The coaches should have thought really good about this race. Guerrouj had already run about 4 races, 2 days race. Bekele had about a week race. So, then, make the race a fast one and tired Guerrouj out. Bekele should have made the race a fast one, knowing that he has the world record!!! Bekele knew that Guerrouj is so strong on the last ap just like him but slight more. So, yeah but hey finishing second place is not bad either. Two of the best distance runners of all time including Gebrselassie!

When the great bekele, ran a insane 53.02 last lap (even faster than wilson kipketer 53.15 last lap when he equalled seb coes 800 wr) in a very very fast 10000m olympic final. Seven days latter you wouldn't think, anybody could out kick you in a 5000m race.
Bekele admitted a tactical error. Mind you he has the record for the distance. You don't setup for a final 300 meter sprint with a miler in after a very very slow 4k. That was a blunder to say the least and Kennenisa's couches admitted. He should have gone off at 2k to a steadily escalating speed all the way to the end. Surely it would have been different.
Its a shame we never saw Hicham El Guerrouj vs Haile Gebrselassie compete against each other over this distance, that would have been fascitating, and too close to call. Although don't get me wrong, Kenenisa Bekele vs Hicham El Guerrouj was awesome and fascitating to watch.
that was SICK running from the tall ethiopian Gebremariam or somethin, trying to box el guerrouj throughout the race and even getting involved in some elbowing. this is not how you win a race, using lame tactics, its about who is the fastest. What matters in this is the racing Said and El-G are two of the greatest racers of all time. Criticizing them or praising them for off the track is your right, but here I think the forum is the running of the legs. El-G lost some races, but had possibly the greatest distance doulbe in the history of running at the Athens Games. Said should have gone double 1500/5000 instead of 1500/800 and he would have been double gold in Los Angeles as well.
don't involve hicham in your political talks. Hicham was a brilliant runner with incredible spirit. And discrediting his success is a disgrace to the great sport of track and field.
El guerrouj is the best...when u talk about 83 wins in 86 races over the 1500m, 31 times under 3.30, 4 times word champion (1 time silver 1995), and double olympic champion 1500,5k....he is the best runner ever that the world never had

Probably, but many younger athletes make bad judgements that cost them big races, its part of racing. El Guerrouj has made similar mistakes in the past when he should have won.
You are right El Gherrouj is a great runner, but definitely not as good as ETHIOPIAN runner, winning 5,000, 10,000, Marathon, and Olympics, it like culture for us.
