Well, score another hit against "intelligent design"; now we can create life ourselves. Who knows where we can go from here? What diseases may become a thing of the past? What birth defects may we be able to correct in the womb? What new sources of abundant clean energy might we create? And none of it requiring a god. That might actually be the best part; letting go of this fictional character and learning to embrace wondrous new sources of knowledge that can benefit all of us.
@ClamCrunchy Ya that was a badass as it gets. We all know what the true enemy of civilization is. If it where up to all these religious people we would still be burning people alive at the stake for being witches.

@winterstellar Some studies show scientists are more likely to be atheists than the average bear but the problem with the studies is that they give different results.
@SQuiRR3LM0nk3y Yes. It is an oxymoron, just like "intelligent christians" or similar. Funny coincidence, though..I was in a pretty bad car accident and have had to take a lot of tests before the authorities can be sure I'm fit to drive again, and yesterday my doctor read out loud from the IQ report: "The pasient scores higher than 99.5 percent of the population".. An artificial cell. Just think about it. How freakin' amazing is that? We understand nature so well that we can replicate it. I bet Francis Crick would've loved to be alive to be able to see this.
@ChiefMaverick515 I mean, scientists synthesising amino acids and RNA from scratch that's self replicating is major but creating a chromosome that allows bacteria to self replicate is freaking huge for biology, probably one of the greatest break through in years. When you are resurrected, and you will be, your argument will be e=mc2 so I don't believe that you created me God. I created myself, or my ancestors created me because they used to be single celled and we evolved. That just sounds stupid and unscientific.
@going2sleep Typical lazy mans answer ,"Where does lightning come from?" "Oh, Thor makes with his hammer".
You aren't the first and you won't be the last, saying "god gone done it" isn't an answer and wont help further anything, you can thwart the progression of your knowledge with your non-answer, but not everyone is as lazy as you.
Yes there might be a god, but there might also be invisible unicorns, you see until you can prove anything, there is no reason to believe it.
God doesn't exist. We were created by magic gnomes. This is fact because I have a book written almost 2 thousand years by unconfirmed authors, who I might add were told what to write by the magic gnomes. How did magic gnomes get created? The magic gnomes are separate from creation, once you do this, you can see that this proves that magic gnomes created the universe.
See how illogical your argument is? Substitute any preposterous entity into your statement and its implausible.
@HKJorddann We were created from single celled organism (pretty sure you know how complicated a cell is). How did that cell come about a bang billion years ago and billions years of trail and error until we could get a cell to make itself. Yes, cell made itself and environment made itself by trail and error. With the help of this self made environment cells figured a way to become organs and breath, walk, smell, taste, and have eyes. Even Darwin couldn't explain eyesight. GetREAL
@going2sleep I can't even understand a thing you said...
And for your information, just because Darwin couldn't explain the 'apparent complexity of the eye' to the Creationists of his day does not rule out the fact that scientists of the recent past have proven it's restrictive nature, which I might add would not be so if man was made "in the likeness of god"...
@HKJorddann Yes, today's biologists have explained the evolution of the eye conpletely adequately. Darwin and a few of the others who discovered the fact of evolution might have had some some small problems grasping the whole process when confronted with it, but now it's part of the curriculum in *evolution 101*, so to speak. : )
@RayWilliamJohansen DNA is very complex to explain what it is exactly... I am a biochemistry student, have been for 3 years now, and still can not give you an easy answer to that. Essentially it is two sugar-phosphate backbones with nucleic acid (NA) base pairs that connect the two. There are only 4 different NAs that make up the code of DNA, represented by A, T, C, G. A pairs with T and C pairs with G. The sequence they are in is different in every living organism. this sequence makes us.
@RayWilliamJohansen Anyone willing to even listen to science in my opinion is far from stupid. What you are is an easy question. But Who we are is complicated.I'm no neurological-scientist. But neurons are the source of our workings. Electrical pulses fired in different sequences, timing, location, etc. Consequently different chemical balances take place and cause our brain to think or react. I too find it amazing that all this came from "nothing". Scientists must be humble. We don't know all yet
@JacksonBrowneFan the thing that amazes me the most is how vast our universe is there is no "end of the road" sign and even if there was i ask myself whats behind it ? why cant we go there ? i sometimes find it hard to believe that ...well from what i know a little dot everything was created obviously not right away but still what exactly started it before that and before that sometimes i just dont know and rather not think about it
@RayWilliamJohansen It's perfectly understandable. In fact I'm the same way. Although I do not turn to the side of, "a god must have done it". Because it only raises the question of who created the god. Rather it's what drives my love of science, because there is so many beautiful things we have not understood or even discovered yet! :)
@No9Nando humans, animals, and the universe is much more complicated than a vehicle or a watch.. So all these complex features in the universe and humans is from mutation. Can you tell me any of the probability of these coming about just by mutation.
@going2sleep The universe is completely random. It's complex in that it hard to understand and there's a lot in it but it doesn't have any of the features of a design. It's mostly empty space. Humans progressed in very small stages. We had 4 billion years of natural selection. It's not surprising that we are complex.
@going2sleep Are you impling the "intelligent design" thing? which has been disproven, which could not hold the extensive critical eye in which all hypothesis are viewed in science? the flawed view that the watch is made by a watchmaker there the universe is made by a maker is non scientific, in regards of personal believe i happen to totally agree with this guy, in that the universe is far more wonderfull, than asuming it was made by a higher power
@longstrider9999 I believe in science and natural selection. But applying it to human creation and the universe for that matter is stupid. Do you know what are the chances of just being able to have sight just be mutation, or to smell, or walking on two feet, or even more complex intellect/think? If you want to see then grab a 10 marbles, all of them different color, and place them in a box, without looking, grab each marble in order. The probability is to get them in order is (26,000,000 : 1).
