Every time I listen to She Chameleon, I realize this is one of the most beautiful songs from Marillion. I like the atmosphere that Fish carries around him.
I first heard this Album in 1984 within the confines of a Drumkit filled bedroom belonging to a guy from Fareham, his name was Rupert and he had a signed copy of the Gatefold Album Cover, Aaah the memories.
I remember buying the album 10 years ago being like 12 years old and sitting in my living room couch listening to all of it.........hearing this song really blew me away, it became an instant favorite and with a cover like that I was wordless
"A great artist... must be shaken by the naked truths that will not be comforted. This divine discontent, this disequilibrium, this state of inner tension is the source of artistic energy." - Goethe
In comparison & by the rather demure nature of his contributions I would say that H. had a rather sheltered background ;-)
The answer is, if you want to, yes, he's talking of a slut. However you can interpret it differently, as a relationship that has become only physical, as "the love-light" faded. And the lyrics is talking of all the we-chameleons, "oui"? (that's out it ends, and it's French for "yes").
Credit to H, it takes a brave man to try and step into those mighty shoes and he's certainly made a valiant attempt. However the best day that our band has had in the past 20 years has to have been at Aylesbury Market on the 26th of August 2007 ;)
@papitata: Yeah, AFAIK Fish was the primary lyricist for the band. Whether or not any other members occasionally contributed a word or a phrase here or there, I don't know. If they did, it was presumably minimal and I've never heard or read any info from the band that would indicate that happened. His literary skill blows me away -- I just got tired of the negativity (particularly on this album).
@Zontar82 no matter whether negative lyrics, were used in the making of misplaced childhood or not, it is still a phenominal album and is still well loved by the fans that gave them their place in music history
@beamerman1964 yeh agreed with that.the fact that i said "depressing" doesn't mean its bad :) ilove for what it is,but you have to listen with a particular "mood" beforehand,while later albums are a little more light on feelings.its a great album nonetheless don't misunderstand me

all Fish-Marillion is great, despite that Seasons end is also almost as good, with a better vocalist. Annie Haslam is a Lorien elf. Tears!!

Hogarth doesn't even come close!

@Blyskawica1:
You're right, H doesn't come close -- but not in the way you're thinking.
Steve H doesn't come close to Fish's dark,
cynical and harsh relationship lyrics. Fish was
was a bitter guy during this time and, kinda like Roger Waters,
he used his lyrics to lash out at those he
didn't like (particularly women). Personally, I much prefer Steve's
more positive, uplifting lyrics to Fish's
wordy vitriol. The latter was depressing and
got old after awhile IMHO.

@Blyskawica1
Well, obviously you're entitled to your opinion.
As you might expect, I strongly disagree with your comment about the best day that they've had in the past 20 years.
With H they've moved light years beyond
the limited lyrical scope provided by Fish.
He was obviously a gifted writer, but how many songs do we need about drinking, life on the road, and bitterness towards women?
It got old.
I'm curious: Which Marillion albums
have you heard in their entirety over the
last 20 years?
Ken5244 1 year ago
You've a good point there, Ken5244. But are you sure that Fish wrote all the lyrics? (Sorry, too lazy here now to search for their vinyl records..)
