Excuse me, but IBM don't exactly have the best record of predicting the future. There was an IBM CEO in the 1950s, I forget the guy's name but he said something along the lines of "I can see there being a world market for maybe five computers." Well, a little TOO conservative there. Mind you, he wasn't alone. We ARE living in the future - the average computer nowadays has more processing power than the best superpower that was around even 20 years ago!

People die from technology, such as cars, but the net effect is that society is much more stable, affluent, and comfortable. Imagine living in dank hut in the dark ages, living a sickly life probably for only 40 years, staying within 50 miles of your home, no showers or baths, your whole life with no technology except the plow and sword. Likewise, in the future today's conditions will be considered very pitiful, mundane, and unenjoyable in relation.

And lets say we do happend to find and impliment something that is a renewable resource alternative to fossil fuel. What about the amount of empty space on earth that can support a civilization. Population is rising, not declining. Rough times are ahead, thats for sure. Its possible that our resources will run out before 2050.

Why are we worried about what technologies there will be in the future? What about PEOPLE? The earth is becoming increasingly overpopulated, non regenerating resources are plummiting (such as oil, coal). I don't think we need MORE stuff to destroy the earth, all this new stuff will most definitely just use MORE resources! There is no escaping, even if we find alternate fuel... how much of IT will there be? Can we possibly indrustialize it throughout the nation efficiently? Think about this.

Good comment. there is evidence that the poles were located in different places on the globe at different times. It has also been suggested that there is geological evidence that the magnetic poles direction (180 degree) has shifted in the past. But no one knows for sure what will happen if they do shift again.