@going2sleep science and natural selection, evolution, or biology requiere no "belief" they are what they are because they have been proven time and again to be at work, implying that it is "random chance" or "chance" to have smell, seight, complex intellect/thinking on your comment only helps to prove that you do not understand what you are talking about, as in science that is not left for "chance" it is well explained in the whole of evolution, i sugest you read more on that subject
@going2sleep Conversely, grab each marble without looking and place them in a line. Any sequence you get will have the same 26,000,000:1 odds. You are assuming that our current state was pre-determined and there is absolutely no evidence of that.
Big bang cosmology and abiogenesis have nothing to do with evolution. Complexity does not denote design. You make it obvious that you don't understand natural selection.
"Life is 100% based on science nowadays" This guy is a legend, in fact he is more than that, he is god the almighty creator resurrected in the flesh to program life and save mankind!
Why is that so hard for people? People attach so much signicance to one of the most useless questions there are?
Maybe that question should be stamped on everyone's jacket so we can seperate the faith-based from the reason-based people and seperate the faith-based from the reason-based thinkers.
"You're playing God?"
"No, I'm being "Human," dominant species on the planet, the one that doesn't settle for what is, but desires what can be.
wow i was like "he's a douchebag" and then right at the end he became a legend. Thinking about all the guidos and douchebags out there who mae money off the ignorance of the public, it's nice to see a scientist get some, I suppose!
@Totaltwist Apart from discovering the true reasons we get sick, decoding the human genome, and designing the computer you are using? Not much.
The discovery of microwaves was predicted, directly, as a consequence of the Big Bang Theory. The fact that microwave ovens, the world over, are aiding people in the preparation of delicious and warm foods, and not killing them in the process, is strong evidence that the universe is much older than 10,000 years old.
@Totaltwist It could be said that *all* of the good that has ever been purposefully done in the world was done because somebody was operating under a scientific, or fact based, belief system.
Let's face it, this piece was probably written for a Christian audience, and I think it reveals the suicidal tenancies of such a worldview. Here is a man who is telling us that we may have the technology to save ourselves from extinction, and these people hate the human race so fucking much that they have the nerve to be disgusted.
Once again, truly devout Christians believe that the apocalypse is the greatest and best thing that could ever possibly happen. They are not to be trusted.
@Phelan666 It would help by removing Carbon Dioxide gas from the atmosphere, as the algae use it to fuel themselves. I don't know the chemistry but it sounds like it would not get rid of the carbon dioxide gas but, at least, relocate it so that it's not screwing up that atmosphere.
@Phelan666 It's not pollution they're preventing, it's CO2 emissions (and by extension global warming, according to the theory that CO2 is a cause of that particular problem).
@Phelan666 Solar and wind have their environmental drawbacks, too... you can't answer the energy problem with one type of source, it must be a distributed set of all energy sources to optimize the environmental and economical issues.
@Phelan666 Didn't your mom teach you not to use the word you're defining in the definition?
Sorry, but I've been longing for an opportunity to use that phrase.. Really, though, they remove CO2 from the atmosphere, so the total amount of CO2 that they emit is probably a LOT lower than what you get from most other ways of conserving energy.
And if we're going into semantics: As a naturally occurring substance, CO2 is a contaminant, if anything.
@mrbrownjeremy haha... Of course they do, he just discovered another reason why their phoney baloney god isn't actually necessary.
Wait! What was that?! Was the the sound of another *gap* closing up? Don't worry Christians, I'm sure he got out in time! Just drink your Kool-Aid and praise Jebus!
I lolled when I heard the question about beliving in God. There are very few people I respect and I respect Venter allready based just on this short clip. I dont think humanity deserves the work he is doing. Especially as the mediocre men cutted him off. I guess he didnt suck up to their fragile egos enough.
God is just an idea we have, a super ape. So playing god means just exeeding our previous work. Surely a sin to be a better man. One word: envy.
@Introspective91 yeah, that makes sence if you actually were religious... which you are not, you evil atheist. i mean, aproving of gay marriage really makes a dent in your relationship with jesus.
Its not like her is making any forms on complex life. If he made a multicellular life form, even if it was a tube worm, I would be afraid, but that is years off and not that useful to solve our current needs. I hope the algee works. I know a few companies that have been trying this with regular algee.
Btw: An interesting thing to consider is that the human genome consists of some 3 billion base pairs, which is isomorphic to some 750MiB of uncompressed data. So in other words: The program for making a human being fits on a CD. While the latest version of Microsoft Office does not.
God didn't create man. Man created god. And now man is creating life. I would take "You're playing god!" as an insult. Don't demote this man down to some fictional character, and go stick your religious convictions up someone elses arse. Amen.
These are great times for science: The LHC big bang experiments, the goldilocks planet, the isolation of antimatter, synthetic life, the discovery of extraGALACTIC planets. We are lucky to be living in this time.
I love it that the religious are up in arms about this. Tends to make me believe that he's onto something even bigger that "playing God", he's burying the very idea of God. We need science now, not more totems and superstitions; more science, better science, and the curiosity to go where we've never been. We have a chance to save millions of lives with this new technology, AND clean up the planet. God didn't create life or Mankind; Mankind created God. Religion is losing the battle and the war!
But just for laughs, what do the american or arab "creationists" say about this? That the scientists used "evil magic or sorcery", maybe? Hihi, God has been dead for me ever since I was 6 years old and able to spot b.s. fairytales. But these things that are happening in science now must surely open the eyes of millions and millions? There are no gods or toothfairies, and thanks to our brilliant scientists there sure isn't any need for them either! Good Riddance! ; ) dead and I'm SO happy! : )
@winterstellar I bet they will say the same thing as the reporter, that he's playing god, or that he wasted all that money on something that does nothing but live (at the moment) and even be more harsher on him because he's an atheist that accomplished all this.
@RayWilliamJohansen I fixed your comment. It should have stopped after "he never started".

