the barrel? You say you can not feed it a steady diet of plus P ammo but will I get a stoppage or misfire if I use +p+ ammo for the first shot? Oh yeah the trigger is deffinetly workable but takes some practice. My bro and i got to the point of 1 inch groups at 7 and 15 yards with it after about a box of ammo split between us at the range, after that, the last 2 boxes we really had it down pat, i was at the point where u can quickly pull it to the point of pressure, and then hold on target at hair trigger level of pull left, im talking quick too, like less than a quarter second to do that, just becomes muscle memory.

@dncmachine463, if you watch the video and listen he says, Most users will never put more then 500 rounds through this gun. Meaning its not a range gun its a self defense gun. With its short barrel length/sight radius makes the firearm not as delightful to shoot as some other offerings.

So this is a bit bulkier in comparison to a p11, right? I've held the p11 and not a big fan with my pinkie hanging off the edge of the grip. Do any owners know if their pinkie hangs off or not with a standard magazine? Or do you need an extended one to get that full grip of it?
Shadownick935 2 years ago
No, it is slimmer than a P-11. As for the size of the grip in length. I don't really know, but I think it's the same.
iwwqytv 2 years ago
@Shadownick935 lot slimmer then a p-11 and yes pinky hands off. but hnoesly broke mine in last week 250 rounds and had no problem with the pinky issue you really get used to it. granted i prefer my sig 239 with hogue grips. but for conceal carry and likly hood of having to use it not getting a full grip is not going to be a problem. at least not for me.

Close to 200 dealers at the show and only one PF9. Anyway took it our today and ran 100 rounds through it. Not one problem. Just like you said 7 Yd groups very tight. 15 yd groups almost as good.
