Well whether it was plageiarized or not, i'm most certainly glad to have been able to hear the beauty of the voice along with the collaborations of the music, it most definately speaks to an inner part of my soul. And whoevers material it is i'm glad its out there to where i was able to experience it!
It's very important to know that Deep Forest had plagiarized this lullaby which had been recorded by an ethnomusicologist (Hugo Zemp). The singer is called Afunakwa, from the Salomon Island.She never had been ok for that, even Hugo Zemp who attacked them in justice but nothing has been made.They want to "preserved" cultures, but their actions are the opposite of that. Afunakwa never had been payed, and it's NOT FROM AFRICA! so, please, we have to say and to know the truth. Sorry for my english!
@mimie0301 The lullaby sung by Afunakwa was used as a vocal sample in Sweet Lullaby. The music is Deep Forest's. One has to commend Deep Forest to bring to the world the beauty of and make known the music of these cultures. It's a great combination of western music and the lullaby music from Solomon Islands.
@lemaindeuday The sung of Afunakwa, even if it's "only" a vocal sample, is in fact the most important part in this song nop? Yes of course they can use this lullaby, but in rules, and they don't have to do that against the will of the real author. And by the way, because they put "western music" with this lullaby, they deform the song, so it's not really "the music of these cultures", because in these cultures, there's a signification, they're not sung this way...
@mimie0301 You may be right in one way, but in another way, because this song was ultimately a big hit, more people now know about the existence of such local music. At least, I wouldn't have otherwise known, and only those who studied ethnomusicology would have known.
@mimie0301 Technically they didn't plagiarize the clip. When the singer (Afunakwa) gave ethnomusicologist Hugo Zemp the right to record her singing in 1970, that was her consent for the clip to be used however Zemp deemed fit. He then years later allowed the UNESCO to include it in a collection of cultural music sources. Deep Forest got the clip via that collection, which, from what I understand, was essentially a public access collection. So, Zemp was the first to mess up by lending it out.
@Louski I'm sorry but I study ethnomusicology, and I know Hugo Zemp. The real "story" is that UNESCO asked him a lot of time to use this lullaby but Zemp wasn't agree. Except one time, for a conference, but after, Zemp was against all the ways of using this music. They didn't respect this whish , even if it can be a way of sharing music from different cultures, it's not a good way...(it would be easier for me if I could speak french^^)
@MrDanielTynan Yes but I'm not sure it was really her whish and her target, and in fact, nobody (or few people) know she's called Afunakwa, and we don't know what she looks like, how old she's, and every body don't care about that...
@xXBronzedBalletXx no it's not South African rather it's from the Solomon Island, I think you saying that it could be South African because of the other music video to this song which has Ndebele people of South Africa. It doesn't make sense because the language that the song is sung in id not Ndebele but I think the song applies to every tribe or race around the world.
Thank you SO much for posting this. I heard the original version of this on Gaia Radio this morning (first time in 15 years,) and just had to find out the title and artist. After 4 hours of Googling, etc, I came upon this by chance. I LOVE this song still. It sends a chill down my spine still, all these years later.
Im thinking about starting a stage performance with this deep forest music as the theme,(this song and songs like this song) Plot: a boy falling right down deep into the cracks and crevices of the earth deep into a big sinkhole or something, and then meeting strange weird eccentric creatures, unknown to man because he has fallen sooo deep into the jungle where all these untouched strange troglobite creatures are living in the DEEP FOREST with there adapted bioluminescent patterned bodies.
I really want to listen to this song Deep into the madagascan or Amazon rainforest...lying there on a giant leaf with rain trickling on my face,smelling the strange aroma's that fill the jungle air, whilst strange exotic creatures slowly cum out to greet me with a curious but harmless approach; checking who this new eccentric creature is, who warms their territory. ( picture this scene with a setting almost like Avatars Pandora forest whilst at night with its bioluminescent lights)
I gotta thank my brother for allowing me to appreciate this type of music. Before I only listened to mainstream and would laugh at something like this, now it seems to be the other way around
I can't remember exactly how many times I have listened to this music. If I remember correctly, it was the year 1992 when I was a grad student at IIT-Bombay and one of my friends who happens to be a music lover was playing this music in his room and to say in a word I was simply "spellbound". It opened my eyes in the world of "music". Although its a sad music but I can't stop listening to this music and I feel like I want to live in this beautiful world forever.
When i listen to this song i imagine night sky, big fireplace and people dancing in a circle holding each other hands in somekinda magical island, no hate, no jealousy, only love and caring. Material things come and go , true friendship lasts forever, respect nature and each other. Peace to you all :))
I am reminded of driving my huge four wheel drive while burning fossil fuel with a 450 hp V8 up and down highway 17 listening to this tape, yes tape, full blast...just driving and listening. I loved the music, but missed the message. Ah, to be a teenager for me was blissfully unaware, oxymoronic bliss. I killed some trees with that truck which I would now drive off a cliff...in an environmentally friendly way.
I almost canceled this song on Pandora but then when I heard the whole thing I fell in love with it immediately :) and yeah @0pposableThumbs this is my favorite version too :))
Our world could be a better place once everyone wakes up. Ancient cultures didn't worship/favour animals for no reason we are all together under our skin we live in a world for my society anyway in Australia big companies and a 'false reality'
I can't express my love for this song, or anything similar for that matter. I'm an 18 year old boy from the East Coast, Noone around here can relate to this kind of music like I can.