THADI0US 1 year ago
@going2sleep
HKJorddann 1 year ago 11
@HKJorddann We were created from single celled organism (pretty sure you know how complicated a cell is). How did that cell come about a bang billion years ago and billions years of trail and error until we could get a cell to make itself. Yes, cell made itself and environment made itself by trail and error. With the help of this self made environment cells figured a way to become organs and breath, walk, smell, taste, and have eyes. Even Darwin couldn't explain eyesight. GetREAL
going2sleep 1 year ago
@going2sleep I can't even understand a thing you said...
And for your information, just because Darwin couldn't explain the 'apparent complexity of the eye' to the Creationists of his day does not rule out the fact that scientists of the recent past have proven it's restrictive nature, which I might add would not be so if man was made "in the likeness of god"...
HKJorddann 1 year ago
@HKJorddann Yes, today's biologists have explained the evolution of the eye conpletely adequately. Darwin and a few of the others who discovered the fact of evolution might have had some some small problems grasping the whole process when confronted with it, but now it's part of the curriculum in *evolution 101*, so to speak. : )

you seem like a nice and smart guy but i have a question
what exactly is dna
i heard its like a software
does this mean someone programmed me to do something specific ??
idk
RayWilliamJohansen 10 months ago
@RayWilliamJohansen DNA is very complex to explain what it is exactly... I am a biochemistry student, have been for 3 years now, and still can not give you an easy answer to that. Essentially it is two sugar-phosphate backbones with nucleic acid (NA) base pairs that connect the two. There are only 4 different NAs that make up the code of DNA, represented by A, T, C, G. A pairs with T and C pairs with G. The sequence they are in is different in every living organism. this sequence makes us.

