As adults we don't learn so efficiently because we don't use the correct method. Learning by grammar, tests, list of words, etc. it's not a good method. We shold to the same that kids: Listen almost two years to getting accostumed to the language.
My 2 years son is a language genious too, acquiring Polish, German and English at the same time, and it's amazing how easily he acquires these three lgs! this is the difference between lg acquisition and lg learning, being after 6 years old you do not acquire any more but learn and learing is not so easy then... deswegen.. ich empfehle : let the children acquire more lg!!!!!
I suppose that learning sight words, as you suggest, would be beneficial and a great start to actual reading.
And it is amazing the way babies pick up multiple languages with such ease! All that is needed is simple exposure, preferrably to a native speaker.
My children (20 mos & 7 mos) are learning 4 languages (English, German, Spanish, and American Sign Language). We plan on introducing Mandarin, as a 5th language, soon.