@mExloKo13 Baegu also known as Baeggu. It is the language spoken by the natives of Northern Malaita, an island that is part of the Solomon Islands. The Solomon Islands are part of the region of Melanesia and located in the south Pacific, somewhat near Australia and South East Asia.
@lazo120 Melenesian pride does that include ALL the HOME INVASIONS these backward people do in Australia, name a Soloman Islander scientist, brilliant doctor, engineer, designer, inventor. They ARE VIOLENT DANGEROUS people who breed and contribute NOTHING to the world.. Just name ONE Solomon Islander scientist? Even the Maoris call Solomon Islanders "coconuts"! Everday in Sydney you read about violent crimes committed by people of Pacific Islander appearance!
violence is sign of change - and pacific islanders has changed since WWII (when they still had Stone Age) immensely.....but a leap from a year -10 000 BC to 2000 AD was, is and will be for many years, perhaps generations their biggest challenge ;-) this's not an excuse...they should stay at home & try to develop it there ;-)
@budyssiner Very good comment by you, unfortunately the Pacific Islands r very over populated & Australia is being used as a "relief valve" until they get their population growth under control (won't happen). Former Foreign Minister Hayden said we have to accept 1 million lslanders. U don't become a clever country by importing dumb cultures who don't value education. Sick of seeing stories in newspapers about violent crimes by Islanders, cheers
@rag5206 this is truth and it won't bring something good....they should stay home and resolve their issues alone instead :-/ any transplantation of this peoples into AU won't help - simply - it can't as it doesn't resolve the reason of their overpopulation :-(
@10Jagah I think you mean realist, lets debate the issue these people would NEVER pass a migration entry criteria for Japan, Singapore, England. They sneak into Australia via New Zealand. Why should immigrants from Europe, America have to prove they can contribute to Australia? Yet these violent backward people are accepted here. Read the Daily papers how many assualts are by people discribed as Pacific Islander appearance? Grow up and open your eyes!!!
Can somebody tell me what language is this and what are the people singing. I'm going to do a very import exam in the end of the year, which has this music as an theme , and I would be very thankful if someone could say that.
@ViniciusGuitarGuy: see below - it is a language / local dialect spoken on the Solomon Islands. The lyrics refer to a young orphan being comforted by his older brother moarning the loss of their parents
This song is not sung and was not taken from African, this song is sung in Malaitan language, thats a province in the Solomon Islands...........why r people claiming thuis song to be from Africa....
I was surprised to c some comments stating that this song is originally from Africa............lol
One day the problems will END. We can live in peace sorrounded my nature and soothed souls. No more war, no more anything just peace between everyone, no racism and the world will be a better place! LONG LIVE US WITH THE HELP OF GOD!

@lazo120 Thanks for the info
ToxaJart 1 year ago
@lazo120 Melenesian pride does that include ALL the HOME INVASIONS these backward people do in Australia, name a Soloman Islander scientist, brilliant doctor, engineer, designer, inventor. They ARE VIOLENT DANGEROUS people who breed and contribute NOTHING to the world.. Just name ONE Solomon Islander scientist? Even the Maoris call Solomon Islanders "coconuts"! Everday in Sydney you read about violent crimes committed by people of Pacific Islander appearance!
rag5206 1 year ago
@rag5206
violence is sign of change - and pacific islanders has changed since WWII (when they still had Stone Age) immensely.....but a leap from a year -10 000 BC to 2000 AD was, is and will be for many years, perhaps generations their biggest challenge ;-) this's not an excuse...they should stay at home & try to develop it there ;-)
budyssiner 1 year ago
@budyssiner Very good comment by you, unfortunately the Pacific Islands r very over populated & Australia is being used as a "relief valve" until they get their population growth under control (won't happen). Former Foreign Minister Hayden said we have to accept 1 million lslanders. U don't become a clever country by importing dumb cultures who don't value education. Sick of seeing stories in newspapers about violent crimes by Islanders, cheers
rag5206 1 year ago
@rag5206 this is truth and it won't bring something good....they should stay home and resolve their issues alone instead :-/ any transplantation of this peoples into AU won't help - simply - it can't as it doesn't resolve the reason of their overpopulation :-(

@rag5206 racist
10Jagah 10 months ago

ViniciusGuitarGuy 1 year ago
@ViniciusGuitarGuy: see below - it is a language / local dialect spoken on the Solomon Islands. The lyrics refer to a young orphan being comforted by his older brother moarning the loss of their parents

@tsimentor Probably the people that find the whole concept of stealing a lullaby from the Soloman Islands and selling it as an African ridiculous! :)
