My border collie mix did that. Except that the sad grunting started the minute he heard my keys jingle, and when the front door shut he went straight to howling so dramatically that one of my neighbors asked me if he was okay. He did this at the groomers, too: the minute I left his sight, he started screaming like he was being electrocuted. I eventually gave him to a nice farming family who could give him more room and more attention.