im going to sound stupid but who am i ?
the earth has been around for a long time and until now i am born
if our dna defines who we are
then who made that
and who made that
im not saying there is no answer and debunks science
all i am saying is that i find it amazing that nothing (whatever that is) created pretty much everything
RayWilliamJohansen 10 months ago
@RayWilliamJohansen Anyone willing to even listen to science in my opinion is far from stupid. What you are is an easy question. But Who we are is complicated.I'm no neurological-scientist. But neurons are the source of our workings. Electrical pulses fired in different sequences, timing, location, etc. Consequently different chemical balances take place and cause our brain to think or react. I too find it amazing that all this came from "nothing". Scientists must be humble. We don't know all yet
JacksonBrowneFan 10 months ago
RayWilliamJohansen 10 months ago
@RayWilliamJohansen It's perfectly understandable. In fact I'm the same way. Although I do not turn to the side of, "a god must have done it". Because it only raises the question of who created the god. Rather it's what drives my love of science, because there is so many beautiful things we have not understood or even discovered yet! :)

@No9Nando humans, animals, and the universe is much more complicated than a vehicle or a watch.. So all these complex features in the universe and humans is from mutation. Can you tell me any of the probability of these coming about just by mutation.
going2sleep 1 year ago
@going2sleep The universe is completely random. It's complex in that it hard to understand and there's a lot in it but it doesn't have any of the features of a design. It's mostly empty space. Humans progressed in very small stages. We had 4 billion years of natural selection. It's not surprising that we are complex.

@going2sleep Are you impling the "intelligent design" thing? which has been disproven, which could not hold the extensive critical eye in which all hypothesis are viewed in science? the flawed view that the watch is made by a watchmaker there the universe is made by a maker is non scientific, in regards of personal believe i happen to totally agree with this guy, in that the universe is far more wonderfull, than asuming it was made by a higher power

longstrider9999 1 year ago
@longstrider9999 I believe in science and natural selection. But applying it to human creation and the universe for that matter is stupid. Do you know what are the chances of just being able to have sight just be mutation, or to smell, or walking on two feet, or even more complex intellect/think? If you want to see then grab a 10 marbles, all of them different color, and place them in a box, without looking, grab each marble in order. The probability is to get them in order is (26,000,000 : 1).
going2sleep 1 year ago
@going2sleep science and natural selection, evolution, or biology requiere no "belief" they are what they are because they have been proven time and again to be at work, implying that it is "random chance" or "chance" to have smell, seight, complex intellect/thinking on your comment only helps to prove that you do not understand what you are talking about, as in science that is not left for "chance" it is well explained in the whole of evolution, i sugest you read more on that subject
longstrider9999 1 year ago
@going2sleep Conversely, grab each marble without looking and place them in a line. Any sequence you get will have the same 26,000,000:1 odds. You are assuming that our current state was pre-determined and there is absolutely no evidence of that.
VolatileReaction 1 year ago
@VolatileReaction Never mind, I misread your comment lol.

Big bang cosmology and abiogenesis have nothing to do with evolution. Complexity does not denote design. You make it obvious that you don't understand natural selection.

Why is that so hard for people? People attach so much signicance to one of the most useless questions there are?
Maybe that question should be stamped on everyone's jacket so we can seperate the faith-based from the reason-based people and seperate the faith-based from the reason-based thinkers.

Once again, truly devout Christians believe that the apocalypse is the greatest and best thing that could ever possibly happen. They are not to be trusted.

5:30 that's great fight pollution with algae that produce pollution. What could go wrong?
Phelan666 1 year ago
@Phelan666 It would help by removing Carbon Dioxide gas from the atmosphere, as the algae use it to fuel themselves. I don't know the chemistry but it sounds like it would not get rid of the carbon dioxide gas but, at least, relocate it so that it's not screwing up that atmosphere.
Wallyrus 1 year ago
@Phelan666 It's not pollution they're preventing, it's CO2 emissions (and by extension global warming, according to the theory that CO2 is a cause of that particular problem).
floppaboppa 1 year ago
@floppaboppa Pollution is pollution, period. The only real solution is solar, wind, etc.
Phelan666 1 year ago
@Phelan666 Solar and wind have their environmental drawbacks, too... you can't answer the energy problem with one type of source, it must be a distributed set of all energy sources to optimize the environmental and economical issues.
ainefairygoddess 1 year ago
@Phelan666 Didn't your mom teach you not to use the word you're defining in the definition?
Sorry, but I've been longing for an opportunity to use that phrase.. Really, though, they remove CO2 from the atmosphere, so the total amount of CO2 that they emit is probably a LOT lower than what you get from most other ways of conserving energy.
And if we're going into semantics: As a naturally occurring substance, CO2 is a contaminant, if anything.

We need science now, not more totems and superstitions; more science, better science, and the curiosity to go where we've never been. We have a chance to save millions of lives with this new technology, AND clean up the planet. God didn't create life or Mankind; Mankind created God. Religion is losing the battle and the war!
