I think all Duran albums had their better points, but I think what Ronson was trying to caputure was that Disco/New Wave/New Romantic blend that was uniquely Duran Duran and that launched their career and that is best caputured on Duran Duran 1 and Rio. There was a real edgy sound to the band on those two alubms, especially with Nicks' highly flanged keys and old school sequencing. They also sang more about sex. Interesting album..like someone crossed Duran 1 with Medazzaland.
I was just thinking about the 'composition' of the music Duran Duran does - after the delight of seeing a playful spaceship in the video / Nick Rhodes / I thought - this Guy is really really neat - and I started thinking that I never really paid attn. to the composition element when I was younger - now at 48 , I can tether those thoughts and try to appreciate learning the angle of Nicks' Art .. cool stuff // stuph lol
Alluding to the 'Dream' "a walk through the desert" has me feeling at 48 , I have come across an oddly placed orchid in the sand - that feeling of renewal comes naturally after 15 or so years from the generation layer .. Although I dont know what happens in the personal aspirations of the Band - I think its' truely a gem of Duran Duran to recognize and respect the affective opinion of a younger generation - they always seem to embrace renewal though - they keep their 'Beauty .. in a Beastlyway!
I barely notice his input anyway, someone "composes" durans music ? I find the band unimportant in the musical scheme of things, while mighty bands like The Smiths emerged the twee ,highly commercial simple ditties of duran appealed to many teenage girls. They are motivated, i believe by two things, money and their never decreasing ego. He can stuff his "millions",integrity is all. Is Rhodes becoming Quinton Crisp ? he seems to be morphing in to him !
@permaveg Except for the fact that he's not gay and not full of outrageous soundbites. Think what you will, but I doubt the guys give a toss about people who think they're just out for money.
@LittleEmoDancer I wasn't suggesting he is gay i just thought he looked like Crisp. Duran are just lightweights and musical history will mark them as just that, i dont think they have influenced any band of importance around today unlike Nirvana or the Smiths for example.
Although Ronson has done a great job of creating a 'nostalgic' throwback sound, Seven was a great album, it TOTALLY had a direction and I think the title track 'All you need is now' could have been something off Seven.
@permaveg yes I know but I still think he's above average, he has managed to blend in the synths while not overwhelming the other musicians as he is the prime song writer and force behind Duran. I find his style of composing and playing in a pop world iconic, he maybe cold and snobbish but he can be because he knows what he's doing, unlike us who sit here typing away while he makes millions. I'm still sticking with my story - he is the coolest.
I dig the new album, but it doesn't hold me like Rio and (especially) Seven. My complaint is definitely low key though because I am just glad they are still creating music and touring after all these years. As a guitarist I do miss Andy...*sigh*. I know...its over/move on.
I disagree with Mark Ronson. It sucks to see Simon Le Bon agreeing with him on it. I think Seven And The Ragged Tiger was an AMAZING album. A great follow-up to Rio. But that's just me though.
@MrNostalgiaX Yeah I agree Seven was amazing..and I didnt consider that "getting off track" at all (the Sing Blue Silver tour would never have been the same without it!!) BUT....I do appreciate Mark Ronson turning them back to their original energy and sound. I saw another interview on youtube and Ronson was a big Duran fan from the 80s so that is how he approached the new sound concept for this album.
@MrNostalgiaX Yeah, it's got some of my all-time favorite DD songs on there... New Moon, I Take the Dice, Crime and Passion, and possibly my ALL-TIME favorite DD song, Shadows on Your Side. It's a damn good album. And I'm saying that as someone who doesn't unconditionally love everything that DD has done.

My goodness does Nick look great. Even after years of seeing him wearing heavy make up he looks just fine without it.

Simmo, Halloween's over. You can take off the George Michael ca. 1985 make-up.
