Salvete! Esswood is, perhaps, the greatest countertenor ever. And Saul demonstrates that more than anything, I think. But I believe everyone should listen to THE WHOLE of Saul to get a complete understanding of Esswood's ( and Händel's) art. The director here is Philip Ledger, for those who are interested.
I totally agree with your opinion! I met Paul Esswod and asked him about Monteverdi"s Ottone. Well, it"s his favourite role. His voice is absolutely unique.
I don't know who's the most graceful in this case, George F. Händel or his interprtator Paul Esswood. Can only hope this 'll played the day of my funerals. I derive much omfort from this !
I have " Saul" with Mackerras, and James Bowman as countertenor ( as David ). You should know that version of Saul. The James Bowman'voice is very impressive.
When I first acquired this recording, I listened to it about 10 times in a row because of the beauty of Esswood's voice and also because I like his interpretation, a tribute to Baroque practice.
I've heard almost all counter-tenors there is. Esswood is still one of my favorites.

Paul Esswood just owns this aria, there hasn't been any better interpretations to this day...
He was soooooo good, he should have been around a bit later... fabulous voice.
Harnoncourt, always at the forefront, made good use of him in the early 70's. His Ottone is the best I have heard so far as well... Bravo Mr Esswood

A mi me gusta más Andreas Scholl, pero esas pinturas de Friedrich son increíbles.

I think that this is delightful. Many years ago my wife sang with Paul in the duet from Handel's Soloman.
