The word was actually really funky, ive not seen anything as out there as the word since. Remember this was very early 90's when it aired. In fact it was the Word that gave Nirvana their first TV break. I remember watching this performace and being totally blown away, was a Nirvana fan ever since :-) Yeah ppl on the show could behave stupidly but it was an 'anything goes' attitude to the show.

The Word was watched and participated in almost exclusively by drunk Brits on Friday nights (most of those coming home from the pub would watch it simply because nothing else was on - only 4 TV channels at the time). It developed a bit of a cult following, and people would attend it as an ironical evening out, tending to dance & behave in a stupid way simply because they weren't taking the whole thing seriously at all.
